The slam dunk manga made me love the sport of basketball. You get to learn the sport while Sakuragi is learning and it’s such an immersive experience. The art really just jumps out at you too so it’s such a fun reading experience
Exactly why Kuroko isn't among my top 3 sports anime. After a while, it becomes just vibes and just so predictable . Smth you'll watch just to chill (without giving much thought) Still love it tho
Not until Kuroko and Seirin got their as* kicked by Aomine in their 1st game... That sh*t was a brutal loss to them that even Kuroko cried and so devastated after taking the L
Kagami wows you while Sakuragi inspires you. Whether they win or lose in Kuroko I'm there to see the special powers. With slam dunk you experience the highest highs and the lowest lows with Shohoku. It's an entire emotional journey.
You did a great job of breaking down some of the key tonal differences in each show while being respectful to each intellectual property. Shoutout to you!
When Slam dunk was first shown on TV, it INFLUENCED a generation to play and love basketball, or try sports. In Ph, lot of kids in my time grew watching Slam Dunk and lot of them were influenced to take interest to such sport and some even became sport players themselves eventually. That’s how iconic Slam Dunk is.
I wasn't around when Slam Dunk first dropped and im not from the PH but i've seen that a lot of commenters are and have been heavily influenced by the series to take up basketball. Its truly amazing to see a series really capture an audience and inspire them so well.
@@bingeboisThe timing too. It was also during the peak of basketball craze in the Philippines. When our Local League, the Philippine Basketball Association was at its peak, and the NBA was popular again with Jordan's return. We've never seen a basketball anime before. Only Super Robots and Dragon Ball Z.
Good points for me as someone who is not a basketball fan/player: ● Kuroko no Basket = storyline, animation, visuals, creativity (for tropes and other elements like each player's powers), and more advanced basketball skills ● Slam Dunk = storyline, more sport-centered, educational, character development, humor, and connection to the viewer (probably more preferred even by non-anime viewers) Both are great and entertaining. But I like Slam Dunk better. Its memorability is engraved more to me.
I've had a bunch of comments and seen that same sentiment from other people from the Philippines. Its incredible that a series was able to do that and inspire so an entire nation!
Slam dunk makes me so fuckin emotional and intense with each page durin a match.Thats why after all these years later Slam Dunk holds up,timeless masterpiece. Kuroko is entertaining just not on the same level
I stopped reading Kuroko's Basketball around volume 7, as I grew tired of how unrealistic it is. Whereas I have binging Slam Dunk. What volumes I can find, anyway. A lot of the early ones are tough to find nowadays.
Yeah, it really sucks that so many manga volumes are out of print due to COVID and other shit. Been trying to get my hands on the entire Slam Dunk series but some random volumes are nearly impossible to find
@@bingebois I did contact Viz Media directly asking if the original volumes have gone out of print, and if the new reprints will be released in the US. They simply said that due to supply issues, they can't keep Slam Dunk in stock and my best bet to find them is at my local comic shops.
You lasted long. I couldn't keep watching the anime after Season 2 and then said: Ok...let me read the manga. Might be better experience". Boy i was wrong. Stopped reading faster than i did watching the anime. As someone who played the sports on a professional level on Middle School,High School and College i just couldn't stop being mad at this series and how was a total insult to the sports. I don't mind when animes/manga goes with power fantasy trips making some bullshit situations, but maaaaaan Kuroko's Basketball just far and beyond level 100 of Prince of Tennis. I felt like the autor who probably really love basketball as much i do, was making fun of the sport i love the most and the one i dedicaded millions of hours. Basketball as a sports is the most beautiful, exciting and fresh thing you can watch. So creative, unique, special and always exciting that you don't need to put super powers or power trips on it because is already wonderful for what it is. I still can remember how exciting, hype and screaming out of my lungs i was. Even remembering it now i get my skin goosebumps. The moment on Slam Dunk when Rukawa just took off against Kainan and just turned into almost a one man army. He didn't need a power trip, he didn't need to shot 3's from the other basket, didn't do capoeira in the middle of the air or jump from the 3PT for a dunk. Was just pure a player hitting the zone.
@@RomnysGonzalez I agree. I loved playing basketball in my school days. I played a couple of seasons in youth league, and it was my favorite activity in gym class. We go to a few college basketball games a season, both mens and womens. As such, that's what turned me off Kuroko's. Making full-court shots every time, jumping super-high, and other supernatural abilities are the complete opposite of Slam Dunk's realism.
First i watched "Kuroko basketball" and I like it, but then I found out there's one anime about basketball "Slam dunk" and i will never regret it 🤩I was so amazed! "Slam dunk" is the best sport anime of all time!
I guess I don't agree with you, I prefer Kuroko no Basket more he's better in every way😎😎😏😏, and if you don't like my opinion, bang your head against the wall Salam Dunk said haha👎👎
I loved slamdunk.. as a young kid then, i had the same motivations as sakuragi, and saw basketball as a means to an end i desired.. however, as i continued devoting countless hours to the game, i grew to love basketball for what it was.. I was about to be a varsity player for my high school, and would be given a scholarship on my junior year.. sadly, one injury took it away from me.. to make matters worse, the money i wouldve gotten for the scholarship was cancelled, and my parents had to loan for me to receive medication.. and so i decided to quit the game. years later, ive grown to hate basketball.. not even watching a game, or not even thinking/talking about it. ive grown sour as a person too.. the injury not only took basketball away from me, but it took my entire "self" ..it was then i decided to just go to college, and pursue my academics. during my first few years at the university, my closest friend then asked me if i could join their minor league (not the official varsity team, of the school itself, we only represented our department/major).. i declined for obvious reasons, not explaining why.. but during our senior year, i decided to try for one last time.. it was four years before i finally collected the guts to try basketball again... my friend was already the captain then.. fast forward, we were at the finals of the said league, and somehow lost by just one shot, against the previous year's champs.. first runner up wasnt so bad after all. the same thing happened when we found ourselves playing against some of the players of the official varsity team of our university (who also happened to be playing for the national championship that year).. a lot of their key players werent playing, and the best player of the squad was the MVP of another minor league.. it was a non-serious, charity game.. but we managed to keep up with them, having lost to only a point. Their team won the national collegiate championship that year. i will forever be thankful for that moment. competing against some of the best players of my college years.. and this gave me a closure to what basketball was for me as a person. i may not have achieved the highest goal i intended when i was starting my journey.. but it surely redeemed all the pain the injury caused me. In the end, i understood how much i loved basketball.
