  • Video diary of my Tandberg TCD310. I won this unexpectedly for a low price and its in need of a lot of work. I was interested in working on a machine with 3 motors but did not want to spend much money. My first mistake was not researching enough before working on it as I found plenty on the internet, however it adds to the fun! Music from TH-cam library Please note that working on mains equipment is dangerous.

    This was norwegean High End back then ? These long cap and resistor leads are not very PRO. If I would deliver such work as a test board my trainee teacher would throw it back at me back then...
    But I have this piece too, I got it from my father when he passed by and it is thum bulky piece.

      Yes I must admit its a bit untidy. Sometimes resistors are mounted high to aid cooling. opinion is very divided on these decks, some love, some hate.

      I have several Leak stereo-30 amps, & in the sm for those, it explicitly says " for ease of servicing we have not crimped our component leads" or something like that.
      but yeah, they looked a bit long.

    My first deck! I bought it with the first year scholarship I got from my university.
    It gave 25 years of loyal service before it stopped playing. It was a superb sounding deck for that era.
    I replaced it in 1997 with a Pioneer CT830S, which is slightly better sonically but has also just packed up, but can be repaired.

    The TCD 310 was aimed at the professional market. If it wasn't being used in supermarkets or language laboratories they were in private hands. The signal to noise ratio would not compare with digital though its pitch stability and the sound of open consonance makes them quite a unique listening experience. When I had my first one there were such things as Tandberg service agents , which you really do need if things start to go wrong.

    HI Darren, Could you give me a hand? I bought one of this model...it worked, the only problem was play, it started but then stopped. the counter would not rotate and i thought i would be without the belt and so the problem, i opened it and really missing the counter belt, but after i opened it it didn't turn on anymore. he didn't turn on the lights, what works now is the little exhaust fan inside him. would know how to inform what could have happened, please.

      As the motor is turning, you have power to the transformer. The plug in PCB's have a habit of coming out and the connectors not locating correctly on motherboard, caught me out a few times. The switches need a good clean as intermittent. Lastly check fuse on regulated power supply as that does not protect motor so if failed would remove power to everything else. Daz.

    I've seen a few of these for sale over the past year; always wondered if the hassle would be worth it?
    Assembly is one thing, and indeed repair is quite another Daz, as you well know. One fix after another: one fix can be quick and simple, and others can take us forever; the forever bit is knowing - what the hell is making it do this!!!! LOL
    Love your videos, no camera zooming in and out inducing a coma.

      I think I had a really bad one. But I still think the grease will be bad and the switches do seem to oxidise. I was more interested in the mechanism to be honest on this machine as I thought be more reliable, maybe not? A friend said they often tangled tape in the day. Daz

      Thanks for subscribing Mike. I hope you enjoy part 2 & 3 coming in the next few days. A good selection of amps there. Hacker and Roberts very popular collectors radios now. I seem to like revisiting what I remember in my youth.

    Goodness, this takes me back. I bought my TCD310 in 1974 when I was an 18 year old student. I even have a photo of me with it and the matching Tandberg TA300 amplifier from the time. I still have the amplifier, but not the cassette deck. I don't think that your pause button is faulty. If memory serves me correctly, the pause button will only operate if you are already in play or record mode. The deck may need a cassette in it in order for you to go into play or record mode. The TCD310 was definitely ahead of its time.

      Yes a mostly electrical deck and very much different. No microprocessors in sight!

    These early Tandberg decks used tantalum capacitors that failed on a regular basis. These decks were difficult to troubleshoot because the circuit boards were plug in and nested so tight they were impossible to check any voltages etc. Also because the boards were packed so tight there was heat buildup that caused more of the tantalum caps to fail . When they were working they sounded great.

      Those plug in PCB's with silver connectors are a great source of unreliability as are the many switches. I have noted that it runs warm despite the large aluminium panels. The test recording was good using the deck to record.

    I just got one of these for free, was told the belts are damaged. Any tips ?

    • @darrencoe5795
      @darrencoe5795  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As its a dual capstan, the belt must be in good condition to avoid tape damage. Switches and Hard grease was my main issues. Daz

    Hello , are there fuses in it , one of the vu meters don't work , regards, Martin.

    • @darrencoe5795
      @darrencoe5795  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there are protective fuses. Vu meters, assuming both channels working, are more likely to mechanical issues I've found. Often the bearing tightens with age. Very delicate job to adjust . Daz.

    I've just learnt more about cassette players in 20 mins than I knew before. Are those Tants on the two stacked boards? Came here on Simon's recommendation. Cheers - Andrew

      @@darrencoe5795 I did thanks. I usually work on valve equipment so very interesting to see something like a cassette deck. One of my favourite things in the 70s was unwinding 30 feet of mashed tape from the capstan :)

      @@Andrewausfa Yeah I was glad to have a machine with autostop on the take up spool in the 80's. So many machines had the tape tightness detector and a front spool stall wasn't detected until you heard it! I had to learn valve stuff from scratch. A book from the RSGB a few years ago helped that. I have some valve pye stuff for future videos. I also have a pye video camera to look at.

      @@darrencoe5795 I like Pye stuff! Local manufacturer or was. I'm 'just' up the A14 from you actually, just north of Cambridge. I'm entirely self-taught with help from the guys on the Vintage Radio forum initially on valve stuff. I've been watching your Murphy A46 videos, good fun and a lovely set.

    I have one of these too. Have to fix loud distorted channel. At the very least will do a complete recap. From 1974 or 1975, those caps are toast. Something this old scares me. My most challenging basket case. I had a TCD-3014. I should have never sold it. Once in a lifetime mistake. So I want restore this 310 of mine. The transport is done on mine. Need to deal with the electronics and meter lamp. I am in no hurry. It is for this to bigger than me really fast. I have the service documentation and parts list. So a labor of love and respect.

    • @darrencoe5795
      @darrencoe5795  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure you have upset bias caused by bad capacitors. My problems were caused by bad switches mostly. I understand as we often sell something and later wish we had not. But we can't keep everything. Good luck with the restoration. Daz
