My friends and I did figure out Psycho Mantis by our selves, but it was sheer accident. We also played Tekken together, so we had the other controller plugged in and someone picked up the wrong one. Suddenly it was "why can't I read your mind!?", but it wasn't until getting stuck again on the next play-through that we worked out what had happened. Mind blown.

I still remember how I got through that train scene in San Andreas: Used a ramp to juump up onto the train while riding the motorcycle, and just proceeded to road kill all the bad guys on top
Yeaah I think I did the same thing! Lol took me a few tries to do that correctly and actually land on top tho and not overshoot or undershoot the train. But that was infinitely easier than doing it the normal way lol
The flooding level in Blackwater City in Ratchet and Clank. Was stuck on that for literally six months. Grinder enough bolts to get the RYNO in the meantime though. So that was a fun playthrough afterward.
First time I played MGS was when I rented it from Blockbuster. It came in a yellow plastic case, not the original, so didn't have Meryl's codec number. Which meant I had to start at one end of the codec bandwidth and try every possible number until I found the right one . . .

I didn't have too much trouble with the Great Crystal, but that's only because I drew maps. This is a video game, why am I covering pages with hand-drawn maps?
Maybe it's not as hard as I remember. But that bit in Jak 2 with enemies air dropping onto the pier is the greatest single act of perseverance I was ever able to muster.
Stuntman was 100x worse, quite honestly its the only game i tossed in the garbage and didnt regret at all even though it wasnt my game. I still feel like i did my cousin a favor by forgetting the disc was in the garbage.

For me, the boss fight at the end of Yooka-Laylee just killed me. Up until that point, it felt like a gentle, pleasant platforming nostalgia trip. Then Capital Bee shows up with his 19 different phases and after several days, I just gave up. Never did finish the game...
well back in the day of ps1 and one of the best ffs ever, i got stuck on the "find the white seed ship" for 30 hours or so. got my levels and geart to good, but still didint just know when to turn the camera angle on the right dirrection. but after 30h or more got lucky :) ou yeah sorry and we are ofcourse talking about final fantasy VIII
The first time I got 'stuck' is still the most iconic in my mind. Megaman Legends, my favorite game of all time. You reach a point when trying to get to the second dungeon you have to go by boat and it's one of only two stationary sections in the entire game. In a game that teaches you to dodge and move you're suddenly turned into a turret and tasked with keeping submersibles from sinking your ship. Of course once you get through the grueling assault by multiple tiny ships the boss shows up with its hugely damaging attacks and sizeable health bar. I must have spent weeks slamming my head into that sudden difficulty wall, as a kid I simply had no idea how to make it to the boss and not have my ship smoking and on its last leg. Even now replaying that game on the regular and knowing everything about it I still have that moment of apprehension before starting that mission.
The Water dungeons of the Legend of Zelda series have a knack for being particularly devious, the most infamous being the one in Ocarina of Time. It really isn't that hard once you know what to do to navigate it though.
@@Wirraburra07 being a NES game, there isn't kneel command or prompt of any kind to use the crystal, but kneel=crouch makes sense I guess, the hard part is to know what is supposed to be the lake and which place to kneel, there are alot of parts with water, and the water themed stages are not it, I revisited all parts of the game that had water sections 3-5 times, until I gave up and looked up the specific tile on google, and the tile looked exactly as the other million tiles in the game, of course like all puzzles it makes sense once you know the solution.

