This was band contest. They were forced to take part in it, because they had free rehearsal room offered by the city. Marko told this in a recent finnish interview.

These dudes harbored the true spirit of metal. Not giving a fuck what people think you're doing or what you're trying to do, just grabbing your instruments and belting out the electric wails of the dead and screaming your lungs out for the sake of Satan. So much respect for Beherit.
I saw them performing live last night. I almost started crying. I experienced feelings I thought never existed in me and the gig was something that cannot possibly be described. I still have this weird unexplained feeling long after the gig….
This is a clip from a band competition they were forced to take part in. Also this is from the golden era of Finnish black metal, bands like Beherit influenced greatly other bands in different countries such as Behemoth.
This is great, I love seeing old stuff like this! I still have an old issue of Dan Roger W's Abnormal Mag (I believe from Norway?) from that same year that has a rather non-informative interview with these guys. It has a bunch of great stuff from that time such as the guys from Old Funeral, Abruptum, etc... That zine is a cool piece of history when we were all a bunch of teenagers with pretty much no care in the world.
This is very interesting the reaction, my band played a battle of the bands in 1989 of a similar style we were fans of the growing black metal/death metal scenes and the teachers pulled the plug on our performance and tried to get us to stop anyway they could.
Northern Europe, they are very open minded, but Europe in general is so much more open minded than North America, in Europe you will always see metal shirts on the streets.
On the one hand, this is so utterly bad. but then on the other hand, it's pure raw energy from these kids trying to do something, which is to be commended and lauded. It's such a strange thing that black metal fans worship this primitive, undeveloped stuff. Fascinating. I like my "primitive" black metal to be a little more proficient, ala Blaze In The Northern Sky. But hey, whatever gets you off! It's also truly fascinating that whole scenes have been built up and devoted to worshiping stuff like this, which was created by children. I mean, hell... Mayhem were still teenagers when Deathcrush was released. And as people get older, they become 50 year old dudes worshiping at the altar of this super primitive stuff created by youth. Truly fascinating to me.
Gumbo72203 all of the great underground metal was performed by teenagers... usually before they became good at their instruments. eg Bathory, Kreator, Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Carcass.... the classic albums were recorded aged 16-20. it's a strange phenomenon; i truly believe that there's something unique about a gifted musician who is still relatively new at an instrument. the genius comes out, but there are mistakes and sloppiness. all of which are integral to that 'classic' sound. it's not something you can replicate when you become 'good' at your instrument
Coldacre It's usually the Scandinavian bands that start off at a young age. Dissection is another great example, Jon Nodtveidt was only 17 when The Somberlain was released.
I'm not disagreeing with you one bit, I'm 36 and I still realize how much the black metal mentality has shaped my life, a mentality created from what were essentially children, but I also love it! I also was never the biggest fan of the super raw stuff, more of an early Dimmu and Satyricon fan myself, but the older I get the more I do appreciate it.
This is a clip from original recording of a band competition in Rovaniemi: th-cam.com/video/QDGBOTy6fXM/w-d-xo.html. I think is much funnier to see Beherit with the other bands of the same competition.

In some places, this kind of attitude mean poser act.
