    this is important not just for older skaters. but if you haven't skated in a long time and are getting back into the sport this is crucial!

    I thought it was weird for me to skate alone but after watching your videos, especially at my age. It doesn't seem so weird.

      If i had to wait for someone else to skate with i would never get out. As a self employed father of four my time is extremely limited. I have to be ready to skate at a moments notice and take any chance i can get. I miss skating with good friends but its just so hard to coordinate.

    • @c.c.manbattleborn8951
      @c.c.manbattleborn8951 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Im not self employed but I do understand what you mean by fitting in a session at a moment's notice. It's tough these days. But im nowhere near ready to give up tearing up some shoes and feeling those 7 layers of maple under my feet keep skating my friend!!!

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I know there's a slight difference between like 18 and all energetic and 24 being slightly less so, however you should work on stamina if you get tired early when 24. I'm 35 and can still (thankfully) go for hours pretty much! I haven't ever really stopped doing sports, so I guess that's why. But all I'm saying is that it's probably not age related... yet.

    At 40 got a new set up today looking forward to progressing well over next 3 to 6 months. Few nose slides and frontside tail slides and lip tricks on the mallow mini ramp for cpl months. I'm going in search of a decent ledge to wax up and assault over next cpl weeks..Skating is a sport anyone can do I was frontside flipping 14 stairs years ago but can't see myself doing that again. All creative Sooooo much different terrain to attack Always Remember to skate for Fun first and foremost just look at Steve Caballero still shedding!!!. Eat well sleep 8hrs stay away from weed it'll slow down your progression as you get older. My daughter is now into skateboarding and look forward to skating together, no other sport like skating different styles and preferences etc etc..40 is the new 30 and so on just look after yourself and your going to kill it.!!! Respect To ALL who skateboard from the youngsters to the OG's like me. Peace y'all.!!! Skate on and on and on. 👍👍👍👍👍

      @@donc7664 I'm currently 36, been skating with my son now for about 1.5 months...
      Some dude at the laundromat gave us his sons old board randomly, so we skated that at first...
      We each have our own boards now, and just had our first session at the skatepark today, got back about half an hour ago...
      Normally, we skate school asphalt, but had an absolute blast at the park...
      I've got an old knee injury from a trampoline from when I was in my early 20's, was bothering me this morning, still skated today for a total of 3 sessions this weekend, a record for my reentry into skating...
      I too am back after a 20 year break, I can still Ollie and manual pretty alright, but definitely want to expand my list of tricks...
      Kinda worried about my knee, but that didn't stop me from having a great time...
      If you need to lose a few lbs. or something, get a bicycle, but if you want to at all, definitely keep skating dude...
      It came back into my life at a time when I really needed it to, it's been great to be skating again

    It's going to be tough to do it but I just want to get out and skate, take the warm up time more slowly and not get too frustrated when I'm not able to skate right way. I really miss the days of skating as hard as I could and going fast and slamming really hard but trying it again until I got it. At the same time though I know there can still be a lot of fun times ahead I just need to get out there and keep skating. I'm living in Utah and it hasn't snowed and stuck yet, but skating in the cold is tough snow or not.

      It's been super crappy here. Wettest November on record. The last week has technically been sunny but we have had a permanent low fog that has kept the ground wet all week. I have also been working too much to skate often. I don't like skating in the cold either. It's way easier to get hurt. Long johns, gloves and four layers on the upper body are a must.

Your warm up is almost identical to mine, except that you are a much better skater - but I always start with reverts and big spins and shove its for a while, and work my way up to impact tricks. I've only been back at it for a few weeks though so my stamina level is pretty low lol.

    When I was a kid olliing 11 stairs I always thought man when I’m old my knees and wrists are probably gonna be jacked. I started skating again (just basic stuff ) and Surprisingly it’s my ANKLES😢, !

