I’ve stood on stage with Elton John and was acknowledged by Paul McCartney. But the best concert I ever went to in my life was the Pat Metheny Group in the fall of 1986 at Memorial Hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a pianist I marveled at Lyle Mays, then went to earn a Master’s degree in jazz studies at Indiana University. Lyle remains in this world through both his art and inspiration.
Anyone who saw this portion of any PMG concert, the quiet tunes, recalls the absolute silence of thousands of people taking it in fully. Not even a whisper. In addition to the music itself, that aura in a crowd with the music...reverence or whatever, was truly unique and powerful.
First time I saw them in 81 that was THE moment I realized just how special it all was. Literally not a sound from the crowd. It was astounding and moved me to tears.
I thank God for letting me be born in a time where I could experience the Music of Lyle Mays (and Pat Metheny). I am so proud to have lived on the same planet that Lyle Mays walked. Rest in Peace and Music. There will never be another you in my life time. I am so sad....but feel lucky.
Almost all the times that I hear this master piece I cry...Then I remember something that my father used to say about good music...good music makes possible to reconnect with your deep feelings. At the end, I feel peace at least for a moment...
2 musical geniuses playing together. We will never hear them play together again. I will always remember their music. I am so grateful that I waked my life listening to their music. RIP Lyle
There are moments in a concert that are pure magic. Those moments, as short and fleeting as they can be, are worth the price of admission. This is one of those magical moments. Pat and Lyle are one of the great musical duos in history! 🙏🏻
This is another incredible example of how great they are... I think they will continue to be one of the VERY best groups in ANYTHING jazz... for my lifetime. Love them!
Just look at Lyle's face and eyes. So expressive. Huge concentration and attention to hit every right note. This is the panache of best musicians only.
This composition reminds me what it is to be human and feel deeply. Sometimes the world makes us numb and Pat and Lyles music brings us up to the sky where we can feel again.
I'm a critical person who can find nothing about this performance that is lacking, I don't know how it could have been done any better. It's a beautiful treasure for all.
Agree, seeing Lyle and Pat perform this beautiful piece, leaves you both encapsulated in a timeless moment and in awe with emotions. While we will miss Lyle, may all of the coming generations be fortunate enough to grasp the genius of his masterful playing along with the creativity of he, Pat and Steve Rodby.
yeah, anyone who likes Metheny should definitely buy the Speaking of Now DVD. It's incredible musically and technically. The video and audio production is great, every nuance of the performance can be heard, and the music is amazing.
thanks!.. since 2004 I have this in my mind.. hehe.. It must be very hard doing that.. specially while he's doing a solo like the one in song for bilbao.. he's an underrated genius
This composition has earned a place high on my list of too many to name Pat Metheny masterpeices. I like turning it on when I start to work on intricate projects at work. The entire Map of the World soundtrack is very provocative and soothing to my psyche. PMG, Pat Metheny or any other name that Pat associates his music with is always something that I will try. He is simply the BEST🙂
Lyle's solo in this is so mind-boggling amazing, I am floored by it every time I watch this, it's like Keith Jarret but with perfectly exacting precision, he's simply one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time
My God, no words... What to say? Pure beauty, when I listen to that I can feel worm atmosphere And the force of nature at the same time, the wind and the ocean. All what Lyle touches gets gold, my God. Pat is wonderful too. How they use dynamic is magical.
The One and Only Lyle... You're staying in our hearts forever

Lyle is one of the best musicians ever in my estimation, and I have been blessed to see so many good ones, he and Pat were my favorite duo
Lyle Mays, one of the greatest pianists in the world.
Stefano Specia rip
After listening to the PMG and Lyle Mays' music for 42 years I feel like I have lost a close friend. RIP Lyle Mays.

Rest in musical peace Lyle Mays. I will miss your artistry but your music will live on.
With them, every new one I hear becomes my favorite, until I hear another new one I have yet to hear, only to be replaced by the next one after...
Bye, Lyle! We miss you!
Awesome. Lyle truly is channeling Bill Evans in this solo, too. Nothing wrong with that!
