- If you’re just getting into watches, it won’t be long before you come across the El Primero. Meaning, ‘the first’, it was the name given by its creator, Zenith, to mark the creation of the world’s first integrated automatic chronograph movement. That was 50 years ago-there’s been a lot of progress since.

When that second balance started moving it took me a second to believe it tbh. That's some insane engineering
But what's the application of such fast movement
Nikhil D Rao if you are really into the mechanical watches world, you should know it is not about logic, it is about emotion:) . If it’s only about “application”, no one needs a mechanical watch nowadays.
I get the amazing feat they have done... But it's a legit question I'm asking... What's use???? Like a tourbillon is obsolete but still had a purpose to fulfill.... What's this one's?
Nikhil D Rao well, in theory, that would help the watch run extremely precise. We may or may not need it. Moreover, it is also about a statement from Zenith or owners of this watch: “we can do it.”
@@nikhildrao227 By moving that fast you can measure much smaller fractions of second, down to the mili second!
I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw this. Thank you for these videos. Without you my eyes probably would have never been opened about how much more there is to watches than just the usual Rolex. I think we, as your viewers, can all agree on one thing - your videos are amazing and we hope you will continue them for years to come, we can't get enough of them. Thank you.
A few years ago I thought Rolex was top tier...boy was I wrong once I started paying attention. The world of watches is beautiful.
@@WorldsWorstFishing In terms of market share it has no competition exactly because of its appeal to non-watch enthusiasts which make up most of the market.
its also one of the worst things about owning a Rolex, that and seeing every other guy in the supermarket wearing one
@@robertellulmicallef
This is one of the annoyances I have with some of the Rolex heavy collections you see online. Particularly Hodinkee. After you've bought 3 or more Rolexes it's all a bit boring. You need a Submariner, a Datejust & a Daytona. After that, there are so many other brands to explore. Like why not buy a JLC or a Zenith? IWC? Grand Seiko? Glashutte? Girard Perragaux? Blancpain? Even some of the more controversial creations of Ulysee Nardin? And then there's always the top 3 & Lange. Variety is important and just slavishly buying Rolex after Rolex seems boring to me. It's like that person doesn't really get watches but they know Rolexes are good so hey let's buy lots of them. I have the same issue with jewelled bezels & all that bling crap.
@@sdemosi why not swatch sistem51?its fun..haha
Good to see something else praised on here other than Lange and other Richemont brands. This piece is very cool.
@@MPD90 correct.
But Zenith is a Richemont brand..
@@waynezheng7629 never seen it listed under their brands, they must not be too proud.
Zenith belongs to LVMH (like TH and Hublot), as is mentioned sometime in the video.
True story: Richemont owns Watchfinder.co.uk
Greatest video out from you guys yet.
Love Zenith and love this video. Great job guys. Was wondering when you'd do a Zenith only episode - I felt like there were hints you were going to do it when you talked about the silicon movement and why it was good, but if I recall you ignored even mentioning Zenith and instead just showed the movement! I was blown away by the El Primero 21 movement and your guys high quality zoomed in footage of this amazing watch great. You really did this skeleton watch justice by showing all the detailed inner workings of it!
In January, wife bought me this watch in Zürich for our anniversary. I still stare in amazement every time I put it on and fire up the chronometer. He’s correct in saying all hell breaks loose.
I am more amazed with you wife! Great gift!
Still like it?
I am speach less. Zenith is the most underrated brand.
When i bought mine, i had the feeling that i have stolen it, so cheap was it, lol. But that time is gone.
speeeeeeeeech
...by far!
@@udowillkomm1173 how much?
2300 Euro, lol. New, of course.....
I so enjoy playing your videos on full screen. Spellbound by all those magnificent close up shots. Pure video magic.
The Zenith looks well cool too!
I've never ever considered buying a Zenith, but I will now. It looks even better than any Rolex you can get (and it's definitely more unique).
