Thank you for that little history lesson! Ive lived in Meldrim for over ten years and knew that a train wreck had occurred but knew none of the details. Thanks again Brother, Good Job!

Good job sir. You did an excellent job. Meldrim Memorial Park is in Memory of the 23 people tragically killed that day. This year marked the 60th Anniversary of the disaster and the loss is still felt by our community. Glad to see a lot of the photos and video I obtained over the years from the people of Meldrim and survivors of the incident. Thank you. ~ Stephen Newsome

Also did you notice I gave credit for your video? People like us have to keep the history of our nation alive. With our history being forgotten and or re-writen the way it is today, people years from now with think this country has a totally different past. Its when we forget that history, good or bad, happy or somber. Its then that we tend to repeat it. Thank you mr. Newsome for the compliment.

That trestle did not, and still doesn, have the customary “guard rails” in the middle of the track to keep the wheels from completely Rolling off the track and the bridge. The ICC nailed them for that. The heat kink that caused the derailment was actually above the bridge; the cars hit the ground and started bouncing around until they finally reached the bridge and went off. Those guard rails could possibly have prevented those wheels from going completeLy off the bridge, which is what they were designed to do. An accident that should’ve been a lot less severe than it was.

I totally agree and talk about the lack of those guard rails in the video. Thank you for watching and not only watching but taking the time to comment as well. Have a great day. Thank you.

My father, deceased Trooper Charles F. Duncan, was the state patrolman shown on scene speaking to one of the survivors.

At the end, in the honor of section, You left out Ted Barnes, the 1 year old son of Elizabeth Dixon Barnes, who also died in this disaster. Elizabeth was my mom's best friend and I was 2 in 1959. We were supposed to be there that day with Elizabeth, but got sidetracked. We would have died with Elizabeth and Ted and Elizabeth's parents, Edna and Frank Dixon. My mom passed in 2016 and never got over her death!!

I’m putting together a video on the Georgia Central Railway’s International Paper train out of Savannah that runs to Meldrim. Could I use some snippets of your video about the wreck so long as I credit you for the segment? Thanks!

Cool are you getting shots of the bridge by any chance. If so make sure your hitting the 3rd bridge. I thought I was at the right one and come to find out I was at the 2nd. Same rail different bridge

Hello.... Hello.... This is the actual train photographed at Pitts,Georgia photo by David Salter. You can see the train has 4 locomotives, GP-9 1954 leading 3 SAL RS-3's. None of the locomotives were involved. The caboose was number 5612.

Neither the Seaboard or the Atlantic Coast Line ran to New York or Memphis, or New Orleans. The SAL ran from Richmond to Hamlet,N.C. to Columbia,S.C. Savannah,Ga Jacksonville,Fl and Miami and Tampa. SAL had a line to Charlotte, that ended at Bostic Yard,N.C. and that line broke off the SAL mainline to Atlanta at Monroe,N.C. The line then ran to Birmingham. The Line in question here, was the SAL line to Montgomery,Alabama, where it connected with the L&N and GM&O railroads. But the Seaboard nor the Coast Line owned ANY trackage to New York, that is bunk. The SAL and ACL ran as far north as Richmond,Va. and NO Farther. Sure wish people would get their INFORMATION correct, not blurt of stuff that is no where near correct, this guy looks real strange saying things that are not one bit true.
