top tip: use a sheet of 3mm plywood for the screen front, it will strengthen everything and ensure a perfect flat screen when you fit the cloth. top tip number 2: buy a dark grey roller blind thats made to measure, top tip number 3, build a black screen, you wont need black trim around the edges and the contrast will be massively improved.
Nice video! I’ve been shopping around for a screen and everywhere I go they want $300+ I would rather build it myself cheap for same results as expensive store bought ones. Thanks!
... use your imagination… He’s giving a tutorial...a pocket hole jig, the cheapest ones are $30...if you use L brackets that’s at least 15 bucks just for the brackets... and good luck using a handsaw to cut straight edges it’ll look like “s” and fit together like “s” Smart guy... then you have to buy the staple gun, screws, wood and canvas and border paint... this is not a $30 project... and on top of that you’re doing yourself a disservice because the Joann fabric he used isn’t made to reflect projector light... The light reflected back at you will not be as good as even a $50 projector screen. Do yourself a favor if you’re thinking of doing this go buy the projector paint tape off your wall and just paint the reflective paint and if you want you can do a black border as well.
Thanks for this. I had to build 100 inch screen too and that is way i do it and i use lycra fabric that cost about 10€/1m or about 10$/40inch in us standards. So the cost is under 50$ for sure.
What a bunch of odd comments about his tools... Obviously the guy already had tools and does woodworking of sorts. What's the big deal? You don't need a band saw. And as someone who does woodworking, anyone with any sense of having the ability to reason, can do this with very low end tools. Borrow a friend's chop saw. Round the edges with just a sander. You don't need the expensive kreg pocket hole jig. Just take a minute and figure it out instead of dumping on the guy for having tools to show how he did this. So many entitled people...
Dude this is one of the worst tutorial videos I have ever seen exactly for those reasons you don't like. Making a tutorial for a simple things with complicated professional tools is the dumbest thing ever. Why are you angry about the comments? Can't you see there are so many because they are right lol.
all you really need is a drill to be honest. You can figure out all of your dimensions before you even buy the wood, and then have it all cut for you at home depot, lowes etc.
The only problem with this is the staples, the material will almost certainly stretch over time leaving ripples in the surface which are really distracting. This is why commercial screens use springs to hold the material taut, as it stretches, the springs take up the slack. Otherwise this looks great.
Great job, you just gave me an idea to make it double sided and install some hinges to the roof and magnets to hold in place and install a painting on the wall... whenever I would need the blank screen I would just pull it down....
Great job. I used this as a guideline but bought my screen material on Amazon. Although I have the tools, Lowes or Home Depot will cut the 1x4’s for all the folks without saws.
just went to home depot and spent less than $10 on the lumber, hanging canvas kit was $4 and 12$ on the fabric at joanns boom im ready to get screwing lol
I wish I saw this video before I bought my screen: now I'll be using the one I built and keep the other as a backup. Very quick and easy project, yet hugely satisfying. Thank you for the inspiration and suggestions!
Hello Zickey, I am pretty sure they will cut it for you. If they don't, you could by a cheap hand saw and make the cuts yourself. The pine boards I use would be easy to cut by hand.
The size is totally dependent on the type of projector you have and how far away it it from the wall. Every projector has it own "throw" formula. Good luck!
Curious as to what projector you have. I'm trying to make a budget friendly home theater and the projector is the biggest cost. Thanks for any input or suggestions!
Thank you for a great video !! How is the quality of the image projected on this fabric compared to the fixed frame projector screens being sold on Amazon?
I'm wanting a bigger screen and also mine has a few ripples in a couple of corners. You notice most with movement and straight lines. I have a standard type projector so would work good. Might not work as well with laser short throw due to angle. I did a test with my screen and laser for curiosity and lit up the ceiling. : (
Hello, Can you tell me what to ask for when I go get the wood. Excuse me for not quite understanding the sizes of the wood. It looks like you have 5 peaces of wood for the frame.
Great video! What is your guess on the weight of this frame? I want to build this for the patio but the wife is not going to let me drill holes in the siding. I was thinking about using heavy duty command strips?
Done this myself and initial results were great but I’ve noticed over time the screen material begins to stretch and form wrinkles. Did anyone else experience this or have a fix?
Bought my wood, about to dive in until I saw this comment. I was already thinking about using a different material but any suggestions which one is the best?
Had a quick question about the measurements. In the video you said you were cutting boards to 89 and 52. But in three comments I saw 89 and 45 which ones should I use? I'm building a 100 inch screen as well.
Hi Steve!, Sorry for the confusion. I believe you would cut the smaller boards at 45 inches. These 3 boards go in between the 89 inch boards. The 1 by 4 boards are actually 3 1/2 inches wide so you add 45 inches plus two 3 and a half inch boards and that gives you the 52 inches that I refer to in the video. Hope that makes sense!
Hi Andrew! I made the cabinet out of 3/4 oak plywood and then used real oak wood strips on the front edge. I actually recessed it into the wall when I was framing my basement so that is how it just "floats" like that and is strong enough to hold all my equipment.
If I remember correctly I believe 52" was the total counting the horizontal boards. So the short boards would be 45" and then the top and bottom 1 by 4's would give you your 52". ( Just an FYI...a 1 by 4 is actually only 3.5" wide)
I had built a screen in a similar way and its white but I've been reading about projecting onto a grey for best picture and my wall is grey so would I get a better picture just taking down my screen and using my wall? I just got a optima projector that's 3400lunens and full HD with 3d so I want the best picture without spending a lot on a screen.
I would try it on the grey just to see if it looks better. I think your projector would have to have the setting that allows it to display unto grey for best results. Good luck!
The amount of light in the room, brightness (lumens), and contrast ratio of the projector should decide the color of screen you need. The dark or gray screens perform better in rooms with lots, or at least more, ambient light, white screens work better in dark rooms. This is because the gray screens kind of boosts the contrast ratio of the picture and don't reflect ambient light.
Well it would give you a little less because the boarder blocks a a little bit of the 7'5'' original screen. Screen size is usually measured diagonally so I ended with about a 100" screen after the boarder was installed.
Great Job! I need to confirm my calculation for the horizontal boards on the frame. I see you cut the vertical 52". I get the horizontal 84", since the are placed in between laterals. Please let me know if ok.
Hello Mr Chad i liked ur DIY projector screen video, planning to buy blackout cloth in (JoAnnes Fabric store ) could you pls let me know exactly which one u purchased so that it will be easy for m to buy online .... Thanks in advance

