- Mary Poppins' Medicine ... 3 different flavors from the same bottle! Lime Cordial, Strawberry, and Rrrrrum Punch. This video is dedicated to my dearest old friend Julia and her boy who has a tummy ache.
The girl was actually not told that the bottle would dispense different colors of medicine. That shriek she gave when Marry Poppins filled her spoon was real.
What it actually dispensed it? I thought they just recolored the liquid upon editing footage way back when! O_O

Honestly, the way Julie Andrews rolls her r when she says rum punch delights me. This was one of my favourite scenes as a child.

Apparently the wee scream at 1:13 was real - the girl playing Jane wasn't expecting it to change colour like that. They didn't tell the two kids a few things would be happening in order to capture the genuine surprises on their faces.
Now that's how you know a movie is going to be good, when the crew pull off any tricks they can to make it look real.
Yes, Jane's shriek when she sees the medicine has suddenly changed color is incredible. So Karen Dotrice(who,played Jane)was,actually surprised,in reality,at that moment,when the medicine came out green instead of red? Wow.
I wondered if that bit was unscripted, because Michael looked at her like "umm what you weren't supposed to do that" xD
The director wanted genuine reactions from the children hence did not tell them about the medicine or about mary's bag

My theory is that the magic of the bottle is that it gives each person there own personal favourite flavour, Jane's favourite flavour was Lime so that's what she received, Michael's favourite flavour was Strawberry so that's what he received and Mary Poppins favourite flavour was Rum Punch so that's what she received.
In the book it even dispenses milk for the younger two Banks children who are babies

It's been years since I've watched this movie and I just now got why she hiccupped at the end.
Before there was Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans, there was Mary Poppins' Every Flavor medicine.
After watching this scene, I want to give this magical bottle of color and flavor changing medicines a go. Those medicines sure look tasty! 😅

I wonder how they made the medicine change color like that. Practical effects back then were so awesome. These days they’ll just immediately resort to cgi.
I assume the bottle would have been some kind of device similar to an Assassin’s Teapot 🫖. There were a couple of different chambers, all connected to the same spout. The back of the bottle would have had to have holes in the back and, depending on which one was covered, a different coloured liquid poured out

My theory is that each spoon has a small dab of food coloring and the stuff in the bottle is simply water.
well, thats an interesting theory and all, the kids scream was unscripted so, if your theory was true, then she would know there was dye in her spoon. but overall, a great theory
Well that's really the only theory I can think of. I forgot the reactions were unscripted. Maybe they were given the spoons without being told there was something on them that made the medicine change color and the part where Mary gives them the spoons and the part where she pours the medicine were shot at different times.
Disney isn't even entirely sure how that scene was done. They didn't put it on record. I think there were two separate sections, for the liquids, in the bottle and the bottle had a button that Julie Andrews pushed. One section was blocked when Julie was not pushing the button, allowing one color to come out, and when she pushed the button it blocked the previous section and allowed the other color to come out.
Trivia on the reaction: yes you're right it was entirely unscripted, the scream is real. However, the scream happened like that because the scene where she pours the medicine was done in entirely one shot and one take. They wanted to see what the kids real reactions would be to medicine coming out a different color when they knew it was from the same bottle.
It's also quite possible that they used something along the lines of red cabbage juice, and simply dusted the children's spoons with different ingredients that would cause the juice to change colours based on the pH level of the ingredients.

downside. before I can remember, so said my mom, I ate a whole bottle of orange flavored children's aspirin. Yummy but I did have to go get medical attention.
Was it St. Joseph's Aspirin? My American Mom claims that my American sister and I both split a bottle between us. Even worse, she claims that one day, I got into her Tylenol. Though I didn't swallow any of that, she still had to take me to the hospital for fear of poisoning. When medicine of any kind falls into the wrong hands, that's really scary!

-sigh- Why can't MY medicine taste good? The only one I ever liked was some banana flavored antibiotic I took when I was a very young child when an MMR vaccine caused me to have such a bad reaction that I needed to be hospitalized. (For those who don't know MMR is Measels, Mumps and Rubella. )

I cant remember the yellow banana flavored medicines name but I sure remember pink, liquid Amoxicillan. Tasted so good. They changed it and it doesnt taste nearly as good as it used to (I got sick a few years ago and asked the doc to give me liquid Amoxicillan. He thought I was strange.)
Just get creative-after all, it is just like the song A SPOONFUL OF SUGAR makes the medicine go down!
Mix the medicine something tasty, such as syrup, smoothie, ice cream, Kool Aid, or anything else you like(crush it in to a powder first if it is a pill). do this for the kids, too, and taking, and giving medicine will never be a struggle again!

I used to have a syrupy medication that tasted awful and one that tasted sweet. The bad one was dark red and the sweet one was orange. I forget which did what.
