I like that in Japan everything seems to be of much convenience. They're instant meals, drinks, and snacks for busy life yet the culture of making healthy home cooked meals is still there. While instant food in other countries seems to look as unhealthy as it really is...almost always sloppy. It doesn't seem that way in Japan.
I once went to Japan and there was a vending machine at the pier that sold live bait for the fishermen. I bought a live squid-like creature, played with it, and then released it into the sea.
When I was in Japan as a transfer student, one of the biggest things that stood out for me when walking the streets of Kyoto is how common these machines were. Virtually every street corner had a duo or trio of vending machines selling 100 - 300 yen tea or coffee shots.
No kidding. I was in Kyoto a few months back and you couldn't walk very far without running into a vending machine. After vending machines, the next most common thing were convenience stores, it seemed like that in both Tokyo and Kyoto there were convenience stores every block or 2. My family and I were lucky in that the hotels we stayed in both Kyoto and Tokyo were close to lots of vending machines as well conveniences stores.
I was in Kyoto in July 2023 and can confirm. We stayed at a Ryokan and found two 100 yen machines selling 200ml Coke. That's 0.71 US dollars, good luck finding that anywhere in the West!
@@gnnascarfan2410 Why would one waste money on a 200ml bottle of non-alcoholic beverage in summer though? This is ridiculous, since per liter you'll pay 500 Yen and for two 1000 Yen (I know, striking math). A two liter water bottle at the konbini will be around 120 Yen. So I don't know why 100 Yen for 200ml should be so good. Especially when you can get 500ml drinks for 100-130 Yen. I just looked it up and at one German supermarket chain, a 330ml bottle of coke costs 0.66€, converting that to 200ml and into Dollars makes it $0.444. I know, there is a price difference because of 200ml and 330ml but in Germany we don't have 200ml because it's stupid. A 1.5l bottle of coke cost about 160 Yen in the konbini iirc. But imma take some Pocari or Calpis over some coke.
I think it would be great if we could have more different kinds. Our soda machines offer only a handful of sodas (not to mention that every medical facility in the tristate area seems to have made an exclusive deal with Pepsi and therefore only Pepsi products can be purchased no matter how many floors of the hospital you visit) and most vending machines offer the exact same array of snacks with a few variations. I did recently see an ice cream vending machine and I just had to use it because it was so cool :) At my husband's office they have one that has things the employees could eat for lunch if necessary, but I would love to see a change to that one because it is full of the sorts of things that make McDonalds sound healthy. I love the idea of being able to get rice balls and other healthy but delicious foods from a machine. It could really change America if we could have healthy vending machines!
I really want to visit Japan. . . maybe even live there for a while . . . These vending machines only make me want to travel there even more. Japan is my favorite Country.
I like the B&M bread with raisins... open can, slice, smother with butter, nuke it for fifteen seconds and drink milk with it... But I’m on a diet so have to refrain from things like that until I’m back down to my proper weight (which is hard to do, with a bad back most exercises I need and like are out of the question)...
I have seen canned bread/cake as far back as the early early 80's. It was in a standard Campbell's soup sized can with a pull top. It popped right out with waxed paper around the body. 2 Varieties: Fruit cake, and chocolate with chocolate chips. Even us kids would not eat it. Dense, Greasy, and Disgusting, LOL!
What shithole do you live in? I've never seen a vandalized vending machine in Norway. They're all over the US too, where you rarely find vandlized machines.
Running vending machines in hospitals, schools, universities, train stations and education centers *is a good business.* At some point of time there will be shops that give out regular products, just like the vending machines do.