The biggest issue for me with the 93 Slam Dunk anime was pacing. 100+ episodes to not even cover the full 300 chapter manga was way too much. Hopefully if the movie is popular enough we will get that remake.
I watched SD as a kid and multiple times in teenage years. But it hits different when I understand what a well writen story is after working as a marketer. It's impressive that the show aired almost 30 years ago and the structure is so well-built
I absolutely love this video, and Slam Dunk. I get caught up in the thrill of KNB, and I love how flashy the players pull of their plays and shots, but Slam Dunk just pulls my heart strings. I don’t think I’ve ever been so emotionally attached to a animation/manga. I absolutely love Slam Dunk, it deserves so much more than it is now. There is also a cool mobile game of Slam Dunk, it is slightly pay to win, but if you are interested, I suggest you try it.
I have heard about the Slam Dunk mobile game, but I haven't tried it yet! Might have to. I wonder if they'll do a big event on the game when the movie comes out?
Slam dunk is a love letter for a generation of Asian kids. There are a lots of regrets in your youth year. Not everyone can be a winner, the biggest would be not trying. I’m 32 now but every time I watch Slam Dunk when Mutchi kneel in front of couch, eyes full of tears and says the famous: “I want to play basketball.” Just drains me. I can’t wait to watch the new movie!!!
Well I think this two series are good since I watched them both but for me I like Slam Dunk than KnB not only because its realistic but also because it motivates you to play and practice more your skills in basketball like me.. The anime of slam dunk even though the animation is bad since its old but I still like it so.. I think lets wait for the movie of slam dunk next year.. BTW we have different taste of anime so just respect other's opinions .. XD.. Nice content , you earned another subscriber here
Slam Dunk is revolutionary in Japan because it made japanese people to play basketball when the sport itself is not that popular on that time. Anyone who read Slam Dunk in the past made them to sympathize with Sakuragi who's on his journey to be a basketball player because they are learning too while reading. When japanese people think basketball is just some throwing balls and a lame sport, the manga made the sport look cool.
Kuroko basketball is just the best in my opinion just because of how fun it is I literally want it to be unrealistic I like seeing crAzy speed never missing shots and whatever it is what it is it’s just like that
Great content here man! I personally loved Kuroko’s, but haven’t checked out slam dunk. I’m a big basketball fan so I’ll need to see a more realistic view of basketball anime. The abilities players have in Kuroko’s is more NBA2K-like than real basketball, but they made it super entertaining. Great work here! And great editing too! I know a lot of work goes into these videos
You should check that out. Unlike KNB where the protagonist is already a caliber player...in slam dunk. The protagonist started from zero knowledge about basket ball.. you know, like a zero-to-hero kind of story
Ive been playing basketball for 10 years Slam dunk and Kuroko No basket isn't even comparable to me. The way slam dunk shows progression of Sakuragi as a player, as-well as a person is spot on and some of the best writing i've seen in any media, i cant tell you how many times ive read all 276 chapters of it. (dont watch the anime read the manga) Kuroko No Basket is painful for me to watch, its painfully unrealistic and to me theres nothing relating to progression as a player, its just they have a perfected skill, watch them dominate and it's boring.
I disagree, while they may not be improving their skill in Kuroko's, they are changing the way they play. Aomine begins to trust his team, and the others realize that sacrificing the love of the game for winning makes you lose yourself. Its more akin to how some kids in AAU basketball feel with all the pressure adults put on them to succeed.
@@bingebois I understand where you're coming from, where they don't progress as a person but as player (hopefully i understood it right), but they seem to slam it in your face instead of letting the viewer see how he's changed as a player and him slowly trusting his teammates around him more and more. Slam dunk is able to show things like subtle character progression like how in the very beginning of the manga Sakuragi thinks he's the best player to ever exist and through the whole story he realises more and more how bad he is compared to other people who've worked much harder then him, through out the entire story. Aomine just suddenly changes and when he starts trusting his teammates it feels random, or at least it was for me. This could be the result of just the length of the stories, the length of the stories aren't really comparable, and if they were the same length i'm not sure if this would be a difference, but it is what it is.
That's the point. There was no reason for them to progress at the start. Then some NBA players came to their country and played with them. Now they realized there's still room for formidable opponents. In the end of the series, they're most likely joining the NBA. But this show is more about developing as a person. The basketball logic is just bullshit for the enjoyment the non-basketball fans who likes Dragon Ball and shit
As a ball player Kuroko is an exaggeration of players special traits or abilities (ball handling, shooting, speed, hops etc.) when players grow into their own n develop new skills on top of there mastered one ex. A windmill layup from the right to the left a simple “double clutch could b done but cuz it’s mastered u add some jelly to it” what I like bout kuroko is it shows that now shits definitely in an extreme way like midorima shootin full courts n aomine drawin a foul throwin it behind his back. But it’s the expression of the moveset showing how skilled players develop their skill to a point where it seems like they got “powers” or “abilities”
I don't have know Slam Dunk from both at the first. But with the time I had noticed I like it more cause it looks more real as the other. I had a Korukos Basket Calender and I have since 2 Years a Slam Dunk Poster at one Wall
Great content! I never understood the appeal of Kuroko. I guess because I saw the masterpiece called Slam Dunk before :) Just by the art, I know which one I'll choose.