Not stupid at all! 1 by 4 is actually a board that is 3/4 inch by 3 1/2 inches. 1 by 3 is 3/4 by 2 1/2 inches...It can be confusing. Yep, I believe 89 inches is right! Good luck on the build!

Hola buenas noches cómo está , está bonita la pantalla, qué pena no hablo inglés, de todas maneras le voy a seguir con sus modelos saludos desde Perú felíz año nuevo un abrazo.
Hi Nathan, I just cut up a bunch of 2 by 4's and glued them to the wall. Here is a video of how I did something similar th-cam.com/video/dSx0ODnnT7M/w-d-xo.html
Hey Chad DIY, did you ever have problems with those 1x4's warping? I'd imagine the center brace helped but I'm afraid of it showing through as a ridge.
Hi Eric, Yep I did the "brick" on the side. I actually just cut up some scrap 2 by 4 lumber in different lengths and widths. Then I just glued them to the drywall. Really easy to do, but it did take awhile!
Too Funny! Its like when your wife's co-worker gets flowers...and then all of the sudden you have to step up your game and get her some. Men just causes extra work for other men!
Hi Chad, I have to admit, you have a really nice videos and projects. I've seen your DIY Wood Strip Wall Art and decided to go this way in my living room. But now I saw the wood strips wall next to the projector screen. I love it!!! Could you give me some hints how to achieve such great result? Thanks Vaclav
Hi Vaclav! I made the wood strip wall next to the projector screen like this: I starting be running 2 by 4 pine lumber through my table saw. I kept adjusting the fence on the saw so I would get different thickness strips of wood. Then I cut all those strips on the miter saw into different lengths. This gave me a ton of little wooden blocks that were both different lengths and widths. Then I just glued them up randomly on the wall to get the look I wanted. If you have anymore questions let me know!
Wow bro just found ur channel love what ur doing with it and really like ur shop n I see we got the same delta bandsaw that thing is heavy as hell but they don't make them like that anymore I think mine is from 1954 but runs like a champ paid 75 for it off Craigslist I would of paid triple that but couldn't pass it up
Glad you like my channel! I think my band saw is a 1948. I got it from one of my buddy's dad and I paid $50 for it. Best buy of my life! I put a new blade on it and it runs great. Carrying down to my basement in two parts was one of the heaviest things I have every moved myself!
This is awesome! I believe Lowes or even Home Depot can cut The Wood Planks to size if requested I'd like to try this
I think you are right Damien! Most of the big box stores will cut them for you!!

Hello, I just ripped 2 by 4s down with a table saw. Then, cut them to different lengths on the miter saw.
I built one for less with a sheet of insulation foam core from Lowes or Home Depot, covered with a plastic picnic table cover from the Dollar Store.
Can you show a pic of that scrren
I love this projector! Picture quality is great and you can even watch movies on it! 10/10 Recommended

The best black or white color for 4k ???
Just wondering…. Is it possible to do this but with a tarp.