Lawrence Downs you state that as facts which is stupid
Unique and spectacular in one piece.
I'm looking at eBay now for one.
I got a Zenith over a Rolex Submariner due to the differences of engineering & styling
Watch out for the rolex fan boys coming for you with the "investment value" argument
Although I enjoy the El Primero movement in my Type 20 Zenith Pilot watch, this is just awesome and really shows again what a truly great manufacture Zenith is, I have now added this watch to my shopping list! Thanks for the steer!
I've never came across this piece until this video but now that I have I must say it's a very interesting piece
Another great, interesting and informative video. You guys have seriously changed the game in terms of horological videos on TH-cam. I'm always excited to see what you'll cover next!
Okay, now that's cool!
The new skeleton Zenith El Primero is very beautiful and probably the best chronograph in the market. I like the fact that the Zenith el Primero has two movements, one for the hour, minute and date and the other for the chronograph. I like the El Primero beautiful skeleton dial, I like the display case back that show the star rotor and the colorful silicon gears. the El Primero bracelet is also beautiful. The Zenith El Primero is a nice piece of craftsmanship and mechanical technology.
Superbly narrated. Wonderful camera angles & close-ups.
Zenith is one of my favorite watchmakers, and the Striking 10th is my favorite watch ever. So beautiful!
I absolutely love this watch.
Exclusive in house movement with silicon escapement, incredible engineering for a very cool complication, top quality finishing of the case and bracelet (done in titanium) all for an incredible price of a hair over $10,000 brand new!
The amount of watch you get relative to the price is unmatched anywhere else.
I bought the Defy 21. Love it. This week I bought the 96.0525.4000 m21 and super excited about both. I feel more soul in the Zenith, than my Rolex which has been pushed to the back.
That rotor is badass! And the Chrono is just....... My God is it beautiful
What an amazing piece of kit. Bravo Jaun Claude
It's amazing how your incredible macro photography brings out the shocking amount of debris/dirt inside these watches. I've never seen it with the naked eye but surely that's not good for the workings.
The Zenith is a classic. Underrated for sure, but lacking in aesthetics to command the big bucks.
I'm a fan of the El Primero... but anyone else notice the nicks and specks of dust on the hands and dials of this specific one?
I don't want to spoil the party somewhat, but the Defy El-P 21 caliber 9004 has 293 parts, not 203. Nonetheless, this watch is my grail chrono, but I've been hesitant for months to pull the trigger because it, like a super car, is really only serviceable by Zenith and for a pretty penny.
katalysis yes, this is true!
What is the current list price ?
@@theonlyredspecial 9000$ I think
@@theonlyredspecial On the website its listed at €12,000
Buy it. It is the chrono
Love all your videos..! the passion with which you describe a watch makes me fall in love with it..!
I love your videos. I get a sense of something magical when seeing the videos you make.
Still cannot believe that movement. At the absolute cutting edge. Thank you Zenith and thank you Watchfinder.
50Hz in a mechanical form is surely the limit. I’d imagine the service frequency is just as staggering as will be the cost. The hyper macro shots show imperfections in the finishing but this is a volume manufacture piece hence the high price isn’t astronomical. But it’s very cool and such a handsome piece. Well done Zenith, top of class.
That is one bad ass watch! Zenith needs more recognition, regular folks have no clue what this brand is.
Regular folks would ask you if this is a Rolex as they only know like 3 brands. Even watch people seldom talk about Zenith. All this means no resale value but great buying second hand.
@@almac9203 💯
I always enjoy the quality of your videos - your style of narrating is really unique and it shows your enthusiasm. It is contagious! Oh, nice watch!!! ;)
Fabulous contextualization and presentation of Zenith, the watch and its provenance.
I’d like to hold it up to my ear and listen to that insane mechanism
my mind was blown so hard with this one
Impressive bit with the dual movements! 👍🏼
Credit where it is due: @Watchfinder&Co. , thank you for another exceptional... i don't want make it sound cheap by saying it's a video and I'm sure there's a perfect word or more - that I can't come up with right now - that sums up this extravagant demonstration.
