No one looks at Mary Poppins and sees blackface, it looks like smudges of soot from sweeping a chimney, exactly what it is supposed to look like. Also, Elsa Lanchester was a great comedian after she did the bride of Frankenstein. She’s on a classic episode of I Love Lucy as Lucy and Ethel hitchhike towards Florida. And she creates great humor as the personal nurse in the mid-50s Agatha Christie mystery Witness for the Prosecution, a top 20 movie of mine.
OK that one about 'racial' overtones to their faces darkened with soot (after being in a chimney!) is just about the stupidest thing I've ever heard; I rolled my eyes so hard it made my head hurt.
Totally agree....it's chimney soot plain and simple, the story required exposure to chimney soot with all those chimney sweeps running around. What were they supposed to substitute it with, turquoise faces? Or look like Marcel Marceau in makeup? Back then we heard no complaints from NAACP or Dr. Martin Luther King. And nobody white in the movie was berating or imitating a stereotyped African American in anyway whatsoever. All of the Banks' servants were white. No one was singing "Mammy" or "Swani" either. Such overreaching BS....
I was just four years old my father was taking me by train to see my grandma for the first time in New York from CA where we lived. We stopped in Boston and in a huge theater with red velvet curtains I watched My first movie Mary Poppins . My father lovingly let me watch the movie 3 times in one sitting. You could do that back then. I'm not sure if we were waiting for a bus maybe. I'll never forget that. One of my most beloved Memories with my father. My mom was back home in CA. with my baby brother. Thanks for the Memories God! Wonder Post God Bless Everyone I'm so Grateful for all I've been Blessed with.
MP was my daughter's go-to in her first few years of school whenever she was sick. We would wrap her up on the couch and VCR MP all day long. So I would remark- "I saw it when it first came out, and didn't think much of it. But I find that after you've seen it two or three hundred times you really start to appreciate it."
Bride of Frankenstein was released in 1935 - Mary Poppins in 1964. That's a 29 year gap, and Elsa Lanchester appeared in dozens of films during that time. Saying she was "fresh off" her performance in "Bride" is at best a bit of a stretch.

I remember the movie Mary Poppins Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke favorite thing is when they jumped into the painting with the kids the cartoon animation
The idea that Dick Van Dyke's execrable cockney accent was in any way due to Walt Disney failing to cast any British actors is utter nonsense. Of the adult cast alone, Julie Andrews, David Tomlinson, Glynis Johns, Arthur Treacher (the constable), Hermione Baddeley (the maid), Elsa Lanchester (Katie Nanna), Arthur Malet (Mr Dawes, Jr) and Reginald Owen (Admiral Boom) were all English. I don't know why no one pointed out how bad Dick Van Dyke's cockney accent was, but it certainly wasn't due to cultural ignorance on the part of the cast. Julie Andrews in particular had to effect a cockney accent herself when she played Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and so must have realised just how bad Dick Van Dyke's attempt was. I can only guess that because she was so early in her movie career she didn't feel she had the clout to insist that a dialect coach be brought in.

"Mary Poppins is a Junkie." I want that bumper sticker. FYI, Those of us who have seen "Saving Mr. Banks" are familiar with the P.L. Travers'' disputes, including her ideas about the casting choices. Yes, Lawrence Olivier and Richard Burton were good actors, but are either of them believable as Burt the Chimney Sweeper? Better yet, can you imagine either of them playing character such as Bluto Blutarsky, Jeff Spicoli, or Axel Foley?
I know Mary Poppins by book , it’s one of my favorite stories ever . When Mary Poppins went on broadway on my birthday there’s a deleted scene they’ve haven’t put there , it was the I love to laugh scene . Yes that is a fact, Glynis Johns in another film demonstrated her range impeccably. The production titled: The Cabinet of Caligari is a psycothriller with bountiful twists and turns. The movie itself was a box office struggler and is often difficult to locate for viewing and or purchase, nevertheless it is well worth the effort. Directed by Roger Kay and it does him well, I found the lighting, cinematography, casting and more to be top drawer. I will not dwell on the story line and especially its ending but mention that John's performance is a steeplechase departure from her other many and varied castings. Among other cast members is Constance Ford a lesser know actress but one who's skill and accumen lend a pointed direction to this movie. I have viewed the film hundreds of times and always find something new. I believe if you have a sense of film adventure you will be intrigued by this piece. Well done Glynis and rest in peace!
I heard that the part of Burt was meant to be played by Tommy Steel, but because he was under contract for another film, they were unable to cast him........

Contrary to popular belief Karen Dotrice did carry on acting for quite a few more years. In fact she played an extra in Mary Poppins Returns.

Dick Van Dyke's fake Cockney accent was so bad that audiences could actually understand him.
The harshest criticism I heard was people pointing out that the accent comes and goes during the film.
If Julie Andrews had originally been chosen for to be in My Fair Lady. She probably would not have gotten the opportunity to star in Mary Poppins.
Mary Poppins was a wonderful movie.