      If you were used to skating in the 90s and never had the ankle issue, I would _strongly_ suggest looking into different skate shoes and some FP Kingfoam elite insoles. I'm using puffy Es Accel OGs and FP Kingfoam elite insoles and my knees and ankles truly appreciate it! There are a lot of cupsole shoes out there with very decent ankle support. But the modern trend so to speak are flimsy thin shoes, with very little support. I'm telling you man, look into getting some more firm cupsole shoes. The Es Accel Slim, Es Swift 1.5 or thicker Es Accel OG are great. But so are some of the Etnies that are cupsole shoes as well. One could also go for mid or high top shoes and get some better ankle support that way, but those do limit ankle movement a bit more. You'll also see that shoes that provide more support and more protection will pretty much instantly make you skate more freely. I think I might be buying Es Accel OGs for the next three or four pairs of skate shoes I ride, because these are very comfortable to ride, provide decent ankle support and are grippy. The other tip so to speak could be getting some FP Painkiller socks or some other brands of socks that have some thicker layers to protect the ankle from direct board impacts. No one likes shinners, but there are way of dealing with them. Could even get a cheap pair of shin protectors with ankle protector attached to it and use those (think soccer shin protectors). I'm 35 now and pretty much all of these things make a huge difference. The insoles also really help to make skating easier on my knees as well.

    I'm 45 and just got back into it. First time since early 90s. Rolled an ankle and bruised a fibula at the park. On the couch for awhile. Just watching and learning. Maybe gonna order some stuff just to make me feel better while I recover. What online shop is best... iyo? Thanks for the great content and keep ripping!🤙

    i relate to this so much even though im 21. I might be young but i don't have young legs. i tore my meniscus playing bball & never got it fixed. every time i bend my knees you'll hear it crack like knuckles. & my body is just super prone to cramping, even with all the stretching & taking in electrolytes. I also skate alone, love slappys, & need to just get out there with what time i've got

    I find skating to the spot - if it's close by - really helps me warm up. Just cruise, swerve, get some speed, do a couple manuals and (no-)pop ollies up and off curbs.

    Got back into skating last July at the age of 34 and after a month I found that my knees were permanently sore/irritated. Went to a physio and it turns out it wasn’t the knee joints but the film of tissue on the underside of the kneecaps that were permanently irritated and unable to heal. Physio told me I was suffering from a common and easily fixable condition known as ‘cinema syndrome’ - basically you know when your knee sometimes clicks when you straighten your leg, that’s a buildup of pressure underneath the kneecap getting released. So essentially if you spend most of your time with your knees bent at work or at home the pressure under your knees remains there, which is fine, but not fine if they are irritated from skating as they won’t ever heal. Anyone with sore knees right now I seriously recommend just remembering to straighten your legs/click your knees every few minutes when sat at work or when curled up on the couch. The soreness I had in my knees was gone after only a couple of days and I’ve been skating fine ever since! Would be interested to find out if anyone else has had the same thing... skate on fellow geriatric skateboarders (Just turned 35 so guess I fall into that category now too...)

    Ben could you give me a few tips on getting comfortable skating ledges backside, or skating ledges in general? Thanks my dude.

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Backside is tricky at first. It takes a lot of practice to learn to throw the board behind you. To get comfortable at first often involves coming in at more of an angle than someone more experienced would. You have to do a bit of a backside 30 or 30 degree Ollie into the trick. Try learning stalls on unwaxed curbs at first to build your confidence.

    I started skating 10months ago the first 4 months I was progressing really well then I injured my knee so had a month off but I’m 28 and man the recovery time takes longer the older you get but the gym does help wonders finally learned how to Ollie just need to practice my technique to level the board out any tips

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just practice and be patient. If you put the time in you will get there. Proper form can't be forced it just comes with time in the saddle.

    At 43 I’m feeling the aches after just two years of skating. Taking breaks is crucial and soaking my feet in epsom salts helps after a session and of course stretch and eat properly.

    I am 42 so the warm up is pretty much necessary. Have you ever considered trying Avenues suspension trucks? Maybe you already have (new subscriber here), otherwise I highly recommend them for saving the body. I have two setups, one with regular stiff indys stage 11 and one (actually two) with Avenues suspension trucks. There is a ton of difference about how my body feels after having skated indys. One bad landing and I can feel it in the body. I have been skating Avenues for almost two years now and I skate almost every day and I skate pretty technically. If you have not tried them it could be cool idea for a future video. ;-) Nice video man! :-)

    i hate getting on my board after not being on it a while. after 2 days im back to being Bambi again on my skateboard but a couple hours in and im back to shape. my main thing i find when i skate better is when i have not eaten. so skating on a empty stomach is best for me. if i eat i feel shit and down and cant be arsed to skate because im heavy and got no energy.
