I love it when the other nannies start flying. No screaming, they seem super calm, it's as if they're all going "oh well. Guess I'm flying away now. Bye Bye"

@plazasta They must have changed their minds at the last minute not wanting the job after hearing Admiral Boom fire the cannon and were looking for a reason to get away from the Banks house and the wind changing helped them to leave.

Typical British character. We generally tend to be stoic and reserved even if wind is blowing us into the air. For an American made film, they got the British mannerisms and character pretty accurate.

Also (I think only in the second version), they have people over when the cannon first goes off and a banker catches a vase. This means that many things could (and have ) broken before

@Lolo the Paragon Maybe the reason they didn't scream, yell, or react from getting blown away because, they changed their minds not wanting the job as a nanny at the banks house after hearing Admiral Boom firing the cannon at 0:57 where they were looking for a reason to be getting away from the Banks house and the wind changing helped them get out of there.

I was only 4 at the time, but I remember seeing the group of nannies all cloistered together with their umbrellas popping inside out. For years I was obsessed with umbrellas...maybe because they symbolized a vehicle that could lift me up and carry me away from an unhappy place.

+Patrick Blake That's surprising that Jane said that because she and Michael didn't get to meet them yet not knowing if they were what they advertised for or not. At least they got their wish for them to be gone having the wind blow away those nannies especially since they didn't know that their father tore up their advertisement.

@@yooneeque1 That would definitely be a little hard to know because for example, if Mary Poppins was standing in the crowd with those nannies, and if Jane and Michael looked at her it's unknown if they would think of her as the actual nanny they advertised for which she was. All of the nannies waiting at the Banks' front door get swept away by an unknown wind and here comes this person floating down on an umbrella whom Michael Banks thinks is a witch. On looking at the queue of prospective nannies, I detect one or two are (stunt) men. I’m. Curious how many of the flying nannies were stuntmen. The sheer number of stunt flights on screen all at once is a marvel! Someone else in the comments mentioned trash or litter in the streets. Of course, ALL the nannies are either holding copies of the advertisement, and/or letters of recommendation, and/or newspapers, which, I suspect, is by design and merely for the purpose of embellishing the special effect of the strong gust of wind that blows the nannies away. First we see fallen leaves blowing through the group, then umbrellas inverting, then all manner of nannies and advertisements flying away. It’s a beautifully staged & choreographed, comically built, series of stunt flights! I cannot think of a filmed flying sequence that even comes close to the shear number of actors flying at one time - perhaps the scene in The Wizard of Oz, where the flying monkeys swoop down, pick up Dorothy and, fly away! This sequence is pretty spectacular!

@drf81 That might be possible but, the wind arrow changed from West to East so that means the wind changed on it's own and later in the movie Mary Poppins said that she will stay on the job as the nanny until the wind changes and when the wind changed again from East to West was when Mary Poppins packed her things and left (probably to become someone else's nanny) and then came back when hearing and feeling that adult Michael Banks on "Mary Poppins Returns" needs a nanny for his kids while dealing with the problem of losing the house.

Why did these kids believe that their dad would run their ad instead of his own? They know that he's a stick in the mud who's forgotten how to have fun.

Nice to see two Upstairs Downstairs connections. Karen Dotrice (Jane) played housemaid Lily in Season 5. Hermoine Baddeley (Ellen) is sister to Angela Baddeley who played the cook Mrs Bridges.

That's not Julie Andrews at the end of this clip. On the DVD commentary, she states that it was her stand-in who flew down. But that is Julie at the end of the movie when she flies off. So, descent = stand-in, ascent = Julie.

I honestly love that the makers didn't obsess over the bit of trash in the street (1:33) that didn't even quiver during the wind. Shows that they focused on what really mattered: music, character, charm, in other words the important elements.