The art in Slam Dunk and most of Inoue's work is so superb, its almost unfair to compare other manga art too it! Kuroko's is more of a fun spectacle, so if you were looking for something with incredible writing like Slam Dunk has, it might just not be up your alley
Kuroko has many flaws such as the fan service, especially the girl's representation, and the lack of logic and realism, it's fun to imagine basketball players doing these things but some skills were too cliche, the plot is good but it could have become way better with more realism and more intensity. Slam dunk is a legend because it's simply a player's growth story. No Onsen episode, no maid cafe episode, no random beach episode, the show had no fillers, no fan servicing, just pure art
Well i mean the anime for Slam Dunk did have major pacing issues due to stretching out the source material, HOWEVER what is there is some of the best in anime and manga history. That's just a fact
In Kuroko, there are only like 3 women who are relevant to the plot... Momoi, Riko, and Alex... Momoi's representation is actually a really great GM and a tactician as she can analyze and study opposing teams game and play styles that's why she is technically part of the GoM honestly... The fanservice for her though is having bigger b**bs than Seirin's coach but to be honest, it is just quite a normal size, not overly big like other animes do... I mean, even despite not having Aomine in the 1st half against Seirin, the Too B Squad is actually beating Seirin quite easily because of Momoi's strategies and observations of their opposing teams play styles... She can make a great GM... Riko on the other hand, she is a great coach to be honest, although, I do think she is over reliant at times to Kuroko and Kagami but she does help them improve their skills as a player whenever they train, specially that beach training they did to improved everyones skills... Alex on the other hand, well, she didn't impact as much as the 2 women(Riko and Momoi) as she is known playing in WNBA and Kagami's sensei when he was in US
for me, Slam Dunk isn't just about basketball, but more about the bittersweet of highschool year. hence the ending is perfect. Inoue Sensei capture it beautifully.
I think you should also note that Slam Dunk played a pivotal role as an anime/manga for a whole generation. I grew up watching it, and considering that I was a nerdy girl with no athletic ability and with generally no interest in sports, that Slam Dunk managed to capture my interest shows that it's a show that goes beyond just a simple sports anime. It's the relatable characters that's key, the slow development of each character, the way they interact, confront and overcome their struggles, and the way each character still manages to stand out. Not to mention that in relating to the characters, it brings the readers into a love for basketball. To this day, I still don't play or follow sports... except basketball.
Its undeniable the way that Slam Dunk has effected the entirety of anime and manga, alongside basketball in a lot of countries, it is one of the best and most iconic series of all time for reason. its cool to hear how many people picked up the game because of the series.
I was a similar girl as you, just an unathletic artistic kid, but it was because of a miniscule amount of exposure to Slam Dunk that I even held a basketball in my hands and tried to shoot baskets in school. While KuroBasu is great, Slam Dunk is powerful in captivating and inspiring its readers/viewers.
I both love this anime. their equally awesome to me. Maybe I just like how Kuroko na basuke's interpretation of the best player in each team. Enter the zone which specifically is just playing much harder than anyone else with extreme focus plus the undeniable talent. I like at the end part of the anime too when they show that the real zone is making your team mates join you in the zone which only means a 100% team chemistry just like how a number of championship teams are in sport.
I'm on manga and anime almost 40 years now...Slam dunk still the best sports manga...second goes to Hajime no ippo..,Slam dunk is full package what great sports manga/anime should be..good storyline, funny, good character development(almost all character in this comics have good development) and the art by Inoue-sensei still my fav.
Those are two of my favorite sports manga Ashwell! Ippo used to be top 2 but after I read Ashito No Joe my new top two are Slam Dunk and Joe. The art in Slam Dunk is so good and I still consider the high five between Sakuragi and Rukawa one of the best manga panels of all time
Watched both but I prefer SD 🏀♥️ It was very inspiring ✨ watching how Sakuragi leveled up from picking fights with delinquents and facing a potential bad future to an aspiring basketball player who gets to compete and hang out with the coolest and most ambitious athletes like Maki and Sendoh It just shows to young kids especially how making a right choice can completely change the outcome of your life...
Yeah I wouldn't recommend KNB to my young nephews when they want to play actual basketball. Slam Dunk, if I remember correctly, taught audience the basics of basketball because of Sakuragi's journey. Tried watching KNB then Slam Dunk then KNB again, and my god, I thought KNB was super cringey with their power moves. I just wish I didn't rewatch Slam Dunk because I was entertained with KNB specially with Aomine.
Slam Dunk is for sure more of a love letter to the actual game of basketball, while KNB is more about showing the flashiness of it. If you wanted someone to find a love of the game or just understand basketball better, Slam Dunk is the way to go
I watched both and obviously Slam Dunk is better. Not even a conversation. But I liked a lot Kuroko too. If you take too much care about the basketball part being realistic, you will never like Kuroko. The really good part about Kuroko is everything outside the basketball court. (even if personally I liked the matches too, even if unrealistic). Also Captain Tsubasa was a sort of Kuroko ante-litteram. But who cares about the super shots.
Kuroko's did some really good character building despite being a power fantasy, it really made me feel for each of the generation of miracles. Glad that you enjoyed both series and see what they have to offer to someone
If Slam dunk characters are in the Kuroko no basket Verse then no doubt Shohoku would be the number 1 team and obviously Rukawa would have attained Zone....
