    Danny, I wanted to tell you thanks for the great work you have done on your videos. As a railfan I've watched videos from many people, but the time you have taken to not only edit them but the narration has to me been awesome. No one can even come close to the professionalism you have shown. Again, thanks for making this fan very happy!

      Yeah, and RFD TV Bound ... Is where these videos should be playing, at least once a week, if not more. I get tired of old/ancient steamers where their engineers and crews are all in their graves.

      I lol at that too! I did a video not to long ago and it was about 4 degrees. But I'm sure 48 to him down there is about the same as 4 here. It's what you are used to.

      SmokeStack684 Thanks! I'm not really very good at all. These things are just made so easy to fly that it's hard to mess them up. All GPS and compass controlled. If you let go of the controls, it just hovers in place. If the copter loses signal from the controller, it returns to its takeoff point automatically. Pretty cool.

I'm guessing that as long as you keep the quad a safe distance from the train, they won't consider you a threat and will pretty much leave you alone.

      B King It's an industry secret, but I'll tell you if you promise not to spread it around. It's called "audio post production". When I fly to copter to shoot a train I always roll my primary camera on the ground at the same time. In editing, I simply replace the copter audio with the ground camera audio. It's pretty easy.

      TheAmericanGamingUnion As with everything,it depends.A top of the linePhantom4,or Inspire2,will set you back several thousand.There arensome very serviceable options for under$1000.One is the Yuneec Q500.Yuneec,is..unique because they are also building,real,passengercarrying,electric aircraft.Another is the AutelX-Star,and theX-Star premium.The Premium shoots in true 4K UHD,and has a control range of over a mile.You can get cheaper,still serviceable ones for a few hundred dollars.TheGPS enabled ones practically fly themselves.In fact,some of them let you program a whole mission,for true autonomous operation.Even when the dronenis operating autonomously,you are required to follow FAA requirements.Railfanning,and drone flying,are two hobbies that pair well together.It helps if you have money to burn,but doesn’t have to be prohibitively expensive.

    Quick question. When the trains operate empty and taking cars to be filled someplace else does the company have to do this for free or do they get some revenue for moving those cars? My expertise is aviation and they don't do ANYTHING for free. Just curious

    • @distantsignal
      @distantsignal  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great question. I know a partial answer: Yes, the railroad eats that on the empty return. It's built into their cost of doing business. They try to find a "Backhaul" customer whenever possible. That is, find a shipper who wants to send something in the car on it's return trip. I don't know how often that happens, but I don't think it's 25% of the time.

  • @szabados1980
    @szabados1980 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Beautiful areal clips. But I am shocked to see that none of these railways are electrified. Not even the nine-track freight yard. Hauling all those extra heavy trains by diesel must be uneconomical and the least environmentally friendly.

    • @maxshelltrack9720
      @maxshelltrack9720 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most U.S locomotives make their electricity on board they refer to them as diesel electrics that's why there are no wires overhead it's more feasible that way because of the tonnage they have to pull.

    • @szabados1980
      @szabados1980 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maxshelltrack9720 Diesel electric is also known around here but only as a second worst option.
      Proper electrification is justified by freight traffic. The longer goods trains travel and the heavier the haulage, the more profitable it is. For passenger trains it is only justified on high speed lines or if a main line is electrified for goods trains anyway. Not to mention the benefits on the environment: guzzling diesel to generate electric power comes with a lot more pollution than generating electricity in a dam or from wind power.
      Yes, it requires a vast initial investment which is provided by the governments but once it is in place, it pays off quickly and makes profit. This initial investment must be missing or it is considered too high over there. On this side of the pond every country has made this move except for the United Kingdom where the government traditionally refuses any subsidy to the railways so they are always on their last pennies.
      Seeing such heavy goods trains, double track main lines and stations without a catenary system makes me think this footage is from the 1920s. But then where are all the steam locos? :-)

      Aaron Safioles Hi Aaron. Not familiar with the Dromida. I went with the DJI in January on advice from several friends in the RC hobby. They've made advances since the Phantom2 with the Vision2+. and the ZenMuse H3-3D.

    Quick question Danny: Does that dwarf signal at SE Wildwood Yard gaurd the mainline or the Yelvington switch lead?

      +Milepost 282 Productions Pretty sure that signal guards the Yelvington lead onto the main.

    I wish I could do what you do, I love taking photographs of trains and I do take some videos and then make them into my own personal ones, but I love what I have seen so far. I live in Red Wing, MN and we have Canadian Pacific around here and then across the river we have BNSF but not many trains travel the CP line to do like what you do.... I would like to send you and invite to join my facebook group called Train Addicts I think my members would love these videos.

    Great work. But on TH-cam, the videos have an awful lot of judder that I find distracting whilst watching. Is this just an artifact of TH-cam's conversion and compression? Would be disappointed if the original material was this jerky.

      BlokeOzzie Yes, You Tube's compression codec smashes the daylights out of video. The original looks much better.DH

      Figured they would. Pity. But great work on the vids; very professional looking.
