Shin Chan is criminally underrated.. I grew up on the Funimation dub (defo not something I should've watched as a kid) but virtually no one ever talks about it! Glad to see some coverage on the franchise as a whole.

You left out a very huge part of the world and fandom that generationally grew up on Shin-Chan, the Chinese speaking world that includes China, Taiwan(which granted the world an extremely iconic Mandarin Shin-Chan dub), Malaysia, Singapore and more. And I’d say the Taiwanese version is the most faithful of the Japanese original in the world because they kept every raunchy joke and adult theme.

I’m so glad you’re expanding on the greatness of Crayon Shin-Chan. While I visited in Japan last month, Shinosuke was everywhere. He’s like the Bart Simpson of Japan. You’re very thorough in your research and it’s really impressive. You earned a sub.

I'm from Spain and Shin-chan is my childhood I'm so glad to see people talking about it, I used to love it as a kid and even today I still love to go back to the DS games and the movies, (Adult empire strikes back is no joke my favorite movie of all time and always manages to make me a bit emotional), the show is still earing over here, but sadly the distribution rights were bought by Fox meaning it's no longer on public TV, there's still the official channel who posts old chapters and that's honestly my main go to for comfort shows.

  • @unfathomablemortal

I absolutely adore Crayon Shinchan! I grew up watching the Hindi dub on TV. It's a really big part of my childhood since I grew up in a city and was not allowed to go out as much. I had two working parents and was an only child for 8 years of my life. So, I spent most of my free time in front of a screen.
Shinchan is still one of my absolute favourite shows because It's one of the only shows that I have watched that is totally based on the mundane life. There are no superpowers, or magic or science fiction surrealism (excluding the movies) It was a show about a regular middle class family and a normal five year old boy. It's something that I appreciate more and more as I grow up.
And the show is just so rewatchable! I can still see it for hours and not get bored. Truly one of the special parts of my childhood.

I remember watching snippets of Shin Chan in my aunt's house in Nicaragua. Sadly the US had like this block on anime and the ones we got on 4kids at least were butchered(they did give us glorious VAs though. Gotta put some respect on them). Latin America was in on the craze much earlier than the US so visiting my family in Nicaragua was how I discovered Doraemon, Crayon Shin-chan, Ultimate Muscle, and Captain Tsubasa to name a few.

I'm not sure I could call the Funimation dub "butchered", exactly, maybe more like frankesteined. I did some reading up on Shin and his oddities in the original version, and I realized some of the big reason they took the 2008 version the way they did was because so much of the original humor was derived from cultural norms and touchstones that just do not translate over well at all. Like the whole "when you say a specific phrase, you're supposed to do a certain gesture/movement to go with it and Shin rarely ever gets it 'right' " thing? I can't think of all that many phrases here in the west we have that it is considered socially normal and "proper" to always attach the gesture or hand motions to go along with it. But then, that's just my thoughts on it. Happy to see this, though! That show is a "comfort" anime for me and I'm still trying to figure out why xD

Some of the dated references for the Funimation Dub ended up helping me get a slightly better pop cultural idea for what might've been going on at the time that I might've been to young to understand at the time they were happening. As well as give me some things to look up and around at to sort of play search the references. ex) the episode with the Dead Clown Mr.Peebles episode, Fairly Bad Things, was a parody of this 90s movie Very Bad Things also the Cleaning Service that Mitzi started with Summer was a parody of this movie called Sunshine Cleaning. I'm not sure if hearing all the references got me to check out all the movie and show things they were talking about, but it made me feel productive and it was kind of interesting to see and see what the lines matched up to being distanced from the time of the show and not having as strong a connection to the time period and references. So it was kind of a museum sort of search and view experience with a South Park style crude humor air about it.

Yooo, the Indian Shin Chan lore is a bit deeper, they initially aired without censoring the nud*ty and made shin really rude to her mom. kids started doing all that irl, then they started watering it down to the point that it was completely neutered. Also, the funimation changed more than the names, they go to an American school smh. 😭. Ik its a bit dated but the republican Georgie was too on point i loved how they Americanised it.

As someone who has grown up with a more childfriendly eng dub and loved shin chan. (Although it was removed from kids channels because even that version wasn't child friendly enough with parents complaining for years) It was wildly popular however. The more adultlike funimation dub that I've watched many years later blows my mind it is such a shame that they only did 3 seasons. It's a massive improvement. They also dimmed down on the ass scenes big time in funimation dub. which is a good thing, cause those scenes rarely where that interesting was always the same thing didn't add much isn't that fun with some exceptions. That being said the darker adult themes and the personality switches, the different plots in the funimation dub elevate this series to an entire different lvl. Made my appreciation for the series even higher than it already was. Funimation made the right call since they had to up the age ratings anyway. Also more adult themes aside, funimation dub had higher quality voice actors than the other eng dub it was a huge boost in that department aswell. It was actually properly done. It is by far the best version of Shin chan quality stuff.

I'd love to see Funimation bring the show back for either one more season, or do an adaptation of one of the movies.
I know they took the show off their library for a reason, due to the more raunchier risque humor being a little much after 2017 or 2018, I forget. I thought that was a shame.
I thought it'd be cool or funny if they surprise brought it back via a dubbed movie on Adult Swim via one of those April Fools Day Pranks by dropping that dubbed movie on their Adult Swim stream on TH-cam, kind of like what they did for Smiling Friends this year with all those different style puppets and season 2 episode 1. I can imagine that being a little difficult rights wise and marketing-wise. I think the American Audience that enjoys that dub is probably really niche and probably wouldn't be enough to be considered profitable, as well as factoring in the audience under the original one that probably wouldn't know what this is exactly. So it's kind of a financial risk and might not be worth it.
...not the best plan or idea. No idea how to think it out properly and make a good suggestion for it. Just something I'd like to see that has no chance😔.

I definitely prefer it over the Funimation dub, because it has a good balance of faithfulness to the original, without being too faithful to the point of having jokes lost in translation.
Having an iconic voice acting cast comprising 90s cartoon voice actors makes me like it as well.
Watching it subbed/unsubbed will always be the best to me however.
