Panel Upgrade II - Everything I couldn't tell you before...

  • Part II of this video tells the rest of the story - the things I was not allowed to talk about until AirVenture 2022, where Aspen Avionics announced the development (in partnership with Garmin) of a digital interface between the Aspen Evolution flight displays and Garmin's GFC 600 autopilot. My airplane (the Bonanza, N70TB) is the testbed for development and certification of this new interface, and it will unlock important features like altitude preselect and IAS preselect between the Aspen PFD and the Garmin autopilot. See all the details in this video.
    Errata: At 24:10 in this video, the caption says Max Unruh works for Aspen Avionics. That was an oversight; Max of course works for Garmin (as is evident by the Garmin shirt he is wearing).

    WOW!!!! The only thing left is a FADEC engine and auto-throttle. That would be like the 777 I flew before I retired. What is hard for the younger generation to understand is how far avionics have come since I started flying in 1966. The Military aircraft i learned to fly in had no flight instruments and a wet compass. It also had no navigation radios. Enjoy your new setup and explore many new places.

    Grey is always easy on the eyes with white pointers for any remaining steam gauges. Our 717's have 5 identical Honeywell MFDs any of which can serve as PFDs or HSIs or engine or systems. Some liked the old beige for a bit of warmth, and then there was the old pale green of Douglas on DC-9 and early MD-80's. Main thing is nothing distracting like wood panels don't work, etc.

  • @GaryMCurran
    @GaryMCurran ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is amazing, Martin. I always kind of worry about being on the bleeding edge, but I'm sure that Gardner-Lowe is doing top-notch work with both Garmin and Aspen. I hope the FAA gets their thumb out and hurries up in getting the stuff signed off so you can go pick the airplane up.
    As for the length of time that someone else mentioned, yeah Beech may have built in a fraction of the time, but they weren't designing a completely new avionics system. Back in '78, you might have two NavComs, a Mode C transponder and an audio panel. On a really upscale airplane, you might have an ADF and an autopilot. None of those avionics really talked to one another, except for the autopilot. So, working out an entirely new digital interface for multiple different manufacturers is not something you just throw in over night. You'd have the airplane back by now if the FAA wasn't dragging their feet, I suspect. So, don't worry about the naysayers.
    I mean, with this new autopilot, you should be able to program everything into the GTN-750s, take off, climb through 2,500', turn on the autopilot and the next thing will be on short final at minimums to turn it off.
    Anyway, this is really nice, Martin.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, Gary. And you are correct regarding the distinction between building a production airplane in the factory vs. developing and certifying something new - completely different tasks.

Your going to really like the Aspen 2500 system as I have it in my Cherokee 180…I really like i as it also integrates with my IFD540t! Thank the Good Lord, my knee is so much better now! Second, I am so jealous of your massive upgrade, but very happy for you! Of course all the electronics are dazzling, but the leather yoke and center plate were a beautiful touch! Hopefully, you'll get the airplane back soon. Maybe next year, we'll get to meet.... Great video as usual. Your situation is similar to mine. Last year I had installed in my B55 a PRO MAX EFD 1000 and a GFC600, expecting a world class autopilot combination but was shocked to discover, among other items there was no altitude pre select capability. Guess my research was inadequate. Nice to know there is a fix in the works. My current combination actually works pretty well but my C182’s G5/GFC500 is superior. (Even worse: my swimming pool is not deep enough for my yacht 😢)

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert, I can't help with your pool and yacht, but yes - once everything is approved, you will be able to add a digital ARINC 429 interface between the Aspen MAX and the GFC600 in your Baron. It will give you all those things: altitude preselect, IAS preselect, and maybe most importantly native GPSS (as opposed to using the Aspen to switch between heading mode and GPSS).

