This is an apt parable for the establishment. I think in his childhood, he had a comparable nanny to Mary Poppins. He knows magical things can happen but when you're an adult, you can no longer acknowledge them.

This scene captures all aspects of the message of this movie perfectly: Mr Banks ignorance and misplaced sense of righteousness and Mary’s sarcasm completely lost on him. The lyrics and interactions are just wonderful. What a truly marvellous movie, and how fabulous Mr Banks was portrayed by the late, great David Tomlinson.

He mentioned 'popping in and out of chalk pavement paintings', 'consorting with racehorse persons', 'foxhunting'...
Well that was set all in 'Jolly Holiday' in the film, and I gather that the books had a few more interesting adventures in them, but I haven't actually read most them so..
Actually I did read one of the later books when I was at school, and didn't really like the Mary Poppins character in the books as much as the one in the film, she seemed much stricter and not nearly as fun, but then I watched 'Saving Mr. Banks' and I gather that P. L. Travers didn't really like the Mary Poppins character as portrayed in the film as much as the one she had originally written in the books, so I guess that makes us even..

Being in my thirties know I can understand Mr. Banks more than when I was watching this movie as a child. He was under a lot of pressure: to show he was as good as his father was before him, to achieve a place in society and to be a good example for his children....of course the latter sounds hard to believe, but he was not a bad person. He honestly believed he was doing the right thing, when he realized he wasn't you could clearly see his confusion while he was walking back home after see that ideal picture he had blown apart after talking to Bert and being fired.

It's really about the father. Mary Poppins herself is just a catalyst to make the family fully realise what they already have. You could, in fact, imagine that she is a mere figment of the imagination herself whilst people like Mr Banks (and Bert) are the real protective bricks and mortar of life that makes dreams really possible. Mr Banks enables them to have a comfortable living with servants at a height of Britain's world power! He is intrinsically loving and is no more supposedly 'distant' than Mrs Banks who spends much of her time on women's marches. I'm not here to bash feminism but it had a much more benevolent impact on the upper and upper middle classes than it did on the working classes.

What's funny is that Walt Disney himself actually began developing the film with the idea that Mary Poppins was there for the children, which horrified PL Travers. She told him that he was completely wrong, but refused to tell him why Mary Poppins was actually there. Disney eventually figured out that it was for George, who was actually based off of PL Travers' own father

@@JayRaphaelJiaoInotDavid evidently wasn't a trained singer; his singing style was closer to Rex Harrison's "Sprachsingen" in "My Fair Lady". That forced Irv Kostal, the conductor, to revise a lot of his normal technique. For most of David's lines Irv held back by about 4 beats after each line break before restarting the orchestra (he did the same in "The Life I Lead"). When Julie, who was a trained singer, took over, Irv reverted to form, running through most line breaks without stopping.
Irv and Julie had already worked together on several TV shows and record albums. Several more lay ahead through the 1960s, plus "The Sound of Music" for which Irv was also the conductor. Irv and Julie shared the same birthday, October 1 (though he was 24 years older and born in Chicago). Don't know about the David-Irv dynamic.

The point is supposed to be that Mr. Banks is forcing his kids to lose their childhood, because he expects them to be like adults. Mary Poppins doesn't let them have whatever they want when they want it, she just enables them to use their imaginations and savor their childhood while it lasts.

Man, Between the great David Tomlinson, and the fabulous Keenan Wynn, it's hard to decide who was the better Disney villain. David was stellar here, and as Peter Thorndyke, and Prof. Emelius Brown in Bedknobs and broomsticks. Keenan was amazing as Alonzo Hawk.
