I recently did a prepoo with a mix of coconut oil, grapeseed oil, olive oil, and Camille Rose leave-in conditioner. Then, I put on a heating cap for 30 minutes, shampooed with a clarifying shampoo, and deep-conditioned for an hour with a heating cap. I liked how soft my hair felt after but idk. I have 4c, low porosity hair, so it made my hair easier to detangle prior to shampooing

My fine, low porosity hair loves coconut oil as a prepoo! I prepoo overnight and it's so easy to get the shed hair out before I shampoo, my hair doesn't get tangled as much while shampooing and I feel it does protect my hair from harsh shampoos. The type of shampoo I use depends on how my hair feels on wash day. Sometimes I feel like I have more buildup or my hair seems dirtier for some reason, so I might use a more cleansing shampoo. I totally agree that you should do what's best for your hair. I evaluated every step of my wash day to determine if each step is beneficial. Great video! I love that you do so much testing and research!

I think the choice of oils matter a lot. you need to find an oil that your hair likes and can penetrate your hair as well. the point of oil pre poo is to protect and nourish your hair. if there still oil residue, it just means your shampoo didnt remove well the oil. Understand shampoo contains oils and other emollients as well. So some shampoo won't remove very well oils and also will put products back on your hair. All type of hair low po or not may suffer from hydral fatigue. I think everyone should do oil prepoo at least once a month... Also the oils you used are oils that are supposed to stay on top of your hair. you need penetrating oils such as coconut oil, babassu oil, palm oil, sunflower oil etc... If coconut oil doesnt suit you, change. Also the amount of oil is important, if you put too much oil, that can be an issue as well. Choose the right oil, trial and error, do not try multiple oils, and also apply a little bit of oils.
Our hair is supposed to have oils (sebum)that protects that hair ... but...
Aloe vera gel will create a barrier on your hair, which is not a prepoo. Conditioner will soften your hair which is not a prepoo.
I think you should may be try sunflower oil and apply just a little bit.
With prepoo you have to use it many time to see the results on your hair. Oil prepoo is not a quick fix or results, your hair needs to get used to .
A steamer won't help, oil needs time to penetrate especially if you have thick hair like you...let the oil sit for 8 hours at least, do it for a month than observe your hair...
By the way oil must be apply on dry hair because oil and water dont mixx at aleo
    Take care and great vids

Excellent video! I 100% agree - prepoo for my low to normal porosity hair is unnecessary. I tend to co wash more regularly and re style more regularly, while shampooing at once a week with a deep conditioner. Less problems with detangling - no issues with hygral fatigue.

I tried to pre poo once. Never again ! When I went to wash the oil out, water literally bounced off my hair! Lmao I was laughing (in amazement of how low porosity my hair is), but mad as hell because my hair couldn't absorb water because the oil blocked it. I haven't tried pre-poo with a conditioner, but I honestly don't see the big deal. I think the key is to find a great shampoo that doesn't dry out your hair. I detangle my hair with Kinky Curly's Knot Today then go in with my DC. Pre-poo'n is overrated. Lol 😝 I don't have a hard time detangling my hair. Idk if it's because I have a loser texture or what.

This makes a LOT of sense. I am going to try this emphasis on water and taking the time with it. MY hair recently became low porosity. I used to be able to use product but now it just dulls my hair and makes it look worse, flat and with no wave. Very strange. Even a hair stylist said she felt a coating on my hair. If I used a strong shampoo to eliminate the build up yes I would get some shine and curls but my hair still seemed dry. I am going to try the lighter cleanser and more water and light regular conditioning. Thank you.

A conditioner isnt really a pre poo because it has water in it which will swell the hair cuticle, & the whole point of a prepoo is to reinforce hair against hydral fatigue...Oil is. I dont really have to use a prepoo anymore since I switched the type of shampoo I used . But I do anyway, & I'm low porosity & it works fine for me. But as always we have to do whats best for us. Yes you’re right, I only added conditioner because I have noticed that a lot of ppl use conditioner as a pre poo as well on TH-cam so I wanted to include all options! But I def agree that oil is the best to prevent hygral fatigue but some ppl use a prepoo to help make the wash process easier (conditioner for detangling) and not necessarily to prevent hygral fatigue. And yes my hair is extremely low Porosity 😅😅 I think that’s why I am so passionate about low poo hair 😆

I bag my hair and cover with a towel for a few hours, unwrap and let it air dry. I haven’t fine tuned this process but have found it keeps my hair moisturized for several days. I’m so thankful to God for this. It’s only taken me 7 years and a greater understanding of low porosity vs curl type to successfully moisturize my hair.

Hey doll, I apply giovanni 50/50 conditioner to my warm damp hair in sections and sometimes only put literally a few drops of oil on the ends. I let it sit in my hair maybe 20 minutes prior to shampooing. Mostly use this method for removing shed hair and sectioning purposes I never leave it in for a long period of time like I have seen others do. I also clarify often with mild cleansers. For me if I use oil and shampoo with a gentle cleanser I know to expect dull hair that doesn't absorb anything when its time to moisturize. Thanks for sharing.