When i made the comment about dropping either into the universe i meant more of as they were, because if they are changed to adapt to that universe power system then it'd be totally different, and Rukawa would probably be on par with the generation of miracles if you compare his skill level in his universe versus their level in the Kuroko universe
Slam dunk is better. You follow akagis dream to be national champions, you follow mitsui who loves basketball to hating it, and it allows you develop a mind where you enjoy it like sakuragi. Sakuragi transformed form with hair cut is op. What about the slam dunk scene where he does the dunk and number 10 shows on his back. In slam dunk everyone develops. Hanamachi is legendary. Also kagami is more similar to rukawa. ryota miyagi is such an op point guard also. In kuroko no one really develops that level
Rukawa is much too skilled of a player to be compared to Kagami. He can shoot. dribble, and pass at an elite level. He is a all around superstar, while Kagami and Sakuragi are both classic power forwards that excel at inside scoring, defense, and rebounding
Kagami is the ace of their team. Rukawa is also the ace. Sakuragi was a noob with natural talent most of the series. If kagami wasn't good from the start they could be compared. Also rukawa could catch rebounds he was an all round player
Also Rukawa like kagami tends to be a more its all me player. You even see kagami in the first season try to do everything himself in one match, and then kuroko slaps him for lack of team work. Also both rukawa and kagami have the aggressive /none friendly or lack of social skills personality.
Knb actually got me to play basketball, I see alot of people saying they wouldn't recommend it, but surely people can tell whats real and what isnt, it's anime for crying out loud. It's a very fun show with endearing characters, and great action
KnB is a show I definitely would recommend to most people since its a fun show, and I truly think the generation of miracles and the relationships they share with each other are excellent. The spectacle of some of the techniques in the show alone is worth watching, like the double jumpshot lol. Most of these comments are praising Slam Dunk at the expense of Kuroko's but i still believe both shows have their own merits. Appreciate you for letting everyone know Kuroko's isn't trash as they want to think 😂
Omg. Its like comparing boys to men. 😂 Kuroko take inspiration from Slamdunk. So Slamdunk is like the father and you cant compare father to son. 😂 What i love about slamdunk is youre learning together with the main character. I'm not into basketball before but slamdunk makes me watch NBA and turn me into a fangirl😂. And look at those beautiful drawings of Takehiko Inoue. Look at the character design of team sannoh, they have the same hairstyle but you can distinguished them because of the uniqueness of their faces. I love his artstyle. And another thing i like about the story is Hanamichi's character development. He joined the basketball team to impress his crush but eventually fall in love with the sport to the point of sacrificing his life to win in the court. From king of foul to the king of rebound... I dont hope for another season or another volume of the manga. I wish for reboot/remake of the anime because its great as it is.😢
Great video I personally like slam dunk it doesn't have the best animation but that's abvious coming from a 90's anime but everything else is amazing and the manga is so good
I think a Slam Dunk anime with modern animation and better pacing, would be sooooo popular now. The manga however, is absolutely timeless and drawn to perfection. I think its the best way to consume the series.
Good comparison seen both and Slam Dunk is just way more exciting especially during the nationals and seeing sakuragis growth along with all his teammates.
The Nationals in Slam Dunk are honestly my favorite part of the series, and its such a shame that the anime didn't cover it. Hopefully the new Slam Dunk movie will finish out the series, and if it does well they remake the entire anime to have more modern pacing
@@bingebois Inoue confirmed that the movie will be covering the national matches. If it gains a lot of popularity maybe there could be another slam dunk season who knows.
Tried watching Kuroko but I just can't get around the absurdity of their powers. They all seem alien and using it to play sports just seems cheating really. As a basketball player and fan, the journey is far more important than the outcome. You see NBA teams win championship, but the process to get there is what really inspires. Slam Dunk is all that. They are not a powerhouse team, Sakuragi doesn't even know how to play, but the journey they took as a team is what separates them from others. And as a viewer, you see their growth and really a part of it. Slam Dunk literally made popular the sports anime genre all around the world. Until now, even with a short run as an anime. Slam Dunk still remembered and celebrated.
I love both IMO I've seen so many people hate on kuroko for being unrealistic but it's anime it's supposed to be unrealistic it's more entertaining that way.
Hating on a series because its unrealistic is just a silly way to discredit it. While it is unrealistic, Kuroko's is super fun to watch and is more of a spectacle. People can enjoy whichever show they prefer more but saying it sucks because its unrealistic is dumb.
Both animes are amazing, but as a person experienced in playing basketball and faced through the ups and downs of playing sports, SLAM DUNK is the more relatable and grounded between the two hence if you are looking for a true SPORTS story, SLAM DUNK is the way to go. And read the manga, my goodness is it really good and the art by Inoue Takehiko is amazing. Inoue is basically among the Mt. Rushmores of Mangakas. But not taking anyway from Kuroko, the charm for this show is how creative they are in tackling super power concepts in terms of basketball. Kurokos misdirection, each of the Generation of Miracles unique powers, and the concept of perfect zone. Kuroko No Basket would suit those that are into the Action Animes.
Slam Dunk is definitely the anime I recommend to basketball fans over Kuroko's, just because it is a relatable journey for anyone who has played basketball in their own life. Personally, i read the manga for Slam Dunk, and it makes me sad that they never animated the final tournament, but with the new movie supposed to cover that I'm excited! Kuroko's can also be fun for basketball fans but it is more in a way that it is so crazy that it's just awesome to see as a spectacle. Also, I think the characters were actually written pretty well in Kuroko, even though you wouldn't assume that looking from outward in.
@@bingebois Yup, really looking forward to the movie. Though I wish it was an anime season instead so that they could have more time to flush out the characters especially from the opposing teams like Toyotama and Sannoh. But we'll just have to wait and see for now.
I never love a comic or anime like I love slam dunk.. yesterday I watched fhe first slam dunk.. I never watch a movie in cinema since I have became a mother but only for slam dunk I talked to husband that I wanted to see it.. I got permission to see it and I am so happy to see all of the characters again..
I do recommend both the series because they are quite good and worth the watch. Slam Dunk might be better to read the manga instead of the anime because the anime didn't adapt the last arc, but they are both worth your time! 👍
Slam Dunk is one of my favorite sports anime mainly because it has no fictional moves involved in it. Kuroko is a decent show, but I go for sports anime that have real life applications and scenes that athletes can relate too. I've picked up basketball these last two years because of Slam Dunk and I've really enjoyed playing it. Picked up some sweet LeBron's to enhance my playing style, practice when I can with my dad (star athlete of the family), and I always looked to improve.