    Martin, I'm sure it'll be an awesome system, but I'm sad to see you leaving the Avidyne family! I'm an IFD guy(long before you did your IFD), I love my IFD440 and IFD100, watching your videos was more interesting and fun because of this. I'll miss you and 310 Pilot flying behind Avidyne IFD's! 😢

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gary. Leaving the IFDs was bittersweet. I really like their user interface and have gotten very comfortable with the over the last three years. At the same time, I'm always excited to learn something new, so getting to that same comfort level with the GTNs should be fun (and will hopefully benefit my instrument students, many of which have GTNs). And as I mentioned in the video, to ensure 100%, no-compromise compatibility between a GPS/NAV/COM and the GFC600 autopilot, I think the GTN was a prudent choice for me.

    Good idea going for the Aspen. I had the G-600 and it was great when it worked. However, if you have any problem, I had the magnetic compass have a software glitch, you are stuck going to a specialty shop and they didn't fix the problem right away. Which meant going back and the plane was down for over a month! And at the time, I think they changed it now, you were flying around with a bunch of big red x's. With the Aspen you could put the old instruments back in and send just the unit out.

    Hey Martin, very impressive panel refit. Congratulations on leading the way with the certification, that's a brave move and I wish you the very best of luck with all parties sticking to budget and time estimates! Coincidentally, I'm in the process of refitting my 1965 PA24-260 Comanche with Aspen screens too, but a somewhat less ambitious arrangement with only two screens, coupled to the existing STEC30 autopilot and Garmin GTN650. Should just about double the value of the aircraft, ... or more accurately cost about 50% of its value.....!!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hard to answer precisely, as prices keep changing (especially true this year) and each airplane starts from a different point. Having said that, this installation was on the expensive side of the possible range, with all-new wiring, and all-new panel, and no less than four servos to install for the autopilot. If you look at the equipment price (each manufacturer publishes that), plan to add 40-50K for installation and the new panel, and that should give you a rough estimate.

    Wow, that is some upgrade. Does Garmin need to hold on to the airplane until the TSO is signed by the FAA? - I am assuming all the testing is completed. In other words, can the interface/autopilot be temporarily disabled (obviously no autopilot) so that you can fly it home and continue flying it and then have it re-enabled once the paperwork is signed?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding is this works only with the GFC600. Intuitively it makes sense in that the GFC500 product is really just a control panel and some servos, with the actual autopilot "brain" in a separate Garmin display. So it couldn't quite work the same way with the Aspen.

      Dennis, for an all-new from-scratch panel, I bet most people will probably choose a G500TXi of G3X as their flight display - even though in terms of redundancy, the Aspen 2500 system does have the upper hand. I believe the real target market for this new interface is people who are looking for a new, modern autopilot without redoing their whole panel - maybe even people who already own an Aspen but have an old, worn autopilot that needs replacement. Now that you have 4 MFDs - I'll be interested to see how you use them, especially on an IFR flight (the geo synch chart on the right next to the PFD is ideal for me). Also, what are you going to do with your 5th "MFD" - Foreflight / iPad (just use it to file flight plans)? Won't it block the view the other 4 MFDs (haha). Are you going to get the charts for both the Garmin and Aspen equipment? You have a few choices for the chart subscriptions (also awaiting your Jepp review). Safe Flights.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good questions, Walter. This is a lot more screen real estate that I am used to, and it will take some time and experimenting to optimize its use. I don't know if this means I'll se the iPad less in the cockpit than I have so far; my guess is I'll keep it because its size and high resolution still make it pretty nice to display approach charts. But the GTN750Xi also has a very high-resolution screen, so maybe I'll change my mind. Time will tell.
      On the Aspens, I'm thinking a PFD and an ND for two of the screens (obvious choice), and maybe a traffic screen and flight timers on the third.

Garmin's manuals don't list the IFDs as approved; but then the GNS 430 and 530 *are* approved, and the IFDs are drop-in replacements. Still, occasionally you can read in online forums about things not working 100% in this combination. I wanted to rule out any such possibility, and went with the GTNs instead.