Incredible timepiece and your best video so far... good job!!!
At around 1:25, that's some fantastic shining job on the minute and hour hands. So good in fact, that you can clearly see how filthy the underside of the second hand is. =)
Great .. now I can't unsee that!
@@cmg11235 It's still bothering me two years later...
Appreciate the flexibility that the watch giant gives to this channel. Not only to its own brands but also appreciate the work done by competitors. This is the spirit of True Horology. Well done guys.
I am always impressed with your video review results...What camera do you used?
Wonderfully narrated and breathtakingly well filmed. IMHO one of your best videos.
Long life to Zenith (so underrated)!
This watch is on my wrist and it's fascinating. It's a pleasure to wear. The movement seems robust in spite of its complexity. I would recommend the bracelet over the rubber strap. More comfortable. Thanks Watchfinder for your review. Your work is always great.
Still working fine?
I never stop learning something new watching your videos, thanks guys.
2:29 Little ding on the hand?
SR and 6:17
These watches are second hand, the whole point of these videos is to sell the watches they have in stock.
But the range is less than a year old. In my opinion even if it is second hand that mark shouldn't be there as its under the glass and in the sealed case.
@@MattoDesigno i don't know how the first owner would be able to ding those "hands" though..certainly quite hard to ding something inside the case by accident
@@jonibangs1797 hmm I do wonder how that happened, maybe they got a dodgy first year's servicing
Very nice. Happy birthday El Primero ! 🎂
I never thought I’d look at a Zenith, but this watch is rapidly climbing up my list!
Outstanding chronograph. Many thanks for this nice video.
Just checked Watchfinder and the only Seikos in stock are Grand Seikos at 3k+. Not surprising perhaps that the real first automatic chronograph on people’s wrists, the 6139, doesn’t even get a mention. Not Swiss. How ghastly!
It amazes me how much cool stuff there really is out there. Killer watches and as always killer video!
Thank you for another great video and another chance to learn about the watches I love so much.
Finally I've found something to suggest as an improvement for one of your videos. Here is what I would change, do the exact same video, but starting with a normal el primero, then add the striking 10th and explain the difference to the original, and then finally add the 1/100th(defy) and explain the difference to the other 2.
My appreciation for watches grows each days I learn more about them :)
After this video, I might want to be a Zenith collector.... Very beautiful video. Thank you
Wow, that's a great video. I really enjoyed it and for sure would buy the zenith el primero 21 over a Daytona now that I know this. Thank you so much for the videos and keep it up, I really appreciate your work.
Stunning watch, incredible performance! Brilliant video as usual!
That cheeky side eye at defy media worst prefect
Maybe you could rewiev a diffrent zenith. The zenith defy classic, with the blue dial on a bracelet. 🤔
Love that watch 👌
They won't review watches they don't have in stock. After all they are a business trying to sell watches. Why review something if you can't sell it afterwords. Would be like a sales assistant telling you the positives of buying a certain pair of shoes, to turn round at the end and say we don't actually sell them
@@sabretooth5404 Didn't they review a Grand Seiko, which they do not carry in their inventory?
@@ChavanAr funny that cos I found them in their inventory
www.watchfinder.co.uk/Grand Seiko/watches
Woaw this is the coolest chronograph on earth ! I felt in love with it 😍
The video nicely covers up how incredibly loud the chrono function is. But still amazed by the movement.
Amazing. Thanks Watchfinder.
1:25 shows what you get with a more expensive brands. Finishing the second hand on both sides. This seems to have been corrected in the Defy 21. This watch is astounding value as far as haute horology goes.
Brilliantly described. Pity Zenith still is such an underrated brand.
I wonder if they’d be better off (and richer) if they just switch to selling movements and spawn a thousand brands.
What a great story, good luck to Zenith, it is one hell of a piece of micro engineering.