Its awesome to see people pick up basketball thanks to Slam Dunk. Basketball has always been one of my favorite sports to play since everyone gets to be involved no matter your skill level!
Practice with your dad is similiar when childhood of sawakita eiji from sannoh kogyo practice basket ball 1 on 1 by him dad (slam dunk) that was perfect experience
Slam dunk is the best anime i have aver seen, like sakuragi and his team had only lost once up until kainan and their previous close victories had really make me believe they would win again but nope, it hit like a truck easily my favourite episode
i will agree this time sakuragi will lose only because of sakuragi small experience unlike kagami who played years. but if sakuragi will play for years kagami will lose. its about experience bout this fight
I actually believe Hanamichi is physically superior to Kagami assuming Kagami is not in the zone we see Hanamichi without a running start get his hand over the square on the back board if we give him a running start which usually adds about 6 inches to a jump it's comes to pretty much a bare bone tie they both would be able to touch the top of the back board since they practically have the exact same build we can assume they are producing a similar amount of force the only difference is Kagami worked his entire life and has dedicated hours While Hanamichi has just gotten into the sport and is somehow matching him
I do think they are very similar as far as the physical aspect goes, and i was very interested to see how good Hanamichi would get after finding his love for basketball by the end of the series. Its good storytelling that like in real life an athlete's career can be derailed by a surprise injury and sadly that did happen to Sakuragi.
Nah none of them can touch the top of the backboard, sakuragi's max vert is 45inches according to slam dunk wiki...we can safely assume kagami have similar hops.. assuming they both got an average wingspan, they both should touch around 8'3 while standing..add 45inches to that and u get a 12ft max touch, which is just a foot away from the top of the backboard
I know this video is old but. I would like to say the jumping throwing dunk is realistic because blake griffin did it all the time. Got many of highlights doing it. I always felt his character was based on blake griffin who is a red haired mixed kid who plays forward with an insane jumping ability.
To be fair, I did put "VS" in the title so some will just see that and think I'm declaring a winner or better show/manga, but it was really appreciating both and how they tackle the subject of basketball and growth. Glad you were able to watch and enjoy it, and trust me the amount of views this video has right now are more than I ever thought it would have, I'm just happy people like you and everyone else have seen it and hopefully enjoyed it!
Just know Kuroko's sports anime is like a fantasy anime where everything has a isekai feeling whereas Slam Dunk is more relevant to past era basketball context, from a realistic point of view literally from the author's view as a basketball advocate himself
Yes, that is why the video is titled Realism vs Power Fantasy. I am also a basketball fan so I'm familiar with the inspirations for some of Inoue's ideas
I read the Slam Dunk Manga and watched the Kuroko's anime, i think that the anime enhanced KnB with the animation so I'd definitely check it out at some point.
Because of slam dunk I now play basket ball and I love it!! My fav player is Kiminobu Kogure, he’s has the kindest personality in the show😊. If you guys did not watched or read slam dunk go try it it’s awesome❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤.
Great analysis video. Albeit KnB is good, when you compare it to Slam Dunk it becomes mediocre at best. That’s how great of work Slam Dunk is. Shoutout to Takehiko Inoue for being such a great mangaka. For anyone reading this comment, also check out “Real” and “Vagabond” from the same author of Slam Dunk, Takehiko Inoue.
The Meteor Jam is something that can happen, but not purposefully done in a full speed game because of how much of random external factors need to go right, and The Zone is just players getting hot, but every player can get hot not just stars so it just is unrealistic in scale. its like takeover in 2k
Bball in Philippines made me quit the sport. Settling in US and 90's NBA made me picked up the ball. SD made me appreciate the sport. Today's NBA sucks. But KnB made me realize why i do not want to let go of my passion for sport. When my Dad passed away and didn't have final words with him, i realized basketball was one of the few things we really bonded. So i play it as many times as i can like no tomorrow.
Kuroko was Slam Dunk-like right until the episode when they introduced Midorima hitting half-court set shots/whole-court jumpers and realize the anime follows the same Shonen Jump formula no different from any other where there's a backstory with the main characters' would-be rivals who are so overpowered (because they made Kise look like a normal player who can just copy skills on the fly)... but somehow end up to be their strongest allies.
Some say it's a matter of preference. If you are accustomed to modern animes (meaning you are part of the younger generation), you will connect and enjoy KnB a lot more. But if you are part of the generation that grew up with the classics, SD will be immortalized as the greatest sports anime/manga. SD has grounded and realistic hand drawn art (manga), rough masculine men that was popular back in the 80s and 90s, simple, linear story, classic shonen progression and most of all, it will leave an impression on you for a very long time. KnB has shiny and modern animation with a lot of effects, lanky and pretty boy design that is popular nowadays, story that caters to younger audience, modern storytelling. Whilst, I like modern animes with beautiful animation like kimetsu no yaiba, jujutsu and CSM, KnB just didnt click with me. I do not find any characters likeable or relatable. The power system is also such a big turn off for me. The character designs that look like it came out of shoujo manga did not help too. Lastly, basketball with dragon ball-esque effect was the last stray for me to dislike the series.
That's interesting because I feel like the characters of KnB are actually the biggest reason why it has garnered a fanbase. They really do have some layers to a few of them, mainly being Aomine, Kise, & Kuroko. If you didn't feel I'm not gonna try and tell you you are wrong because that's your opinion. Slam Dunk brings the characters to the forefront and uses basketball as a catalyst for their growth so it will always have stronger characters than KnB which focuses so much on the spectacle.
Thanks man I appreciate that. I can't really blame anime or manga people for not being heavy into basketball or sports in general since i feel like the two communities don't crossover a lot.
