    I am watching this video as IO write. Last summer I had AirPlains IO550 conversion done to my 1971 C182. I absolutely love it.

      John Fletcher I also had Air Plains install the -550 in my 1975 C-182 May of last year. Takeoffs and climb outs are awesome. And with the GAMI’s you can really lean it back and save some gas if you’re in no hurry. Great motor! Cheers!

    That's awesome Martin, glad for you! Everyone should, at least once in their flying careers, get their hands on a Bonanza. Such a sweet handling plane. Nice job!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, Buck. The Bonanza is a joy to fly. Hard to go back to a Skyhawk or Cherokee once one has gotten used to a Bonanza!

    Did anyone else notice something dripped from right behind the vacuum filter at about 12:35 right after Shane removed his hand from the filter housing? Great video....

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes - a drop of water. In the rain, some water can be trapped under the cowling, and when you open the cowling the drops start moving.

    Absolutely beautiful! Hope you’ve been getting to fly a lot. I have one minor concern. In your video at the 10:37 mark the spark plug wires are laying on top of your orange fuel line which are laying on top of the fuel line injector clamp. Over time the edge of the clamp my rub a whole in your fuel line hose. I’m not sure I got all the parts right, I’m not a pilot, but like watching your videos.

    Great summary of the engine exchange process! I did the same for my Arrow 200 this past winter but the break-in was prolonged a bit because I cannot easily get down to an altitude where 75% power is achievable! My field elevation is 6900' and the nearest 4000' area is a haul from here. Your ordering time was about what I experienced from Air Power too. Probably normal EXCEPT when you are waiting!!! Enjoy your new motor...and the empty wallet!!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, Jim. You are right about the empty wallet - that alone gives me an additional 200 feet per minute of climb rate! 😀

    Thank you so much for this video and info, I watched it several times. I'm working on the long process of figuring out how to buy my first plane and seriously thinking of a Bonanza. I found a V-tail worth considering but would need a new engine soon so I called up your shop in Pella to price check. Hope you don't mind but I mentioned your video and your engine upgrade. Great video! I own and fly an SR22 and it's cool that you did the engine upgrade in Pella...I happened to overnight there when I flew my plane across the country to the west coast a while back...they run a great operation there! I remember being very pleasantly surprised by my stopover there. Thanks for providing all the information! The engine in my plane is at 1360 hours now so I am starting to think about what the process of overhauling my engine would be like (hopefully not for a long time though!!). Take care and keep uploading those videos :)

    Hello Martin
    While you were doing your visual of the IO-550 engine. I observed one of your fuel lines support clamp appears to be misaligned when support the fuel line.
    The one in question is the fuel line for the front cylinder on the right side. From my view,it appears that the metal clamp and the rubber insulator are not aligned correctly crating a metal to metal contact between the fuel line and the metal of the support clamp.
    Just to let you know, I am a certified aviation quality assurance inspector
    Please recheck all clamps to ensure all lines and clamps are not creating chafing.

    Lookin Good...wishing you many happy flying hours with your new engine, and of course, looking forward to any videos you share with us. You're lucky to be tall, you can see over the top of your engine, a plus in that regard for sure. It appeared to me that the ignition wires were sitting on top of one of the orange hoses..could that be a wear issue in the future due to vibration?

    • @martinpauly

    Nicely done & congrats. Sounds like a big price tag but much nicer than trying to maintain and upgrade a light twin! You'll also enjoy a boost in value if/when it comes time to sell your plane.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I could have bought a twin for that money, with two working engines. Problem is, flying and maintaining a twin is a lot more expensive than the Bonanza. So while this was a very costly upgrade, it's a one-time charge, and from here on I hope to fly for pretty much the same operating cost as before.

    I broke in my IOF-240B5 at 3000 75 % power for an hour and then I stayed at 3000 and every 15 mins went down to 65% for 15 min then went back to 75% for 15 min and then went down to 70% for 15 mins. Was very interesting to hear what folks thought and how they thought it should be done. I used the XC Phillips 20W50 too based on factory recommendation. My new airplane Cessna 400 just had the 550-C put in 150 hours ago and I'm using the XC Phillips 20W50 in it too.