I've just played through FFVII again and I cannot figure out how I managed to complete it the first time around twenty odd years ago without a guide! My teenage brain must've been incredible.
Patience. I'm the same, playing through it again in Ps4 I wondered how on earth I'd managed it in 1998 and I remembered, I'd give games another go and another go until I beat them or learned how to. I couldn't be bothered now, if there wasn't such a thing as guides now I doubt I'd finish a lot of games. If I get stuck, I move onto another game seeing as Sony almost gives them away. I will never ever figure out how I managed to breed a Gold chocobo though, I must have got randomly lucky at some point as it's so obtuse. Even reading the steps now seems too tiresome for me to attempt so I've no idea how I did it pre-internet and not knowing a single person that'd played the game.
Getting the gold relic in the Highroad literally took me an entire day of playing that one level over and over and over and over and OVER! As for places I got stuck I have to go with Final Fantasy X and Seymore Flux atop Mt Gagazet, you have no idea just how many times I heard "Pitiful mortal, your life ends here. And your meaningless existence with it."
What really got me stuck in the Temple Of The Ancients because I didn't get that there was a passage way you could walk through because of the confusing perspective. I ran back and forth trying to find a way but I just didn't see that what I thought was a wall was in fact a passage.
I beat it before it got patched on the hardest difficulty. Took me foreveeeeer. That part was so weirdly difficult compared to the rest of it. Definitely a trial.
The first time I played through Final Fantasy 7 was in 1998 when i was 8 years old. I don't recall having trouble with the temple itself, but holy heck do i have some bad experience with the Demon Gate boss. Rob is not kidding on that one. Even now i don't look forward to that boss.

@@richardthompson790 This is why I always say that gaming in the old days are much harder and yet entertaining than it is now, because there's no TH-cam nor well established online forums to guide you when you are stuck. While I was not tested by Psycho Mantis, I was by the MGS VR missions, and they are no less a challenge to get through (the 10-consecutive-stages time-attack VR mission and the puzzles are particularly hard), and this isn't something that a friend who played the game can teach you by words, either. Nowadays, if you are stuck, just ask Google, and the rest is up to your skills. It became so much easier.
Hey I have one for this! I figured out the Spyro bit! It took me like 20 minutes to even see how to do and then about as long to actually do it but I did it and I’ve rarely felt so accomplished in a game.
My friend and I figured out Psycho Mantis... I had been watching him play through most of MGS and also perplexed about how to beat Mantis. After a few tries, i remember just picking up the 2nd controller and when we realized both realized it - it was awesome. I handed it over to him and kept the story going after he beat. Felt great to contribute and like a team win. Such an incredible experience and really solidified how innovative metal gear was!

Broken Sword brings back memories, memories of the monkey islands games pre-playstation. After solving (by solving, i mean hunting down a walkthrough) some of those puzzles, the Goat puzzle seems rather simple.
Getting the Babel fish in the Hitchhiker's text adventure. Absolute nightmare. Also, getting a belt buckle in the Discworld game. If I heard Eric Idle say, "That doesn't work," ONE. MORE. TIME. IT WAS A RENTAL. I HAD TO KEEP RE-RENTING IT.
You just needed to jump over the train and start shooting those damn VAGOS. At least that's what 7 year old me did back in 2004. I recently discovered that wasn't the right way to do it. But I think my version is more cinematic.
That San Andreas mission was hard as balls when I first played it years ago. I like 22 or 23. I'm 37 and I played it again recently, took me 2 tries mostly because I took the stairs near the beginning of the mission. Now, the Red Baron missions are the stuff of nightmares.
I killed Mantis on my first playthrough without even realizing you can switch controllers. If you don't, every 20th or so hit of yours will land and do pityful damage. I beat him abusing that. It took me about 2 hours, but I did it, and I genuinely thought that was the intended way.
That SODDING Irish goat!!!!!!!!!! I was stumped on that for over a month, eventually found a players guide printed in a free book that came with a PlayStation magazine, HALLELUJAH! To this day, Broken Sword remains my favourite ever game. Long live George & Nico 😊
Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater - The Sorrow Battle 😓😢😫😪☹😥 It took me over a month to figure out how to beat this boss 😂😓💔 Edit 1: You know the funny part was I wouldn't actually be able to figure out that i can use the Revival Pill if i didn't rage and throw the controller on the ground 😅
I recently played it again and actually got though the tutorial in an hour. I will say that the game afterwards is a lot of fun and is worth the tutorial headache.
The dog at the gate of the docks from broken sword 2 the smoking mirror comes to mind. Couldn’t even complete the demo disc for ages before renting the full game. After this part, even the endgame was simple. The earlier ones didn’t have the cog pointer when you hovered over stuff so it added a bit of difficulty. Also final fantasy 7. Getting ejected into the desert from the golden saucer comes to mind many extra saves, endless linked screens, and powerful giant sand worms. From memory you had to do the screens in a certain order to escape. Such a great game. So exited for the remake.
I think ive never been stuck on more on a part of any game than i have on killzone 2. Right before Radec there is an arena you have to go through.. That arena is so unbelievable to get through even on the easiest difficulty
Spyro. That crystal mini game where you have to beat Hunter and prevent him from getting more crystals than you. I screamed blue murder over that one! And also, to a lesser extent, the ice hockey mini game
What a time when we used to trade information in person for games. One of the best was trading fighting game moves. However, I really like being able to get help on a randomly tricky part.
Shadow of the Colossus - climbing around the 16th (& final) Colossi's wrist very awkwardly whilst losing grip before bow & arrow shooting a target with very little time between the wrist flipping over completely again which causes you to lose grip dangling, leading to dropping or losing balance shooting or missing the following jump-falling to do all the climb up again, and again.
"All you had to do is follow the damn train, CJ".... Probably the most infamous and infuriating text line of Videogames History.