I've done a video on Joe before so I might wait a while before I make on talking or comparing it to Hajime No Ippo. Its definitely something i am considering doing however
Idk, what Slam Dunk gives is a profound love and appreciation to Basketball, team work, building a good foundation and honest passion towards something and self growth on top of the thrill of learning and finding something you love. I'd say Kuroko is more just focused on the thrill of playing a sport.
While Slam Dunk is about finding your first love in basketball, I feel as though Kuroko is about reinvigorating that love for the Generation Of Miracles, and relearning basketball to depend on your teammates and let them depend on you at the same time
The only thing that threw me off in Kuroko were the BS powers (although pretty entertaining) and no sense of the basketball rules and way of play. I don’t remember from the back of my mind who was the team that was beating Kuroko’s team but they were ahead on the game with few seconds left in the last quarter and instead of running the clock out decided to shoot without looking for a foul and then kuroko’s team scores. That was so freaking bs especially when the generation of miracles winning is everything that was stupid of them
Yeah, I genuinely feel that actual basketball games themselves are the weakest aspect of the show for me. Its a dope spectacle to watch and have fun but story wise and logically it don't make no sense. The characters and the writing for their motivations tho is really good
Watched few clips of Kuroko, cant stand all the fiction. Rewatch Slam dunk anime multiple times and never get tired of it. I can say with confidence that Slam dunk is top 3 in my home country.
If u tryna watch/read a basketball anime/manga try ahiru no sora its realistic and their development takes time sure some start op but that's because they played since they were kids the mc is like 4'10 or 5ft he's all sure it might seem boring as the character designs ain't the best imo but it's a must watch they take time with development and that's why it's a great anime i prefer it over kuroko no basketball because it actually shows stuff that real basketball players use their dribble techniques their shooting form its a dope watch honestly just sad how they don't give characters dope height in the basketball anime
Ahiru No Sora is definitely on my list, I saw it when it was coming out but just haven't gotten around to it. I'm a big sports anime fans so it'll be watched sooner rather than later
Never heard about there being more before. Definitely think the series ended kinda abruptly but hope the movie could revive it even though Inoue is working on REAL now.
@@bingebois i have a feeling that this movie is a preparation for him to continue the series. Maybe he want to see if the movie will hit and if so then that's the go signal for continuation
The slam dunk manga made me love the sport of basketball. You get to learn the sport while Sakuragi is learning and it’s such an immersive experience. The art really just jumps out at you too so it’s such a fun reading experience
The art is so good and really makes those epic moments feel even better. Great Manga
True
Exactly why Kuroko isn't among my top 3 sports anime.
After a while, it becomes just vibes and just so predictable . Smth you'll watch just to chill (without giving much thought)
Still love it tho
Me too❤
Me watching Kuroko's Basketball: Cheering because of the hype and epic action.
Me watching Slam Dunk: Sit down calmly, grip my chest, try not to cry.
that very accurately and simply explains the difference!
People say this alot, but honestly there are times when I've had both reactions to Kuroko.
Not until Kuroko and Seirin got their as* kicked by Aomine in their 1st game... That sh*t was a brutal loss to them that even Kuroko cried and so devastated after taking the L
The inspiration for Aomine was Kobe Bryant. He BETTER destroy our protag. Team at least once!
Good points for me as someone who is not a basketball fan/player:
● Kuroko no Basket = storyline, animation, visuals, creativity (for tropes and other elements like each player's powers), and more advanced basketball skills
● Slam Dunk = storyline, more sport-centered, educational, character development, humor, and connection to the viewer (probably more preferred even by non-anime viewers)
Both are great and entertaining. But I like Slam Dunk better. Its memorability is engraved more to me.
That's a great, yet simple way to sum up the differences and similarities between the shows!
Will they explain the rules in slam dunk ?
@@nero3948 yes
I like both animes but Slam Dunk is more motivational and yet emotional for me
Slamdunk hits deeper that Kuroko No Basket for me, though Kuroko No Basket is way cooler of an anime
One of the reason why Basketball is so famous in the Philippines, is because of SLAMDUNK
I've had a bunch of comments and seen that same sentiment from other people from the Philippines. Its incredible that a series was able to do that and inspire so an entire nation!
The Philippines was already a basketball-crazy country. Slam Dunk made it even more so
Slam dunk makes me so fuckin emotional and intense with each page durin a match.Thats why after all these years later Slam Dunk holds up,timeless masterpiece. Kuroko is entertaining just not on the same level
The panel of Sakuragi and Rukawa high fiving is a top 5 manga panel for me! Straight chills and smiles when i see it
Slamdunk is way better. I have reread the manga many times and still giving me goosebumbs. That last game in the nationals is worth rereading
The final game in the nationals and the high five between Rukawa and Sakuragi are definitely in my top 10 anime/manga moments of all time
I stopped reading Kuroko's Basketball around volume 7, as I grew tired of how unrealistic it is.
@@RomnysGonzalez trash ass kuroko no basketcase

@@DeaaAbdullah-c1qmfs realising different opinion exist:
In the end, i understood how much i loved basketball.
damn bro, that's crazy
Youre like mitsui when he got an injury

Who needs a reboot of whole 1993 slam dunk anime with modern animation (apart from the movie that's coming out this year)
The biggest issue for me with the 93 Slam Dunk anime was pacing. 100+ episodes to not even cover the full 300 chapter manga was way too much. Hopefully if the movie is popular enough we will get that remake.
Slam Dunk is like the Berserk of Basketball manga. Kuroko is like Naruto of basketball manga.
That is an analogy.
I watched SD as a kid and multiple times in teenage years. But it hits different when I understand what a well writen story is after working as a marketer. It's impressive that the show aired almost 30 years ago and the structure is so well-built
That is the sign of a classic. If it can hold up over time and still be considered as good as it was when released.