Hello Food for Men! It should be called Blackout Cloth. Joanne's will have it on a big roll.
Done this myself and initial results were great but I’ve noticed over time the screen material begins to stretch and form wrinkles. Did anyone else experience this or have a fix?
Sorry to hear you are having problems with the screen. I no longer live at this house so can't say how the screen has held up that I built.

Hi Andrew! I made the cabinet out of 3/4 oak plywood and then used real oak wood strips on the front edge. I actually recessed it into the wall when I was framing my basement so that is how it just "floats" like that and is strong enough to hold all my equipment.
what kind of cloth was that u used for the screen?
What are the measurements you used?
Are the right, middle, and side boards 52” or is that the total length of the side? Making it 60” each side since you’re using 1X4s
If I remember correctly I believe 52" was the total counting the horizontal boards. So the short boards would be 45" and then the top and bottom 1 by 4's would give you your 52". ( Just an FYI...a 1 by 4 is actually only 3.5" wide)
Does having the blackout cloth hide the middle support for your frame to where it is not seen when the image is projected on the screen?
Hi Victor, Yep...I never have noticed the middle support. The cloth completely blocked it out!

The dark or gray screens perform better in rooms with lots, or at least more, ambient light, white screens work better in dark rooms. This is because the gray screens kind of boosts the contrast ratio of the picture and don't reflect ambient light.
looks awesome to be so simple. to get the size screen you have in the video what is the measurement of the frame boards cut too?
Hi Bradley, the screen size is 7 feet 5 inches wide by 4 feet 4 inches high.

Hola buenas noches cómo está , está bonita la pantalla, qué pena no hablo inglés, de todas maneras le voy a seguir con sus modelos saludos desde Perú felíz año nuevo un abrazo.
To add LED strip, what can I do? Using this screen?
You should be able to easily add LED strips all around the edge with double sided tape...it should look pretty cool!
What material did you use for screen?
It is called Blackout cloth
Where did you get the Wood wall panels on the sides?
Hi Nathan, I just cut up a bunch of 2 by 4's and glued them to the wall. Here is a video of how I did something similar th-cam.com/video/dSx0ODnnT7M/w-d-xo.html
Hey Chad DIY, did you ever have problems with those 1x4's warping? I'd imagine the center brace helped but I'm afraid of it showing through as a ridge.
HI Tom, I was a little concerned with that as well but it was never an issue for me.
Great video, plan on following this with my own project, am curious however if you did that brick on the side ur self?
Hi Eric, Yep I did the "brick" on the side. I actually just cut up some scrap 2 by 4 lumber in different lengths and widths. Then I just glued them to the drywall. Really easy to do, but it did take awhile!
Dude...my wife found your damn video and I now I have to build this instead of buying one. Thanks
Too Funny! Its like when your wife's co-worker gets flowers...and then all of the sudden you have to step up your game and get her some. Men just causes extra work for other men!
Is it possible to paint the fabric?
I don't think paint would work with this type of fabric
@@chaddiy3512 cool, thanks
good job
I used my wall to install film and then put thin borders around just like you
Thant sounds like it would work just as well!
Please I want the link of this cloth please
I don't have a link, but it is blackout cloth I got at Joanne fabrics
How good is the picture with that cloth?
The picture looks great! I have been very pleased with it so far.
Just use black tape.project the image and put it at the end
That could work as well!
Hi Chad,
I have to admit, you have a really nice videos and projects. I've seen your DIY Wood Strip Wall Art and decided to go this way in my living room. But now I saw the wood strips wall next to the projector screen. I love it!!! Could you give me some hints how to achieve such great result?
Thanks
Vaclav
I welded some ibeams and added some concrete and made a bridge over the the bay...
And you win for the most random comment I have ever gotten!
How many yards of fabric
What are the lengths of the 3 vertical boards?
Hi Sean, the 3 vertical boards I used for the frame were 45 inches each.
Chad DIY hi Chad so if the 3 verticals are 45 each
what are the measurements of the other 2 horizontal please ?
Wow bro just found ur channel love what ur doing with it and really like ur shop n I see we got the same delta bandsaw that thing is heavy as hell but they don't make them like that anymore I think mine is from 1954 but runs like a champ paid 75 for it off Craigslist I would of paid triple that but couldn't pass it up
Glad you like my channel! I think my band saw is a 1948. I got it from one of my buddy's dad and I paid $50 for it. Best buy of my life! I put a new blade on it and it runs great. Carrying down to my basement in two parts was one of the heaviest things I have every moved myself!
whats the name of the blackout cloth
I am not sure the exact name...It was just called "blackout cloth" at Joannes Fabric when I boiught it.
Awesome video might be a little more money now days but still good on budget
Thanks! Yeah...Would cost more today, but still should be able to do it pretty cheap!
Excellent project Chad!! I absolutely love it!
Thanks Kristin...I am glad you liked it!!