I miss Japan so much. I remember telling my family all the time about the amount of vending machines there. On train rides back to where I live, I would count how many vending machines I could spot out the window. Definitely going to go back there on day!
A reason to miss Japan -- vending machines! I missed them so much when I left Japan for a few months. I also miss a lot of things in the US, esp the junk food!! :) The machines will be waiting for your return to Japan! Thanks for the comment Jordan J! -John
Japan is Great in every aspect!! I loved visiting there as a service member. It's true, vending machines everywhere but it's been improved significantly !! Japan in general is great in services!!! 2 thumbs up !!!
Eternal Odyssey Agreed. And not to mention fountain drink dispensers...I'm not a big fan of the touch-screen set-up. It's convenient, but I don't like 20-30 different sodas coming out of one nozzle. It doesn't feel...right.
As much I love the vending machines in Japan, they also highlight how much packaging they use in Japan. It's a really terrible waste of ressources to wrap bananas individually.
+Jasmin Villegas It's US$1 = 120 JPY right now. Sorry about that but the exchange rate has changed a lot since I made this. It's better not to list prices in USD since it swings between US$1 = 80 JPY to 130 JPY * When I came to Japan in 1998, it was US$1 = 145 JPY!! In 2012 it was US$1 = 78 so ... Hope that helps. -John
As of now you could just move the decimal 2 spaces to get a rough estimate of the price. So something that is 200 yen would roughly cost $2 in USD. Another example is an item that costs 2350 yen which would be VERY ROUGHLY $23.50 in USD. Higher the number the less close you'll actually be to the correct USD amount. Or if you can quickly do the math 2350 yen would be 2350 divided by 100 and then times 9

I really want to go to Japan but my mum doesn't like the nuclear stuff there, if there wasn't that. She would definitely take me there. But another thing is that I live in Australia, and it's a 17 hour plane trip. And I hate long trips. How long does it take for somebody in America to get to Japan?
Wish we had those here in Norway, don't think they would get vandalized either. They should really start doing this kind of thing outside japan, makes getting a drink or some fast food so much less of a hassle
From a vending machine? You do realise a banana vending machine is quite a special thing. It can't be used for selling bananas per kg, like any grocery store would. The expenses of running a vending machine selling fresh fruits as delicate as bananas would be much higher than in a grocery store.
despite all the "fake" food filled with preservatives and such like everyone is talking about, someone in japan still has a longer life expectancy than the average guy in the US.
Japanese people are the number 1 long living people on earth. But this year, they came in 2nd. I don't know about the "fake" food stuff in Japan, but in China, they have a lot of fake food since I once visit there 5 months ago to visit my grandma and grandpa and there were a bunch of trash on the ground... ~Sigh~ I wish Chinese would stop being too stubborn and cheap (since they will have to pay to change the enviroment) and start caring about their enviroment.
Thank you for making very detailed and informative videos on Japan and Japanese culture John. A lot of the information you have presented in your videos was very helpful when me and my girlfriend visited Japan this spring. Standing to the left on Tokyo escalators and to the right on Osaka escalators sure came in handy.
Today I was so tired from work, I still had stuff to do at home but when I did my work I saw this video showing up and now I'm thinking of going to Japan after I I'm done with school.
I definitely miss having all of those great vending machines everywhere I went. It was one most unexpectedly fun parts of my trip to Japan along with all of the great convenience stores. My standard routine for when I was there was for my family to hit the convenience stores for dessert nearly every night after dinner and bring it back to our hotel room to eat.
I want to go to Japan now. I love vending machines! They were my favorite thing when I was younger and Loved the way they worked! So, it's pretty much heaven. Good thing you told me not to shake it. Otherwise, id be in jail on the first day.
Hey John I knew that this video was out there and that it’s a little older but our local news in Cincinnati Ohio (not to be punny but yeah I know what Ohio means in Japanese) had something on and I copied this videos web link into my Twitter account and sent it to them because the story was about the new coffee Coca-Cola in a can which I know Japan has had for a while now. Our AM newsman seemed to like your informative video! Maybe it will get you a few more American subscribers! Thanks John, love those vids!
Interesting and informative video and a polished presentation. I think Japan has realized a very lucrative, expandable and convenient source of commercialism, industrialism and capitalism. The large bustling cities across America find it hard to adapt and/or adjust to life in the vending machine 'lane'. The concept along with the assortment and selection is fantastic; I'm all for it. The machine tampering monitor/oversight is very forward thinking.
Thank you! I've been trying my best to improve the quality of the series each episode. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment! -John
7-Elevens are so much better in Asia. The sandwiches, rice, hot plates, and more are vastly more delicious and even nutritious than our tacitos, personal pizza, and wings. We really get the shaft when it comes to the quality and wider range of 7/11 foods.
@pluto Right, especially when it's in a different language but the pictures help. Another thing was that everything is much cheaper than you would expect to pay stateside. I had an egg omelette with cheese and veg plus a side of basil fried rice for about 100 baht or about $3 and it was delicious.
I'm wondering when they're going to have vending machines that bottle the drinks right in the machine. Like the newish soda fountains at fast food restaurants that you can choose just about any flavor combination of any soda and hi-c, but they just fill up a bottle.
+3MarkLIVE3 this video is kind of creepy, for example how like everything has to have some manga bs attached to it .....like stepping into a society run by the Disney corporation.
+Edgar G Sigh... You need a dose of C.S. Lewis: _“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”_
automation has only made humans more free as we can open new possibilities of labor that require intellect instead of brawn. and with these new frontiers we’d need human force until we could automate it. now there are more minds working then ever...at least thats what i think is happening.