Both of the main characters t shirt numbers are 10
Even more reason to show they are similar.
for me Slam dunk will always be my favorite basketball anime. I remember the first time I cried when Hanamichi cried lol
It is a fantastic series and can be considered a true all timer!
I love both anime but man slam dunk makes want to play with shohoku even just to cheer for them in the bench.
You feel like you are watching a documentary on the team at some points in the manga. Its pretty cool
@@bingeboisThey most likely will hold a great event to commemorate the new film
Slam dunk is a love letter for a generation of Asian kids. There are a lots of regrets in your youth year. Not everyone can be a winner, the biggest would be not trying. I’m 32 now but every time I watch Slam Dunk when Mutchi kneel in front of couch, eyes full of tears and says the famous: “I want to play basketball.” Just drains me. I can’t wait to watch the new movie!!!
Definitely curious about the new movie, they haven't promoted it much so its got me a little skeptical
XD.. Nice content , you earned another subscriber here
Well said. Everyone can have their opinions as long as you aren't toxic about it.
Kuroko basketball is just the best in my opinion just because of how fun it is I literally want it to be unrealistic I like seeing crAzy speed never missing shots and whatever it is what it is it’s just like that
Its definitely a taste thing. Kuroko's is just extremely fun and i understand why people would like it better for that reason
💪
Slam dunk was the OG anime.
You should check that out. Unlike KNB where the protagonist is already a caliber player...in slam dunk. The protagonist started from zero knowledge about basket ball.. you know, like a zero-to-hero kind of story
@@denciolombos2510 true but being so new to basketball, Hanamichi still makes errors until the endgame
Shohoku's players are all based on early 90s NBA players, Rukawa=Jordan, Sakuragi=Rodman, Miyagi=Bogues, Akagi=Ewing, Mitsui=Hornacek
Ive been playing basketball for 10 years
Slam dunk and Kuroko No basket isn't even comparable to me.
The way slam dunk shows progression of Sakuragi as a player, as-well as a person is spot on and some of the best writing i've seen in any media, i cant tell you how many times ive read all 276 chapters of it. (dont watch the anime read the manga)
Kuroko No Basket is painful for me to watch, its painfully unrealistic and to me theres nothing relating to progression as a player, its just they have a perfected skill, watch them dominate and it's boring.
This could be the result of just the length of the stories, the length of the stories aren't really comparable, and if they were the same length i'm not sure if this would be a difference, but it is what it is.
lol, agree with read the manga don't watch anime for Slam Dunk
Slam Dunk is simply a masterpiece. The story, the pacing, the art itself, it's incomparable to anything else
Both series are excellent and their is nothing wrong with having a favorite as long as you don't hate on the other. 👍
You're a really underrated youtuber keep up the great work🔥🔥
Really appreciate your comment! The nice things people like you say motivate us to keep grinding and make more and better content!
Man I love Slam Dunk
It is the second best sports manga I've ever read, and one of the best completed manga in existence imo
Alex on the other hand, well, she didn't impact as much as the 2 women(Riko and Momoi) as she is known playing in WNBA and Kagami's sensei when he was in US
The Manga is the only thing that matters! The pace of the anime is not the creator's fault
Wdym girls representation. Why would women be in a mens basketball league
Both are great! If you have time you can watch both but, if you want something more interesting it's the slamdunk.
Glad you can enjoy both unlike alot of people in the comments lol. Appreciate your comment!
for me, Slam Dunk isn't just about basketball, but more about the bittersweet of highschool year. hence the ending is perfect.
I really hope they make more basketball animes
Sports anime have been becoming way more popular so I definitely can see it happening!

Those are two of my favorite sports manga Ashwell! Ippo used to be top 2 but after I read Ashito No Joe my new top two are Slam Dunk and Joe. The art in Slam Dunk is so good and I still consider the high five between Sakuragi and Rukawa one of the best manga panels of all time
Watched both but I prefer SD 🏀♥️
It was very inspiring ✨ watching how Sakuragi leveled up from picking fights with delinquents and facing a potential bad future to an aspiring basketball player who gets to compete and hang out with the coolest and most ambitious athletes like Maki and Sendoh
It just shows to young kids especially how making a right choice can completely change the outcome of your life...
If you wanted someone to find a love of the game or just understand basketball better, Slam Dunk is the way to go
@@bingebois this is the best summary I've seen of it, wanna show basketball is cool? Kuroko. Want to love basketball? Slam dunk
If I want to read superpower basketball I will watch buzzer beater.
@@sakuragi5160 I honestly like slam dunk more because it was a part of my childhood
I prefer slam dunk more! I simply love it and it is my most fav anime along with one piece. I would give it a 10/10!
I'm also a very big One Piece fan! Great animes/mangas
I wish for reboot/remake of the anime because its great as it is.😢
word
This video is awesome man! Keep grinding, I love it!
Appreciate it
Comparing Sakuragi to Kuroko is like comparing A meteor to a pebble
I didn't compare him to Kuroko i compared him to Kagami 😃
sybau
Slam Dunk is in another level …. The GOAT of Sports Mangas
Pov : you only like anime that have the best animation
@@foxinaround1220 LOL you're talking to a ghost stories fan so no.
just because its an anime doesnt mean it has to be unrealistic there's alot of realistic animes out there you should go check them out :>
Sports anime are different I prefer them with no super powers.
If I want to read superpower basketball I will watch buzzer beater.
You can be into both even if you prefer one genre or another.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm very excited to!
I grew up reading Slam Dunk,I haven’t experienced another sports series like it until Haikyuu
SlamDunk for me ! One of the best manga/anime sports that ever existed !
That is an absolute fact!
Idk I haven’t watched them both
But i really think slam dunk will be better
I do recommend both the series because they are quite good and worth the watch. Slam Dunk might be better to read the manga instead of the anime because the anime didn't adapt the last arc, but they are both worth your time! 👍
@@bingebois thank you, I will surely check it out!
Yup slam dunk is better in my opinion.
