    Hi DrCassette,,
    I have a TCD-310 I purchased new back in the late 70's that has very little usage. I'm an LP person
    so the unit wasn't used much. Maybe 10 years ago it began to take longer to snap forward on play but
    then it finally stop moving forward to snap into play mode. Fast forward and rewind seem to work fine and
    the meters light up and work. The unit is in very nice shape and I have the feet and cover. What if I just replace those two capacitor
    that you mentioned. Maybe I can get away with not doing the ball bearing lube. The unit has been kept in the dry cool place
    here in California. Can you tell me what Caps I would need and how can I find them to purchase. It's a beautiful deck.
    I would only mostly being using it to listen to per-recorded cassette tapes. Tara

    Very nice job what you did there :) This Tandberg deck is built like a tank, I really like the three motor drive. It reminds me of the Revox B215, which has a four motor transport, and everything is DD. The only downside (of the Tandberg) is that is only a two head deck...

      AttilaSVK Two head machines have their own advantages and disadvantages. Not every high-end cassette decks must be three heads.

      There are other Tandberg models with 3 heads. This was the entry into the line 2 heads.

    That is one nice tape deck.
    Usually when I see square belts in a tape deck, no matter if they are good or bad, I replace them with round ones due to longer life.

    I found one like that in a flea market for 10 euros, tinkered with it a little bit, and then I sold it of ebay with a good profit, it went for 50 euros or so.

    Quite a nice sounding deck I recall. Because of the three motors and large capstan fly wheel, it had very low wow and flutter. This arrangement was more like a reel to reel deck. The only down side was it used a very cheap record/playback head which was quite soft and did not ware well. I loved Tandbergs reel to reel decks. Some has a separate bias head which gave amazing frequency response, even at low speeds.

    I have a number of language lab decks that used that chassis. In fact I suspect it was developed for consumer/hifi use from their classroom recorders. It's extremely well-made and reliable. The only problems I have had are the usual grease on the ballbearings, and dirty relay contacts resulting in intermittent sound or interference. One day I will record a video of one of them. The mech is identical, electronics less so.

    I made the mistake of removing the little "plate" which holds the supply-side pinch roller, and now I need to screw it on again, perfectly lining up the supply-side pinch roller with the take-up pinch roller. Any advice for this?

    Hi Doc; I just bought my first TD310, my 310 run rewind and forward but don't engage on playback, the solenoid is fine I have checked, after watching your clip I fined that about the capacitor on the switchboard, can you please give me the specification of that capacitor or even any other capacitors you mean is necessary to change on this machine. Thanks for such helpful clips.

      All Roederstein (ROE) branded capacitors in the red plastic cans should be replaced.

    I have this deck and a couple other tanberg but it's very hard to get parts for them.
    Most technicians will not work on them anymore.
    I have the model do you have there plus I have 2others.
    They play fine but I want to put new belts on in anyway.
    Do you think that's a good idea or should I just leave them the way they are

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  ปีที่แล้ว

      Never touch a running system... if the original belts are fine, leave them in there. It is very difficult these days to find good quality belts, oftentimes new belts will result in more wow&flutter.

    Doctor, i have an ER situation here. I told you i had an old ADS cassette deck that i rarely use. Well i wanted to use it this afternoon after at least 4 or 5 years of inactivity but when i pressed play only the left motor was turning the tape while the right motor did not turn. As a result the tape deck automatically shuts off after 2 seconds because The other motor is not reeling in The tape. How can i Get it to work again And why would it stop working if it is hardly ever used? The model is The C3. Thx doc

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like bad rubber components, either a bad belt or a bad idler wheel or maybe even both. Letting a cassette deck sit for so long is not a good idea.

    • @jogmas12
      @jogmas12 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DrCassette thank you for your reply. Fyi i am fairly good at taking things apart but putting them together again, well, thats a different story And The smaller The mechanism The worse it is. But i will give it a shot.

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can try to find the service manual for your cassette deck, it may be available online. It will contain drawings and instructions on how everything is supposed to go together.

    • @jogmas12
      @jogmas12 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DrCassette well doc, i am happy to report The repair for The ADS(Braun ) C3 cassette deck was a success. However i had use a makeshift substitute for an actual belt with a durable rubber band. It still did The trick as a temporary fix because rubber bands dont usually last very long. But since The repair was easy i said why not till i get a more applicable part for it. I Just opened The under side And there was The broken belt. There aré two other belts; a smaller one which Also easily reach able And a bigger one, not so easily reach able. I dread The bigger one breaking.

    • @EclectikTronik
      @EclectikTronik 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 330 is different, it is much more sophisticated control-wise than the 310, and has logic gates. If its the circuit I am thinking of, those ICs can fail, causing odd symptoms.

    Great video! I’m working on a 310 Mk II, and it works pretty well mechanically (I, too had to remove old grease and re-lubricate). Unfortunately it runs a bit slow. Is there any way to adjust the speed?

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I remember correctly, this uses a synchronous AC motor. You can not adjust the speed of these motors as it is determined by the incoming mains frequency.

    • @golfchance
      @golfchance 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. That explains why I can’t find an adjustment. Oh well. If my math is correct, it’s only about 1% slow, which isn’t too bad.

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ignacio Medina
      It's nothing special, you just want to make sure it's synthetic grease, chemically neutral and doesn't go sticky and hard.

  • @Stegeln
    @Stegeln 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great vid! Me, I seem to have a problem with the take-up spindle. I press play, and for about half a second the supply spindle starts turning, and the pinch rollers connect to the tape and start turning, too, BUT the take-up spindle remains in place. Any idea what the problem might be, and how I should go about fixing it?

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The spindles are direct drive, so check the take-up spindle's motor and the associated electronics. The service manual is quite helpful.

    • @Stegeln
      @Stegeln 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good to know, thank you! Just had a look at the manual, but I'm afraid my skillset just isn't there. Can't figure out HOW I'm supposed to check the take-up spindle's motor, and/or where its electronic components are located. :-(

    • @Stegeln
      @Stegeln 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually figured it out already!
      My problem was due to the "cassette arm" having been ever so slightly bent out of shape. It no longer connected to microswitch MS4 (see the manual), which seems to be the one triggering the motor of the take-up spindle. Fixed that, and voilà, now it plays, rewinds and fast forwards as the Tandberg gods intended.
      It still sounds like shit due to what MIGHT be shitty pinch rollers, but that's a seperate problem.

    Just a question...what lube(grease) do you use on plastic parts...? I hear some petroleum based lithium grease is not good on plastic parts...nice machine...I was thinking of buying one...for around 35$ USA....shipping included.

      For this repair I used some random synthetic grease from a home improvement store. I guess only time will tell whether or not it was a good choice. In more recent repairs I have used lithium grease. Never heard of it being bad for plastic.

    Great machine. I have a TCD330 and I love this thing! Just a small question, there is significant humm on the audio, getting louder when the volume goes up, and is in the headphone circuit too.. Is that easily solvable you think?

    • @DrCassette

    The only thing I see about this tape deck that might make it worth all this trouble, is the fact that it is a 3 motor device. That's a lot of work for a 2 head cassette deck, unless you were just going to set it on a shelf to display.

    Does this thing use ac motor? I have some soviet decks and they are not early. One is from 1987 and the other one is from 1990. They use ac motor too. Thats weird. Actually type of motor they used in these was meant for reel to reel tape recorders. But the motor runs very stabile

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this Tandberg too uses an AC motor. Back in the 70s that was not unusual.