I amin love with the center sweep red hand that is in a hurry. Unlike any other .
I couldnt believe when the first time I saw it, but i was completely in shocked knowing tag heuer already done it more than 10 years ago with mikrotimer. Even more they surpass it with mikrograph and mikrogirder. Insane...
At first I thought ,ok, just another Zenith video‘ but then...WTF!!!
That deserves genuine respect
I watched this video when it came out, and a year has not gone by that I haven’t come back and watched it again. If I could choose any watch in the world, this would not be my choice. However, there is some part of my that still has the ability to produce childlike dreams and that part of me is convinced that some day this is a watch I might actually be able to afford. A turbograph perpetual from Lange is out of the question barring a lottery jackpot
please review the zenith defy inventor/lab, or the Frederique constant monolithic. I think the new kind of silicone oscillator found in these watches is incredibly interesting.
I love the concept, how it pushes boundaries of what is physically possible with a mechanical watch.
My main problem is the skeletonised look. Also, if 36k vph was already running tight and in need of shorter service intervals, I can't imagine how often a 360k vph movement will need a service. That's my concern.
Astonishing engineering nonetheless.
True, but the 36k vph is only activated when you run the stop watch so it doesn't endure stress all the time.
Servicing comes with the territory, I suppose. Nobody buys a v12 Ferrari expecting the services are cheap! 😂
I have this in all ceramic black. The chrono amazes me every time i wear it. I will never use it for anything, other than my own amazement and fascination, and that counts for everything i think. (And yes I use a watch to tell time, not my phone)
Absolutely fascinating time piece
Great video thanks! 👍
Now, I want el primero in my colection, thanks !!! 👍👍🏿👍🏻👍🏽, hello from Peru 🇵🇪
Hello, have you considered doing a video on currently available type 20 chronographs such as the Breguet, Dodane and Auricoste? There is very little on them and nothing on Auricoste in English.
The movement is absolutely beautiful! Zenith have a lot of amazing watches especially with it comes to their watches movements. 👌😊
I agree it’s a quality price of kit! Great vids !
Excellent video. The speed of that hand 😱
Love the review happy 50th le primero
Beautiful piece. But at that price point wth is up with all the dust particles inside the watch?
Damn! Thats cool. Was saving up for a rattrapante, but this takes the cake. Time to reconsider my grail chrono.
Quality video as always 👌
What do you know about Nivada watches? I have one that belonged to my dad and it's 55 yrs old and still works perfectly well.
i wish it had a a plain dial, maybe a sunburst silver or blue. I prefer to look at my movements from underneath the case back
Would love a video and your thoughts on the zenith chronomaster sport.
Rolex gave this video the one thumbs down!
Mike D Agreed.
@@MPD90 Could not have said it any better. They know this as well which is why you'll never see an exhibition case-back on a Rolex. They're more the apple of the watch world, not necessarily the best option, but man do they have the marketing down pat.
The must have seen it more than once...count 11 thumbs down right now
This is the day maker in this dark overpriced Rolex nonsense
Legendary watch from a legendary brand....on a legendary channel.
Superb Video.
Amazing piece !!
The tech behind the 1/100th second El Primero is amazing but I hate what Biver has done to Zenith
I really love the case and bracelet design. Really overlooked.
As soon as I saw the hairspring in that balance I knew something was going to move as fast as a jackrabbit.
That's the Ace that Zenith needs right now, JC Bever is a living icon and he is the superhero that comes to the rescue.
WHAT AN EXCITING VIDEO!!!
AWESOMELY DONE!!!
That title is not clickbait, absolutely beastly
These things are incredible, although i have heard that their movements are very expensive to service.
I am planning to buy this watch.... is it better then daytona?
Is it still an integrated chronograph if it uses a separate balance wheel?
Great Video, great watch. I love Zenith!!!!
Is it me or is the date removed...
My jaw dropped when all hell started breaking loose with that second chronograph movement
Gotta agree with the below. For me this is your best video to date.