Hey!! I noticed you you didn’t really drench your hair with water when prepooing. I found that prepooing is just a detangling last minute moisture replenisher before stripping hair. Coating your hair with water (in your case making sure it’s beyond damp) and then add the oil - olive oil, aloe vera, or sweet almond oil). Coconut oil is HORRIBLE for hair. It coats the strands. Most stylists will tell you to avoid it because it sits on top of the skin and hair follicles. If you go to a professional they’ll tell you how it truly effects your hair especially when you manipulate it in a different style. Also working in smaller sections to detangle may help too. Mielle organics has a great pre poo product you should try it!

Why you prepoo is important. I don’t do it to prevent shampoo from drying out my hair like you. I do it because it’s the only time in my routine that I detangle my hair. And I wash in twists to prevent shrinkage and tangles. The cleaner it gets, the more it shrinks.
Most people detangle with conditioner after shampooing, which I can’t do because of the shrinkage. So many consider prepoo to be an ‘extra’ step, however, for me, it’s actually necessary.

I never have a need to pre-poo since I always have oil on my hair in some form. I have a twa, and every morning I add a bit of warm water to my hair and scalp, massage until absorbed, then add a quarter-amount of my ayurvedic oil mixture with a few drips of mint, tea tree, and rosemary oil to it.
Since I do this every morning, I always have oils on my hair and scalp whenever I go to shower. And most of the time, I water-only wash my hair every few days, and only wash my hair with shampoo once every week-and-a-half to two weeks. And by then, I have a bit of sebum build up (since I also have a high sebum production) so it’s not necessary.

My hair is always so tangled when I get in the shower that’s the first thing I do is I put conditioner and then comb with my fingers shampoo after I’ve combed the conditioner through and then I apply shampoo and wash my hair one time very good and then proceed with deep condition. My hair is so fine and fragile but it takes nothing for it to break so I find this method works pretty good for me. I tend to use volumizing shampoo and conditioner because my hair is fine and they’re not as moisturizing as other more moisturizing shampoo and conditioners are but I get the moisture in at the recondition. One thing I have learned from you here or on another video is that to go straight from the wash to the deep condition and not do a rinse through condition first so that I can allow the condition to penetrate better thank you.

Hi Lydia, did you ever prepoo with a deep conditioner? I think that works better than oils, less concentrated. I did it once (I just recently heard of it) with macademia hair food from garnier fructis and it worked well (on dry hair, I added a little bit water on a few strands to release knots) I left it for I think 2 hours or a little bit longer, then washed (petal fresh volumizing shampoo), styled (alikay naturals lemongrass leave inand aloe berry styling gel) and my hair was moisturized without making it too heavy or greasy, or dried out from washing. This worked well. I am still learning since starting the curly girl method one and a half year ago

Hey Iyda. I find that if I pre poo with oil added to a conditioner, it helps. What I also do is put the shampoo on the scalp without rinsing the conditioner out. I then bring the shampoo down the length of my hair strands. Usually my hair is then ready for the deep conditioner. Thanks for this video.

Elizabeth Moore I forgot to add that in the video! I also only concentrate the shampoo on my scalp and let the water rinse it down the rest of my hair strands! I don’t think I have ever tried that conditioner oil mix, that actually sounds pretty good 😄

If you’re just putting a conditioner on your hair just to detangle first and then you go in with a shampoo or cowash product , is that ok? & does that still count as pre-pooing ? Or is it only prepooing if it’s left on the hair for an extended period of time ?

I believe I commented on this before and if you're still here, I would like to let you know that I'm so glad that you did made that video even when I thought pre poo would be beneficial. Now, since my hair is still the same, I feel like pre poo doesn't really help my hair that much. I could most likely get away with using moisturizing shampoo while I clarify maybe once a month or so to minimize build up. I try one of the moisturizing shampoo and rinse out moisturizing conditioner recently and my hair don't feel dry the next day. Got me thinking...hmmm is pre poo really that necessarily? Can it actually cause more harm than good? I, too, have low porosity hair but I also have fine hair strands so I definitely need to be careful with weighing down my hair strands even though they said pre poo is definitely beneficial for fine hair. Idk I felt like protein treatment did most of that to minimize breakage in fine hair strands. Plus, I feel like doing all of that cause my hair to loose me hair, maybe. 🤷🏿‍♀️ Lol, it a journey for sure. Again, thank you as not many share this perspective.

Number one everybody cannot leave all of these conditioners, oils or treatments on their hair overnight. You have to listen to your hair as far as how much time you need to leave these treatments on. Also, in place of coconut oil you can use you organic sunflower oil or babassu oil. These oils give you the same benefits minus the issues of coconut oil for those who cannot use it for whatever reason.

I PrePoo with warm water and a lil bit of conditioner.
I spray warm water on my hair and finger detangle my hair. If I come across a knot I'll add a lil conditioner to it and work it loose. If it's too tight, I'll clip the knot off. But the majority of the time it'll work it's way loose. Very seldom do I have to clip it off. 🤞🏽

If I do pre-poo, I use homemade aloe vera/flax gel or a cheap conditioner mixed with an Ayurvedic powder. For shorter wash days, I find it easier to use a shampoo that contains argan, amla or monoi oil and a deep conditioner like Miche , Obia babassu, CRN coconut water, etc. My low porosity hair doesn't really tolerate coconut oil except Tropical Traditions.