    Martin, I loved this video and all of the explanations that went with it. However, I feel like it wasn't complete because you did not go into the reasons for the Aspen PFD/MFD. You stated in the video that the Avidyne was replaced in order to get an overall semblance of units working together. Yet the Aspen and Garmin units didn't work together. That is 180 degrees from what you said the reason was for dumping the Avidyne units. If you had a deal with Aspen to get a free or deeply discounted unit in exchange for them using your plane as a test-bed, that's fine. It's certainly understandable. But if you did have that, I didn't hear you tell that story - especially when a G500 or G600 would have interfaced with the GFC600 seamlessly. It made no sense to use Aspen when Garmin already had the solution available to you. I'm not trying to call you out on anything - I'm just curious why you used Aspen when it didn't work with your new Garmin GFC 600, and a new software program had to be developed for it to work properly. Thanks for all that you do in the aviation community, and I do really like your videos. This one just left me with more questions than answers.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great questions, David. You are right that going all-Garmin would have been easier, and probably much faster as well. But when I learned that Garmin and Aspen were looking for a testbed for their collaboration, I was very interested. Here's why: The insights into development and certification I got during the process have allowed me to learn a lot of things I only knew vaguely before. The path takes much longer, but there is some interesting discovery at each corner. And yes, sometimes there can be frustrating discovery as well, but those still create learning opportunities.
      I also take comfort in the fact that once the project is done, the absolute best engineering experts for the Aspen PFD and Garmin's GFC600 have looked over my installation with a fine-toothed comb, and in terms of setup and configuration I should expect that my install will be optimized and checked to a point that no avionics shop is capable of doing - in other words: perfect. That alone might be worth the price of admission.
      And finally, I applaud Garmin for cracking the door open a little bit towards working with other avionics companies and creating compatibility with other equipment. That is good for all of us, and I am very happy to be part of that.
      So, all of the above led me to where I am: with an Aspen Evolution 2500 in an otherwise mostly Garmin cockpit (except the JPI EDM930 engine monitor).

      No, this interface will require a GFC600. The GFC500 is really just a control panel and servos, and it relies on a Garmin display to serve as the autopilot computer.

    While waiting can’t you fly your plane with the AP inop? Not ideal but at least you can fly your plane and then bring it back to get the AP sign off.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was my thought initially, too, but if you think about it, declaring the autopilot inop doesn't change the fact that the installation and wiring of the avionics system conforms with yet-to-be-approved installation manuals. So inop or not, the whole setup would have to be reverted to the old analog interface, which makes little sense.

      Good question, Ted. Yes, I could have had something working in less time. Part of the fun was to experience the development phase of something new. But I also like the fact that Garmin is cracking the door open a little bit towards making their equipment more compatible with other manufacturers, and I'm happy to be a part of that.

      Did you sacrifice a child’s or grandchild’s educational funds? I remember about 25 years ago an acquaintance, who was a wealthy oil man in Texas, bought Beech-36 off of the show room floor for $450k. Now a new Cessna 172 cost a bit more. I have owned three airplanes and the most I paid for any of them was $12k dollars: 1947 Cessna 140, a 1947 Stinson 108-1 and a 1946 Culver V. With puddle jumper engine going for $37k, glass cockpits for the same or more, even kit planes are $200k now. Apparently they are tapping into a wealthy market share. The price of something is only worth what the markets will bear. This ballooning of cost has occurred in a short span of time. I am happy you have the disposable income or a business write-off to support this. If the aircraft is paying for itself, it does not matter what the cost is. I am just whining that the cost of something that I love is now totally out of reach. I am not alone by any means.

  • @Captndarty

    I enjoy your videos and think this build is wonderful but in my opinion there’s no way it should take over four months. Beechcraft built your plane in a fraction of that time. It’s ridiculous to think that a plane just sits in the hanger for a week or two until they can touch it for one or two days and then leave it for a week or two and go back to it

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it was just an installation of off-the-shelf equipment, then I'd agree. But you did see the part where I say this isn't just an installation, but a development and certification project of something new, right? Gardner Lowe finished the installation in six weeks, which I think is pretty darn fast for a job this size. The rest is development, flight test, and certification.