Australia is way worse. Expensive stuff, boring products, nanny state laws, far away from the rest of the world and a stupid government. Makes me want to move to Japan.
soukupb good you don't even live near Uruguay lmao
WillTheConqueror Don't forget how everything wants to kill you.
omg people living in first world country complaining how their country sucks. my place has shit government and just a shit hole as a whole.
reason why america don't got vending machine like japan
because people would break into them or steal it

Japan is the same

Notes: 120 yen = US$1 (updated April 2015)
* The hair whip at the end is becoming legendary!
* There are porn machines in Japan, but that's a whole other episode!
* Japan has little vandalism which is why these machines are possible on the street and in alleys.
-John
WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN Thanks for the tip.

roblox If you have American Money go to the bank and transfer it into Yen or something im not sure

I got my law degree from a vending machine in Japan.
... okay, that's just funny!!
Can you buy happiness from a vending machine?
This is crazy, vending machines that offer actual hot cooked meals, that's so badass, I wish there were some of that around where I live.
Dat username and pic thou xD
I miss Japan so much. I remember telling my family all the time about the amount of vending machines there. On train rides back to where I live, I would count how many vending machines I could spot out the window. Definitely going to go back there on day!
A reason to miss Japan -- vending machines! I missed them so much when I left Japan for a few months. I also miss a lot of things in the US, esp the junk food!! :) The machines will be waiting for your return to Japan! Thanks for the comment Jordan J! -John
I really had to remind myself that slurping noodles is complimentary in Japan.
Japan is Great in every aspect!! I loved visiting there as a service member. It's true, vending machines everywhere but it's been improved significantly !! Japan in general is great in services!!! 2 thumbs up !!!
D: didn't like hearing that electronic is taking over, the physical ones are so cool to look at.
True
Eternal Odyssey Agreed. And not to mention fountain drink dispensers...I'm not a big fan of the touch-screen set-up. It's convenient, but I don't like 20-30 different sodas coming out of one nozzle. It doesn't feel...right.
I'm amazed of how modernized Japan is, i would love too live there one day and become an engineer.
VideoGamePro Japanese is most advanced people, they know and aware law even without authority observe them. People in my country will vandalize it
VideoGamePro fukushima bruh. Half the country is radiated to shit.
CashMoney I know, but what can you do?
Dongle
Richard Spillers hah no. Not an outsider. Its not like how whites treat people lol. People a generally seen as human beings not really by nationality
Japan is so unique, that's the only word i can find for it !
The culture shock is like BOOM
I wanna goooooo
As much I love the vending machines in Japan, they also highlight how much packaging they use in Japan. It's a really terrible waste of ressources to wrap bananas individually.
Exactly what I thought !!
Who else feels like they need to go to Japan just to try all the vending machines? And of course the Pokemon center..
Am I the only one that would constantly stop to change yen to usd and figure out the price .-.
+Jasmin Villegas It's US$1 = 120 JPY right now. Sorry about that but the exchange rate has changed a lot since I made
this. It's better not to list prices in USD since it swings between US$1 = 80 JPY to 130 JPY
* When I came to Japan in 1998, it was US$1 = 145 JPY!! In 2012 it was US$1 = 78 so ... Hope that helps. -John
+Jasmin Villegas ha...try needing to convert it to Won and then converting that to USD....I mostly have won now but also use USD from back home...
lol when i was there i was doing the same thing .... which was useless since 1usd is approximately just 100 japanese yen
Jasmin Villegas
you can use prepaid Suica or Pasmo debit card,,its also good for trains, subways and in convenience stores,,no need to carry any change
Squidward would proabaly love Japan because of the canned bread :P
I instantly thought of that when I saw the canned bread.
Yum!
Dat Name HA. Me too
Squidward: WOW! They have it! CANNED BREAD! This place is GREAT! :D
william rogers WE have canned bread here, just 1 kind, a Brown bread.. It I sin a red can, and the name escape s me now, it lasts a LONG time!
I like everything in Japan. I can't wait to visit Japan again.
why dont they have these in other countries i mean it is really space/money efficient
dudester101 After a while, there seems to be too many down here, actually! :) Every street corner seems to have it and makes you wonder..."how much food and drink do you want to have in a day?" -WAORYU staff
WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN
well yeah but you would think there would be some i mean i have never seen one like thet i mean yeah there a few drink machines here and there but it would be pretty cool if you could get other stuff too
dudester101 maybe it works in Europe or other big cities, but mostly people like to have privacy with big yards in NA especially when you have kids
Do u even hear yourself?
Your videos are very awesome and filled with great infromation. I learn about Japan, and it amazing diffrances. I hope to be able to visit one day. Keep up the grest work man.
the banana vending machine would be great in America to help with obesity.
rutendo muregerera dole food company is american brand why so many people are fat and retarded in there?
rutendo muregerera no one here would eat them...
I'd love a banana machine at work, I bring one daily, but there's always the day you run out!
rutendo muregerera If only it didnt cost about $1.30 for a small ass banana
I would love it
私は子供の頃の懐かしさを求めて古い自動販売機を探していますが新しい自動販売機も、どんどん進化してとても面白いですね😂

