      Yes, i agree with you. Back in the island growing up we eat raw oysters but they come straight from the sea and we eat on the same day. Don't eat any raw seafood that sell in most shop today. They're not fresh.

      I've tried it so many times in so many ways in so many countries. Mostly very high end. I still encounter people who say "you just need to go to the right place". No, it's absolutely disgusting.

      My local oriental store got some deshelled oysters in bottle. They are supposed to be safe since they have been processed in a limited way, but I don't think I'm gonna push it. Bought it once when I had a strong crazy craving &; never did again.

    I got food poisoning from cooked oysters when I was in the military many years ago. I was sick for days. If I had eaten them raw, I probably would have died. So sad. RIP.

    So sad. In Asia, we are taught to not eat raw oysters during the summer months due to increased risk from bacteria so most restaurants only serve it during non-summer months. I always wondered why the US never had disclaimers on this as well.

      Because it stops money flow. Everything is about money and greed. So you spend on the food then get rushed to the hospital, in which you will be billed for the ambulance and the care. Or your family starts to process how much a funeral is and pay that. Sad world

    Don't eat oysters if you're further than a day's walk from the ocean or gulf. Seriously. Same with fresh gulf shrimp. Frozen is ok, but fresh go bad quickly. Don't risk it.

    I was born and raised in Everglades City, Florida, we are a fishing, crabbing community. Never eat raw oysters in the summer.

    Never eat raw oysters during the summer months. I was in Taipai once eating oysters and I was so sick ended up in the hospital and was sick for over a month and one point I thought I was not going to make it. Drink tons of water every day when you get sick, I lost over 30 lbs during the times I was sick eating oysters.

      One time for whatever reason I suddenly craved raw oysters. I never eat that thing. But the craving was overpowering. No I was not pregnant.
      Well I bought a jar. That's right, they come in a jar, pasteurized or something. Still tastes raw but safe(r). Drizzled them with lime juice & chopped onions. Yumyumyum.
      Happiness.
      And then I never ate them again. I must have been zinc deficient that time...

    My first husband came close to dying from this as well. It was touch and go for about 6 months, many hospital stays and almost losing him several times. It only takes one bad oyster to kill you!

They weren’t bad but I never developed a taste for them and haven’t had them in probably 15 years. The cost of them helped to not order them. And the people in this thread talking about cooking oysters makes me cringe. There are just too many kinds of food in this world to eat cooked oysters, brussel sprouts, beets, or liver

    My sister ate sushi on vacay in Europe. She got itchy butt worms which was resistant to regular dewormer. She had to ingest some ground up coral....😱
    A friend's Mom in the Philippines loved to eat green salads. We never eat green RAW leaves there; she got some chronic diarrheal disease.
    A colleague who loved sushi during his Japanese visit decided to make sushi from local fish. He had to go to ER.
    "Everything has to pass through fire, unless it's fruits which you wash with soap and water, then peel". We were taught that in home ec.

      We really don't have those commonly available. Maybe in hotels for westerners.
      Yes. Salads are blanched. You don't have to but it's your funeral ⚱️
      If it's cucumber, you wash & peel.
      It's a tropical climate! EVERYTHING grows well and fast, specially microbes & parasites.
      If you don't know, some farmers use manure to fertilize crops. Even over here... I think you have heard of E.coli and salmonella poisoning. Not to mention cholera, hepatitis, etc.

      @@cynthiagonzalez658 Thanks for sharing. We get occasional outbreaks but its usually due to farmers pooing on the plants or workers not washing their hands after the restroom. We are pretty "sheltered" here everything is packaged or fake so its not really something we think about. Ive seen the TV show 'monsters inside of me' where they have shown ppl getting parasites from eating lettuce that had chopped snails in it but I didnt give it much thought beyond ensuring that I wash my veggies well. Thanks again I definitely look at greens differently now.

      It's not the snails, yeah it's the poo contaminants in the fields.
      Although snails could be host to other parasites, as I learned in parasitology classes. Isn't life exciting?!😑😱😉
      Our parents always joke that those yummy highlands strawberries that we love, were organically fertilized by the highland tribal ppl. We wash everything to death. If they can't pass over the fire.

    I've eaten fried oysters once im California and that was in 1994 and I would not ever eat them raw or raw fish I just like my food cooked .Prayers to this family .

    In the Philippines, we didn't like eating anything that did not pass over the fire. No green salads; you never know.
    Fruits are washed in soap and water before getting peeled; Home ec. teachers told us that.

      Well slaves ate them Bc they had nothing else. They set up booths around town which drew crowds. Ppl wanted to know what the race was about they tried too. Oysters went from food for poor ppl to a luxury! Just like lobster! So desperation then trend is why it is eaten today.

As a lacto-ovo vegetarian, l have avoided *all* the pandemics by being scrupulously clean; even when l lived in China during the *SARS* breakout. I lived and taught hygiene, even to a staff of Chinese doctors.

    I use to consume raw oysters every weekend in the 70s, 80s at well known restaurants in Florida - until I started hearing about some people getting deathly ill from eating them. It wasn’t from any place in Florida but that was the end of consuming them for me. - but oh how I loved them. A Saltine cracker, ketchup, horse radish and a plump raw oyster. Yum !!!! and yeah - always followed the rule of consuming raw oysters only in the months which contained the letter “R”. I believe they came from the Gulf of Mexico.
