  • This repair snuck up on us as my wife found it by accident. Air and road noise was entering the cab and we did not know where it was coming from. In this video, we show you the issue and our fix for the problem.
    I am trying something different in showing you raw footage of the installation of the foam tape and the new screws. I wanted to show how difficult and the tedious these repairs can be.
    The screws I used were #12 x 14 x 1 1/4" self drilling sheet metal screws with rubber/metal washer. I bought them at the local hardware store. I tried to find a link online but the only ones I could find were in large quantities.

    Great job! Just purchased a 2015 Coachmen Freelander 19CB with a lot of noise between the chassis and the box/coach in the same area. The video is a great tutorial and a huge help. Great choice with the new fasteners. I saw the other video where they came loose a bit, probably would be a good idea to add some Loctite. Thanks you guys!!

    Mark i had this problem i watched your vid and I need to share some facts with you. first i see that the cut out made by the factory was much better then in mine. the person that cut out my cab well just say he must have been drunk or something. curves with less than a 1/4 " of skin to attach to I have pictures. the 12 screws pulled out just like yours. I call coachmen and told them the issue and they said it was very unusual to hear of this problem. And they offered to send me a new seal. which they did.
    My repair was more complicated than just replacing the screw with larger ones. And I will strongly suggest you retro fit your skin and over head as I did because I'm sure you will be heading down more bumpy roads. and your repair will come undone in a short time. My solution will never come undone or leak and I can explain why later.
    If you are traveling and these screws come loose while you travel and you encounter a massive rain storm it will leak you may know or not, but it will be a major problem that could rune your 260ds. I don't have a tube but would like to share my solution so you might . I have a lot of pictures and time invested in the restoration of my 2019 260DS.
    I cant say I bought a lemon but it's definitely not a peach. ill share my email so you or anyone else can contact me for my solution to this or other issues I have completed on the 260 ds
    wgatti@q.com please title your email 260DS

      Bill...i'm having this exact problem now. Every screw came loose. water intruded during a storm which led me to find the issue. I"m going to send you an email, if you wouldn't mind sharing pictures as well. :)

    I just discovered this same issue with my 2017 Coachman Freelander. I am the third owner and a previous owner just squirted Silicone sealant in the gap. I will be doing this repair with countersunk bolts coming down from the bunk, and washers with lock nuts on the bottom side (I am afraid that new screws will eventually back out just like the factory ones did).

      That is a great idea. I am hoping I do not need to repair again, but if I do, I will use your method. Thanks for the comment.

    Hey thanks for the video! I have experienced the same and used smaller screws, only to get the squeak back again! Should have used the larger screws as you did, so I'm going to redo..
    Seems whoever cuts the cab roof cuts too wide.
    Thanks again!

      I agree about the cutting too wide. A little care and consideration would go along way by making better cuts. Thanks for the comment.

    The industry should have created a steel backer for the screws to go through. Would take no time with a hacksaw and welder to make. just sad all that bowing of the vans roof attached to the upper bed/overhang.

    Thanks for the video. I am interested in buying this same class c. This is good information about what I should look for during inspection. Do you think the manufacturers have addresses these issue in the newer model years?

    • @RMAGarage
      @RMAGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eric, I would like to think so; but, in reality, the manufacturer's do not have the time and money to do the upgrades. I believe a lower price point is the goal of most manufacturer's.

    over a year later, how is the repair holding up? i'm having this exact issue on a 2015. Was getting wet driving down the highway and opened it up to find every single screw loose or fell out. Massive gap. I was going to use lap sealant or big stretch, then larger self tapping screws like you did. I"m just curious if its held up for you?

    can you use a little installation foam as well as tightening the screws?

    • @RMAGarage
      @RMAGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, What ever you need to seal it up. Just make sure you keep it inside and that it is not protruding outside. I would think it would deteriorate if exposed to the outside.

      Model year 2017. Seeing that all these RVs are custom fabricated, I probably got one that had a bit of a defect. I don’t think they’ve change the way they’ve built them

      @@RMAGarage thanks for the reply. Was Coachman any help to you? I just bought a 2021, and it's in for some minor warranty work, but your video caused some concern. I hope we are luckier than you were, but at least I know where to look.

    • @RMAGarage
      @RMAGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We did not contact coachman. Funny as it is looking back at all we have done to the RV, we have never contacted coachman. We purchased our RV from a dealer over 5 hours away so going back to them would be logistical nightmare. I guess I felt that the repairs were no big deal and relatively inexpensive. It also creates great TH-cam content.

    Ever hear of Locktite?

    • @RMAGarage
      @RMAGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love the simplicity of your comment and wish it was that easy. Locktite only works when there are enough threads to lock together. What we have hear is two peices of thin sheet metal that we are being held together with a course thread scew. Locktite will not work. I wish it did.....

      I would put gorilla glue or caulk on the screws before running them in to keep them from vibrating loose.

    That flimsy little foam seal is entirely inadequate, your cabover attachment was poorly designed, poorly constructed, and the installation was poorly implemented. It should be mounted with bolts, flat washers, lock-nuts, Loctite, and putty tape "rather than foam" for a secure water tight seal. And a nice clean bead of polyurethane RV sealant Around the exterior perimeter of the cabover attachment would provide additional protection.