hey i love watching your videos. i will be traveling to japan next summer with some of my class mates so we can learn the culture of japan.
Great job on this video! EASILY THE BEST vending machine documentary I've ever seen! And i've seen -them all- a couple of them I guess... ;] F'real though!
imagine the poor guys that have to stock all those vending machines
how come we're not allow to have these vending machines in the USA?
+kanna231 fat fuks
We'd ruin em 😔
Aside from the risk of being vandalized people also can't really get these types of vending machines here. Too much of a cultural divide.
+Kelly Chuang Well we could have them, we just don't .
+The Bunny That also is what's on my mind as well. The US is a danger zone for vending machines like this.
Want More Vending Machines? Check out the Japanese Sake Vending Machines video where you can taste 120 different kinds at the same place!

+Beautiful Japanese Women Are you in NY now?
+Beautiful Japanese Women Can we meet in person i really love japanese women i lives in Boston Ma
The vending machines are one thing in Japan I'm most jealous of.
everything in japan so easy!my teacher said service in japan is really good and efficient,i love japan!
That's right, and you don't need to tip, either! Ask your teacher to explain "omotenashi" to you. It's a deep concept that means more than service. It's a kind of way of life for all guests including customers. This concept is runs deep in almost all Japanese people. -John
WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN i love how you still try to reply to all the comments, even on videos released like 3 years ago. Love your videos man. Keep it up xD
japan4life
12:26 maybe it's maybelline
+saintxbarbie That creeper-stache gave it away. XD
hahaha
chronicstamped
chronicstamped 😂😂😂
the bread in a can looks so freaking good
Am I the only one that thought the weirdest thing was someone taking a massive swing of fresh hot coffee like a psychopath.
"A perfect hot cup of coffee..."
Which is usually served between 160F and 185F (71.1C to 85C).
Skin suffers 3rd degree burns in 2 seconds at 150F.
This man is not right in the head.
Cant wait till go to Japan in 2015 it looks awesome !
Japan seems awsome
Yeah I am going when I'm older but I wanna go now >_< I'm only 9 so...
I am only 10
John Walter Oh
I really want to go to Japan but my mum doesn't like the nuclear stuff there, if there wasn't that. She would definitely take me there. But another thing is that I live in Australia, and it's a 17 hour plane trip. And I hate long trips. How long does it take for somebody in America to get to Japan?
I takes around 18 hrs to 22 hrs I think.
man i wish they had Vending Machines out here in America like japan
yea i know
kennetta Wright they wouldn't last ,
It will all be lost in the morning :)
@Moritz Schmidt RIP that vending machine.
Wish we had those here in Norway, don't think they would get vandalized either. They should really start doing this kind of thing outside japan, makes getting a drink or some fast food so much less of a hassle
130 Japanese yen almost equals 140 Pakistani rupees and for that much money you can buy 20 bananas here.
@GELATO no sour diesel M listen to the unbiased channels or visit any youtuber channel who has been to Pakistan. You will be surprised.
From a vending machine? You do realise a banana vending machine is quite a special thing. It can't be used for selling bananas per kg, like any grocery store would. The expenses of running a vending machine selling fresh fruits as delicate as bananas would be much higher than in a grocery store.
Grey goose you dont know if its dirty or not also i dont think its dirty
Legend has it that you will never see a person stocking a vending machine in Japan.
Legend broken.....
despite all the "fake" food filled with preservatives and such like everyone is talking about, someone in japan still has a longer life expectancy than the average guy in the US.
