    we watch enthusiasts live in a halo world a non-existent world in which snobs and hobbyists think Tudor is poor man Rolex, Glashutte Original is poor man Lange and zenith defy is poor man's AP and the truth is no poor man buys a 5-10k watch period. Poor man at best buys Casio 91W or a Seiko 5 so why we always make those statements its actually very baffling!?

    • @MrYutbe57

      No one has commented on this absolute gem of a comment so I will sir. This is the most true thing about the watch community period. It's the most unspoken toxic thing in the world to put down people who PREFER a Black Bay 58 to a Sub or a Defy to an AP or an Alpine Eagle or even a Riviera to a Nautilus. Laureto over an overseas? Sure I can see it. To call any of those watches a poor man's option is mind-blowing since all of these are literally THOUSANDS of dollars the the average person will NEVER have to ability to splurge on when a timex or a good seiko or Casio is good enough for them. And hell there isn't anything wrong with an SKX or Weekender or base Gshock. Horological gems. We like watches. Period. Price be damned.

    Love the Defy Skyline - really is a great watch in its price range. Many don’t realize that Zenith has its own history and heritage and contributed quite a lot to the watch market, which leads to lazy analysis of “RO homage” - oh well, can’t always fix ignorance. Have you seen the new skeleton defy? It’s quite nice as well!

    • @BruceWilliams

  • @_Florin
    @_Florin ปีที่แล้ว +25

    The previous Defy is much better looking. Granted this has a better movement but subjectively we cannot tell the difference. The skeleton dial is amazing and it's round and not royal oak type. Now in regards to construction, I just wanna say that Bruce is right, the attention to detail and the quality of the materials is top notch! You see a lot of titanium watches, but this one is at the top.

    • @gavinBsussex

    • @_Florin
      @_Florin ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gavinBsussex I have the Shunbun which I guess has the same construction material as Snowflake. The titanium in Zenith looks better due to native colour and while the Shunbun looks great it has a slight tint of discoloration at the first link from the case. Maybe it's due to the fact that GS wanted the bracelet to be shiny? I like them both. One is sporty one is elegant.

    • @BillyChuckThe21st
      @BillyChuckThe21st ปีที่แล้ว

    Yup, I have the blue face version. It's like most from Zenith, well above value for $ than most luxury brands. It's a watch Rolex could only hope to build, for less $ and a long history. Fact is, RO ripped off Zenith as the line and the look came out several years before the RO. Only negative for me is, it should have a 60s second hand. A normal 60 second hand plus the 10s hand would look visually better.

    The seconds hand is a great party trick.... very cool

  • @spoonraker
    @spoonraker ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I really want to like this watch because it's visually stunning, but I just can't get over the fact that it literally doesn't tell you the time to the second despite the fact that it has a second hand. In this case the second hand is pure decoration and has nothing to do with time telling.
    I don't mind unorthodox design at all, in fact I'm drawn to it, however reducing the most core functionality of a watch -- time keeping -- and replacing it with something functionally useless just for the sake of novelty is just one step too far.
    The 10 second period can totally make sense for a chronograph, provided there's a 60 second subdial. But completely removing the ability to know what second is just doesn't sit right.

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is really curious to me. Do you often need to know the proper second in your daily routine? I dont in mine. Tradionally a seconds complication was just to show that the movement was running, and many calibers did not hack (some still dont) Technically a seconds complication is not essential to the timekeeping of a movement. If I am timing something, absolutely I want a chronograph. But just for a daily wear I don't see the need. But maybe you need it. Thanks!

    • @willbrink
      @willbrink ปีที่แล้ว

      I think what would have made that watch perfect would have been a second hand + the 10th second hand. I still got one, but I do think that would have made it even better.

    • @stefanpersson240
      @stefanpersson240 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a daily routine I check the time two times a day to the second to keep track of the accuracy (and the movement). This seconds hand make it harder to even know the time to the minute and is also stressful to look at.

    I have never seen one in real life, yet I appreciate the Defy line. Zenith has been doing great work, except for improving their product headshots. Their brand imagery just does not do their product justice as well made live shots and videos show. Ni exception with this Skyline. However, for me personally, I would have preferred the cleaner dial from the Classic model in this case and bracelet. I am not convinced by the date windows in this line, nor the 3 o'clock subdial, though the two elements together do balance out a bit. On the Classic I don't like the star counterweight so much. It's a step too far for me, I guess. Ultimately thought, I want to shout out to the Women's models, by they Skyline or diamond studded, they truly look highly desirable and tasteful. Furthermore, the Revival models also seem to get worthy praise. It's a fact Zenith started with this kind of design before the RO.

    Yay.. another royal oaky watch. but with an “original” twist (12 sides instead of 8) That’s 50% more sides for you your dollar! Watch world… move on. I hate to be a smart-ass… but goodness, let’s get some more watch designs not based on APRO or Submariner, or Explorer ( I, II) … etc, etc, etc. (he says while wearing a Tudor BBGMT 😂)
    Nice video as usual Bruce.

      Jason look into the history of the defy, its really fascinating. It predates the RO. There are two defy references that this skyline takes nearly all it's visual cues from. Both prefate the RO. Saying it's a royal oaky watch isn't giving zenith its due credit. Zenith: Swiss Watch Manufacture Since 1865 by
      Manfred Rössler is a great read, well worth the time 👍👍

      @@BruceWilliams I'll check it out... but.... you have to admit it IS Royal-Oaky (or the Royal Oak is kind of Zenith-y). It' is mildly suspicious that Zenith dredged it up out of their back catalog at the same time so many others are dredging up their RO-like back catalog items. How about that Zenith Chronomaster Sport Daytona? I think almost all these watch designers are a pretty incestuous group. Like I said... I was complaining about AP and Zenith while I was wearing a Tudor Black Bay "Pepsi" GMT. I live in a glass house too. Thanks for the tip.

    I don't know, dude. The last generation, open-work dial was genuinely exciting, and I'd have taken one of those over a Rolex. This one is much more subdued and doesn't appeal to me much; I'd rather have the Rolex or a million other things.
