    7% of reproduction per cycle means they will garanteed to lay an egg on the 15th day, since they live 25 cycles, they will only lay one egg and will not multiply within the kill room. your additional fish is coming from the breeding room. if no breeding room, the kill room's number will remain constant.

    Nice compact build, simple too, if you separate the egg to another room above the 1-tile fish tank, you don't need to open the room at all, the pacus below will not get the cramped debuff as long as the fish tank room is 8 tiles in size. The eggs in the room above will hatch and then flop down to the tank. Just use an open door to separate the rooms
    Edit: someone already mentioned this in another comment

    You can make this without the conveyor shutoff by putting the conveyor chute in line with your rail up to the kill room. Have the critter sensor only send green when critters are below 4. it will open up and drop the next egg into the breeding room but will close up again and allow the excess eggs to go through to kill room, just make sure the autosweeper can't re-sweep that fallen egg and create an infinite cycle

  • @TheJollyKraut
    @TheJollyKraut 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You should add another rail that feeds eggs from the killing room back into the tank onto the "incubation shelf" in case your Pakus die and there aren't enough eggs to replace them right away.

    Actually you don’t need to have water touching the egg. When the pacu hatches it will crawl towards the water pool. At least it did when I was playing ONI a year ago.

    • @energeticsecret2883

      That is true, pacu can flop it's way back to water but nilaus also wants to have more 'water space' to fit more pacus in the breeding room without overcrowding debuff.

    There is a failure point with this, with the open kill room. If you have enough fish, and enough other animals on the map (in the connected open bit), they can become cramped. The better solution is to close it off and not have any eggs in the same room. If there's no eggs they don't become cramped, ever. That's why most people use the automation heavy versions.

    • @Nilaus
      @Nilaus  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Good point but I think it is a rather theoretical point failure point. At least in my type of base it will not happen easily. Having more than 100 Pacu also seems counterproductive due to computation. There will be enough food for all.

    • @xxGHOSTxx56
      @xxGHOSTxx56 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      does that count with all pets?
      no eggs = no cramped?

    • @MrDerReiter
      @MrDerReiter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xxGHOSTxx56 something like that, but there is a feature; pacu count eggs within all tiles of a room, no matter it's of liquid or isn't. If the room is contingently boundless, they never stop laying eggs. But they might be "overpopulated" and get glum since this status counts only with liquid tiles (and there is only one). Anyway pacu in that room become glum 'cause they aren't fed. However, this not prevent them from reproduction to keep their number, only prevent from fast breeding and raising population.

      @@Nilaus There will be enough food for all I'm sure. It's not theoretical though, it happened to me and to Francis John as well on one of his play throughs.
      The issue is when it does happen, stocks can get very low very quickly, if you're as daft as I was and didn't notice.

    On think I found out that the hard way is that it takes a long time to tame a pacu using seeds. You'll most likely want to tame your initial cohort with algae and then switch them to seeds after.

  • @SuperBooneman

    Something really strange is happening with this build. I have it exactly as you do, except I have a 1 square room above the overflow aquarium for the eggs (as others in the comments suggested.) So, pacu hatch and flop down to the water. It ran smoothly at first, but now every few cycles I check the tank and find a bunch of pacu in the main aquarium. I could not for the life of me figure out where the pacu were coming from. It just happened again, so I reloaded from the start of the cycle and watched the farm to see what is going on. About 30 eggs hatched (basically all at once), and I watched every single one flop down into the overflow, as they should. Somehow, by monitoring it the problem disappeared. The only thing I can figure is that if the farm is off screen, oni might be processing things slightly different (for performance purposes maybe?) resulting in a bug where they somehow phase down through the tiles into the main tank. Just a wild guess really, but other than that I'm stumped.

    • @Gimpford
      @Gimpford ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly the same issue, after a while tropical pacu are in the main tank & no normal pacu, they are clipping down through the solid tile. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this please?

    • @krvcg806
      @krvcg806 ปีที่แล้ว

      little late here but use his design but with a conveyor meter set to 1 that resets every cycle
      (if you dont know how to do that you can use a normalized reset by putting down a cycle sensor with any option other than 100% or 0% uptime and a signal counter you put to 1 and connect to it. let the output of the counter go into the reset input from the counter and the reset input from conveyor meter
      alternatively use 3 filtergates set to 200 seconds for a whole cycle. dont use the alternate methode if you have a speedup mod, it will mess with the automation)

    So my question is why use the conveyor shutoff at all? You have two loaders already, can't you just hook up the sensor to disable the top loader when the population is high enough and save the power or am I missing something? Otherwise I added an egg hatching mini room above the pool and used this design. Great work! Hopefully I'll be *swimming* in fish in due time. Trying for surf and turf for 12 dupes so this will be a godsend. Thanks!

    • @ZarchAlDain
      @ZarchAlDain ปีที่แล้ว

      I seem to remember that the sweeper will still load the loader, even if disabled. The main problem is control over numbers though. If you have 1 pacu and 3 eggs, then it lays another egg then all 4 eggs get sent to the kill room.

    Is there any reason why you were exclusively using pacu as opposed to its variants or will it work with the other variants too (specifically tropical)

    • @thepencilcunts
      @thepencilcunts ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely a temperature management thing, as having a source of cold or heat like that in the middle of your base isn't good for genrral temperature. You might be able to farm variants if you allocate some space elsewhere but there's no real reason to

    Frustratingly this design fails if all your paku are born close to each other, as all four of them lay their eggs well before dying therefore the eggs are removed, leaving four paku which can no longer lay eggs in the tank...... Ergo you end up with no paku in the tank! This is compounded by a critter sensor counting eggs on the conveyor rail meaning you can't even bump start it again by dumping all your spare eggs in! I had to setup an automatic dispenser above with a max weight set so 4kg (a single egg) to drip-feed some eggs back in

    sorry to inform you but it is not infinite food as the number of pakuin one tile aquarium is dependent on eggs in that tile and it will reach a peak in some time (as paku will not lay an egg in the infinite storage) and paku in the breeder tank will only repopulate.try to seperate eggs from the infinite tank as the fishes will only lay an egg before their eventual demise, and keep the cycle running