~Sigh~ I wish Chinese would stop being too stubborn and cheap (since they will have to pay to change the enviroment) and start caring about their enviroment.
the more you stay, the more you broke :(
Thank you for making very detailed and informative videos on Japan and Japanese culture John.
Danny Gaona i think you meant homework?
The machine tampering monitor/oversight is very forward thinking.
very informative video !!!!
Thank you! I've been trying my best to improve the quality of the series each episode. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment! -John
multiple active vending machine in the night of the street when all shop closed is just heart warming.
It's remarkable to see how much your video-making skills developed comparing recent episodes with these earlier ones. Still a great video!
Bruh they only spent 10.47 USD on that lunch ........
That's how much ¥1140(yen) is worth in the U.S.
not really that impressive i can get more food at wendys or mcdonalds for less
Maybe thats why N.Americans are obese. So much food available at such a lower cost. Sorta unfair compare to the rest of the world.
Better quality in alotta cases.
Wont find that in a US machine.
yes but super crappy fake food u get - if u think u are healthy think again
We have coffee, ramen, and microwavable dinner vending machines at my work, though you have to heat the ramen & dinners seperately.
The U.S. has walk-in vending machines, it's called 7-Eleven.
LOL this is so ~awesome~ btw is that a pig looking at you angry/sad @ 7:30 because you buy ramen with bacon? XD
Oh man, I would flip out if they brought these machines to Canada. We only have chocolate bars, chips, and drinks in our machines.
I'm wondering when they're going to have vending machines that bottle the drinks right in the machine. Like the newish soda fountains at fast food restaurants that you can choose just about any flavor combination of any soda and hi-c, but they just fill up a bottle.
5:35 "ahh, nature." HHe says as cars wizz by in the background, lmao.
I really enjoy the videos on the different kinds of vending machines in Japan.
America step your vending game up haha this is awesome
I think エロ本 is one of my favorite japanese words
I feel like I'm watching a kids show w/ the narration and music. #NotMeantForAdults
Here's the newest vending machine video based on a vending restaurant: th-cam.com/video/d8Z80J3jOao/w-d-xo.html Is it any better? #suitableforfamilies
+3MarkLIVE3 so what is an adult ?
+3MarkLIVE3 and?
+3MarkLIVE3 this video is kind of creepy, for example how like everything has to have some manga bs attached to it .....like stepping into a society run by the Disney corporation.
+Edgar G
Sigh... You need a dose of C.S. Lewis:
_“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves.
And I'm an American who lives and Japan and you can find a vending machine anywhere. It's a magical place.
Japan: A great place for people who are scared to talk to strangers-
They are all amazing except the banana one, to munch unneeded plastic.

In vending machine
I saw a vending machine in Nashville that sold guitar strings, drumsticks, and other musical accessories.
In front of Gruhn Guitars, for example?🤔
Never been to Nashville nor have I been to the mainland USA, though😅
Plot twist , vending machines are going to take daily jobs
I don't think the Japanese mind. They don't have anyone to fill those jobs anyhow. The rest of us are totally screwed though.
automation has only made humans more free as we can open new possibilities of labor that require intellect instead of brawn. and with these new frontiers we’d need human force until we could automate it. now there are more minds working then ever...at least thats what i think is happening.
also yes theyll take them but i think youd find more interesting and fulfilling jobs. now to the more intellectually challenged...