The Water Slum ambush in Jak II. I think it took me 2 years to beat that mission for the first time.

@@DavidCowie2022 yeah once you have drawn or found a map off the area it get's kinda easier but it is still difficult
The trick is to make a note of the waypoint numbers, you're going down in 2s while you progress (the inbetween ones are the waypoints you exit from)

In a game that teaches you to dodge and move you're suddenly turned into a turret and tasked with keeping submersibles from sinking your ship. Of course once you get through the grueling assault by multiple tiny ships the boss shows up with its hugely damaging attacks and sizeable health bar. I must have spent weeks slamming my head into that sudden difficulty wall, as a kid I simply had no idea how to make it to the boss and not have my ship smoking and on its last leg. Even now replaying that game on the regular and knowing everything about it I still have that moment of apprehension before starting that mission.

The Water dungeons of the Legend of Zelda series have a knack for being particularly devious, the most infamous being the one in Ocarina of Time. It really isn't that hard once you know what to do to navigate it though.

For those of us that may never play the game, just how difficult was this particular puzzle?
@@Wirraburra07 being a NES game, there isn't kneel command or prompt of any kind to use the crystal, but kneel=crouch makes sense I guess, the hard part is to know what is supposed to be the lake and which place to kneel, there are alot of parts with water, and the water themed stages are not it, I revisited all parts of the game that had water sections 3-5 times, until I gave up and looked up the specific tile on google, and the tile looked exactly as the other million tiles in the game, of course like all puzzles it makes sense once you know the solution.
Back in the day, high road was my jam but the n-sane trilogy version was the bane of my existance. Lost all my lives and hit so many game overs. Thanks Vicarious Visions
I've just played through FFVII again and I cannot figure out how I managed to complete it the first time around twenty odd years ago without a guide! My teenage brain must've been incredible.
Patience. I'm the same, playing through it again in Ps4 I wondered how on earth I'd managed it in 1998 and I remembered, I'd give games another go and another go until I beat them or learned how to. I couldn't be bothered now, if there wasn't such a thing as guides now I doubt I'd finish a lot of games. If I get stuck, I move onto another game seeing as Sony almost gives them away.
I will never ever figure out how I managed to breed a Gold chocobo though, I must have got randomly lucky at some point as it's so obtuse. Even reading the steps now seems too tiresome for me to attempt so I've no idea how I did it pre-internet and not knowing a single person that'd played the game.

Same, for some there was no options, either work it out or have nothing to play until your next birthday or Xmas rolled around.
Getting the gold relic in the Highroad literally took me an entire day of playing that one level over and over and over and over and OVER!
As for places I got stuck I have to go with Final Fantasy X and Seymore Flux atop Mt Gagazet, you have no idea just how many times I heard "Pitiful mortal, your life ends here. And your meaningless existence with it."
What really got me stuck in the Temple Of The Ancients because I didn't get that there was a passage way you could walk through because of the confusing perspective. I ran back and forth trying to find a way but I just didn't see that what I thought was a wall was in fact a passage.
I've done that in Skyrim 😂 Just tells you no matter how hard the devs try to lead you by the hand, there's always gonna be that one moron (aka me).
Oh yes, the goat..and oh yes, the Driver Tutorial 😁 ..got stuck for ages.. but at San Andreas, I struggled more with the "Learning to fly" mission..
God of War: Ascension- Trials of Archimedes. That aggravated me enough I waited until new God of War was only $20 to get it.
I beat it before it got patched on the hardest difficulty. Took me foreveeeeer. That part was so weirdly difficult compared to the rest of it. Definitely a trial.
This trial lead me to discover the fast dodge roll technique.
The first time I played through Final Fantasy 7 was in 1998 when i was 8 years old. I don't recall having trouble with the temple itself, but holy heck do i have some bad experience with the Demon Gate boss. Rob is not kidding on that one. Even now i don't look forward to that boss.