I love Slam dunk. I like it more because I find the characters more likable and relatable, the story is engaging as compared to KNB.
I respect your opinion
It would be interesting to see where they would be if they had equal time playinf basketball
Not a fan of KnB not because of how unrealistic it was, but I just don't find the characters likeable.
Every one has their opinion and I respect you for willing vocalizing yours
Sakuragi entered the zone when he fought ryonan
Not to mention sakuragi post up with a fat 7 footer he call meatball..even when being severely outsized
@@erijak2935 broo him calling that 210cm guy a meatball had me dead
Well of course Hanamichi is physically superior. He's a GENIUS ;) ;)
I know this video is old but. I would like to say the jumping throwing dunk is realistic because blake griffin did it all the time. Got many of highlights doing it. I always felt his character was based on blake griffin who is a red haired mixed kid who plays forward with an insane jumping ability.
I never watched slam dunk but I read the manga when I was younger, missed out on some things that the anime added.
I also have not watched all of the anime. Sadly it doesn't cover the last portion of the manga so it added things, and took some away.
This video should have a lot more likes compared to views, looks like fanboys came here to have you say one is better than the other
To be fair, I did put "VS" in the title so some will just see that and think I'm declaring a winner or better show/manga, but it was really appreciating both and how they tackle the subject of basketball and growth. Glad you were able to watch and enjoy it, and trust me the amount of views this video has right now are more than I ever thought it would have, I'm just happy people like you and everyone else have seen it and hopefully enjoyed it!
@@bingebois yea understandable. I thought it was a really good comparison and appreciate the effort, might be sharing this vid around!
Haikyu and Slam Dunk is the best example of realism.
Its in my top 3 manga list for sure
Deservedly so
Just know Kuroko's sports anime is like a fantasy anime where everything has a isekai feeling whereas Slam Dunk is more relevant to past era basketball context, from a realistic point of view literally from the author's view as a basketball advocate himself
Yes, that is why the video is titled Realism vs Power Fantasy. I am also a basketball fan so I'm familiar with the inspirations for some of Inoue's ideas
i read both mangas and didn't watch both animes
kuroko no basket is good, slam dunk is a masterpiece
I read the Slam Dunk Manga and watched the Kuroko's anime, i think that the anime enhanced KnB with the animation so I'd definitely check it out at some point.
Because of slam dunk I now play basket ball and I love it!! My fav player is Kiminobu Kogure, he’s has the kindest personality in the show😊. If you guys did not watched or read slam dunk go try it it’s awesome❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤.
“My shooting range is the whole court”
This tops any sports anime 😂
Alright those who don’t know I’ll tell you what zone is…Zone is not an ability it’s just your state of mind which unlocks your true 100%
Not a thing in real life, but i respect your attempt to rationalize it
Great analysis video.
Vagabond is personally on my To Read list, and I've heard great things about Real. Wayyyy too many good mangas tho.
I will say that zone is a thing and the meteor jam thing is a real thing too
The Meteor Jam is something that can happen, but not purposefully done in a full speed game because of how much of random external factors need to go right, and The Zone is just players getting hot, but every player can get hot not just stars so it just is unrealistic in scale. its like takeover in 2k
@@bingebois oh yeah for sure when I meant meteor jam was realistic it’s more like in a dunk contest or for fun not in game
Slam dunk is the best but i love kuroko no basket too
Always great to show appreciation for both
Slam Dunk it's Masterpiece
Takehiko inoue have Hand from heaven & Jenius
Slam Dunk is absoluetly amazing
Finally... A TH-cam video about Slam Dunk from someone who knows basketball.
Thanks man I appreciate that. I can't really blame anime or manga people for not being heavy into basketball or sports in general since i feel like the two communities don't crossover a lot.
Do Ashita no Joe and Hajime no Ippo next
I've done a video on Joe before so I might wait a while before I make on talking or comparing it to Hajime No Ippo. Its definitely something i am considering doing however
Idk, what Slam Dunk gives is a profound love and appreciation to Basketball, team work, building a good foundation and honest passion towards something and self growth on top of the thrill of learning and finding something you love. I'd say Kuroko is more just focused on the thrill of playing a sport.
While Slam Dunk is about finding your first love in basketball, I feel as though Kuroko is about reinvigorating that love for the Generation Of Miracles, and relearning basketball to depend on your teammates and let them depend on you at the same time
Seirin is the 2011 Maverick’s
I can see the vision, not sure anyone on Seirin matches Dirk game tho.
I liked more the realism, both anime's are great but i like more Slam Dunk.
Everyone has theiir preferences. So its fair to prefer Slam Dunk
The characters and the writing for their motivations tho is really good
When talking about Street Fight Hanamichi Sakuragi can solo all the Generation of Miracles😆
hi love your video , can make sport amine overdrive vs Yowamushi Pedal both are road bike anime
I haven't watched Yowamushi Pedal yet, I've heard it is really good, but that sounds like something I would definitely be interested in making!
Watched few clips of Kuroko, cant stand all the fiction. Rewatch Slam dunk anime multiple times and never get tired of it. I can say with confidence that Slam dunk is top 3 in my home country.
Everyone has their own opinions, sometimes the over the top action isn't for everyone and thats okay.
Kuroko is fun, Slam Dunk is one of the best manga/animes ever made.
Both statements can be considered true.
i feel like i am more connected to slam dunk then kuroko's basketball
10:20 don’t forget about Blue lock
AKASHI HAVE EYE POWER LIKE SHARINGAN
He do be having a eye power
Touch and captain tsubasa are also very very good sport anime
I've heard of Captain Tsubasa but haven't watched it and I'm not familiar with touch so I'll check it out
Slam Dunk characters were all based on NBA players from back then. Hanamichi Sakuragi was based on Dennis Rodman
Unfortunately we never get a chance to watch/read Slam Dunk "Winter Tournament" arc...
