  • ▽▲The Melon Pan Tradition: Japanese Sweet Bread▲▽
"Melonpan" in English is called "" Japanese Sweet Bread". It's the most popular item at Japanese bakeries and available at every convenient store and supermarket all over the country, but in Asakusa, one shop sticks to the traditional taste. It's located right next to Senso-ji Temple, one of Japan's most famous attractions.
It looks like a melon, but does it taste like one?
In this episode, we go to Asakusa Kagetsudo and talk with owner Yuki-san who has been making melonpan for many years. He explains his passion and why it's so popular in Japan. John sits down for breakfast and enjoys a piping hot melonpan with a green melon soda, the shop's recommended combination! Melonpan is best when it's right out of the oven.
This show has been created and produced by John Daub ( ジョン・ドーブ ). He's been living and working in Japan for over 16 years and regularly reports on an International TV Show for Japan's International Channel.
Casting light on quirky, funny & amazing Japanese culture in a way only seen through the eyes of a foreigner! Join us as we penetrate deep into the heart of Japan!

I just baked melon pan from scratch. They came out so soft, warm, and sweet. They were so so good. I'll try to bake anpan next time. It was a humongous challenge but the end result was great and tasty.

Reminds me of a concha! Really good but not too sweet. But I like that about a lot of Mexican sweet bread... They're not over powering with sweetness... I wanna try one of these to compare 😁

Sorry if this is like 2 yrs ago, but haha just saw this now: I've had Concha and it was cake like texture and the Melon Pan had a soft airy bread inside, and had a stronger butter flavor on the crust. Both are great!

We got the concha from the Japanese Melon bread. Had a long debate against my Japanese friend on who made it first. Googled it and we got it from the Japanese!

Stuffed my face with kombini melon pan when I was there some 7+ years ago... I must've bought like 10 times out of the 22 days me and my family was there. I ate quite a lot of different stuff everyday, but melon pan probably was the one thing I repeated the most. I also tried almost everything I could find different on vending machines... pretty sure things increased in variety quite a lot over the years.
Weirdly enough, the kombini melon pan I bought did have melon flavoring. Came in a green packet that had a melon-like looks to it.
Lightly sweet and with this light melon flavor too, very soft and light, and it had the traditional look to it with the grid like round shape.
We also went to a restaurant that was basically all you can eat bread related stuff. Bakeries in Japan are impressive as hell... I've never seen this much variety of bread recipes in any other country. Not sure if it was a thing of the period since Yakitate!! Japan was still pretty recent, but everywhere we went had bakeries with such a huge variety of stuff that you could spend a month trying different things everyday.
It's quite the different experience from what you hear on a family of migrants that came from Japan to Brazil during WWII. I went with 6 relatives, my mom, and a friend of relatives... unanimously the best vacation to another country we had, out of several other countries we visited individually in the past. I've never been outside the country after that trip basically because I'm saving money to go there again. xD

i'm marathoning these videos right now. i'm so glad i stumbled across them! i recognized john from tv.
i've been to this place in asakusa, but i didn't have their bread. i had the soft ice cream which is also great. i do love melon pan though. one of my very favourite things to eat when i was there.
i think what the guy said about melon pan being a treat everyone likes is right on, not just for japanese people but foreigners too. a lot of people from western countries don't like the more traditional tastes like red bean. great business decision.

It's crazy how Japan's culture is a lot like ours, Mexican. The word pan to us means bread, and the melon pan they call looks exactly just like our pan we call concha or conchitas.

+Jorge Abundis I always felt the language is somewhat similar in pronunciation. The vowels are all constant. Recently there is a Mexican food boom in Tokyo. I wonder how much is mexican and how much is American-Mexican though :) Anyway, it's so good! -john

ONLY in JAPAN Very good point I felt the same way too, idk if it has to do with the colonization of Spain. Either way I'm glad we have that and hopefully more in common because I love their culture! That's really good to hear, I wish I could go and see it for myself. I think if I tried the food there I would be able to tell authenticity. Hopefully Mexican I don't like when they half ass (excuse my language)our traditional plates. Ps Love your show, keep up the good work!

Americans likely recognize the similarity of the melon pan to the Mexican concha, this is no coincidence. Both of those originate from the Iberian peninsula (Spain and Portugal) and were brought over by Europeans during the age of exploration. Just like the Japanese melon pan, the Mexican concha (which means seashell in Spanish) takes its name from the shape of the cuts on top of the bread