My first play through was on computer version, and it totally removed the game design due to the fact that there's no port 2 for a keyboard
I remembered being stuck on him so long I quit the game. Then I bought it on the ps network for the PS3. Managed to do it when I saw a let's play with commentary on TH-cam lol
@@richardthompson790 This is why I always say that gaming in the old days are much harder and yet entertaining than it is now, because there's no TH-cam nor well established online forums to guide you when you are stuck. While I was not tested by Psycho Mantis, I was by the MGS VR missions, and they are no less a challenge to get through (the 10-consecutive-stages time-attack VR mission and the puzzles are particularly hard), and this isn't something that a friend who played the game can teach you by words, either. Nowadays, if you are stuck, just ask Google, and the rest is up to your skills. It became so much easier.
Hey I have one for this! I figured out the Spyro bit! It took me like 20 minutes to even see how to do and then about as long to actually do it but I did it and I’ve rarely felt so accomplished in a game.
When i'm stuck and I feel like i've legit checked every crevice of an area then i feel like it's reasonable to search a walkthrough lol
My friend and I figured out Psycho Mantis... I had been watching him play through most of MGS and also perplexed about how to beat Mantis. After a few tries, i remember just picking up the 2nd controller and when we realized both realized it - it was awesome. I handed it over to him and kept the story going after he beat. Felt great to contribute and like a team win. Such an incredible experience and really solidified how innovative metal gear was!

Broken Sword brings back memories, memories of the monkey islands games pre-playstation. After solving (by solving, i mean hunting down a walkthrough) some of those puzzles, the Goat puzzle seems rather simple.

I never got past the train mission in San Andreas, and I still hear Big Smoke saying his damn annoying line in my nightmares.
You just needed to jump over the train and start shooting those damn VAGOS. At least that's what 7 year old me did back in 2004. I recently discovered that wasn't the right way to do it. But I think my version is more cinematic.

That San Andreas mission was hard as balls when I first played it years ago. I like 22 or 23. I'm 37 and I played it again recently, took me 2 tries mostly because I took the stairs near the beginning of the mission. Now, the Red Baron missions are the stuff of nightmares.
I killed Mantis on my first playthrough without even realizing you can switch controllers. If you don't, every 20th or so hit of yours will land and do pityful damage. I beat him abusing that. It took me about 2 hours, but I did it, and I genuinely thought that was the intended way.

The dog at the gate of the docks from broken sword 2 the smoking mirror comes to mind. Couldn’t even complete the demo disc for ages before renting the full game. After this part, even the endgame was simple. The earlier ones didn’t have the cog pointer when you hovered over stuff so it added a bit of difficulty. Also final fantasy 7. Getting ejected into the desert from the golden saucer comes to mind many extra saves, endless linked screens, and powerful giant sand worms. From memory you had to do the screens in a certain order to escape. Such a great game. So exited for the remake.

I think ive never been stuck on more on a part of any game than i have on killzone 2. Right before Radec there is an arena you have to go through.. That arena is so unbelievable to get through even on the easiest difficulty

Spyro. That crystal mini game where you have to beat Hunter and prevent him from getting more crystals than you. I screamed blue murder over that one! And also, to a lesser extent, the ice hockey mini game

Shadow of the Colossus - climbing around the 16th (& final) Colossi's wrist very awkwardly whilst losing grip before bow & arrow shooting a target with very little time between the wrist flipping over completely again which causes you to lose grip dangling, leading to dropping or losing balance shooting or missing the following jump-falling to do all the climb up again, and again.
