i wonder if people (metal heads that is) know how extraordinary this tape is. Obviously many do, but..... I am speechless. This is fucking outstanding. The exceptional thing about this tape apart that these are 17-19 years old boys writing and performing this music, is that my dearest Gylve is playing live, but also Ivar Enger aka Zephyrous, who people havent seen, more or less, for over 20 years. I am an 48 year old woman who has been into this stuff for a looooong time so I should know what Iam saying. There is no denying that Gylve Fenriz is a genius, and thats the reason why he is my alltime favorite with Pelle Ohlin as well (R.I.P). I am a black metal person but this is just sooo good. I actually get stomach pain when i see Gylve there.

It's so awesome getting to see how incredible of a drummer fenris is live. While I think he get's his fair share as a spokesperson, personality, and even as a bandleader, I think he really is underrated and underestimated purely as a drummer in his own right.
I think we all know he can be great when he wants to. It's just that through the entire late 90s and most of the 00s, he sounded like he didn't want to play drums at all. Picked up a bit on the last two records though!

I was a 14 year old little shit when I bought soulside journey in 1991 and it has been one of my favorite metal albums since. Fenriz was like the Neil Peart of death metal drumming during this period. Very creative beats and the riffs were so dark and haunting. Soulside is still my favorite darkthrone album. I only wish the goatlord material had a proper studio recording, but they were already heading in a more primitive direction later in 1991...
I got into DT at around 15 years of age, which I think it was the age to get into deeper underground metal. I heard Fenriz stating Neal Pearl influence (On the second disc commentary of Soulside Journey I think), so You got really spot on on that.
I am far from a metal head or a death metal head. But i'm totally blown away by how amazing this is. Also how normal and quiet they look when they come out and then they play and sing like that. Wow!

@@Blakullawitch Yes, but they changed the name. And they ditched the whole album. But you can find the rehearsal recording on Goatlord (with later added vocals by Fenriz) and Frostland Tapes (pure, instrumental), and it's not called Possessed there.

Kind of have to listen to Goatlord as "what it might have been", but fucking hell those riffs and songs (and drumming) is amazing. Perfect transition between the Soulside and Blaze styles.

I discovered Darktrone through hammy when I was about 12/13 as my dad was on his record label, absolutely loved them and wouldn’t share them with any of my friends haha they were all mine great to learn later how monumental they were 🙌🙌
WTF. Here in the US we could only spin the CD and dream about shows like this. Darkthrone's glorious Death Metal Days! This was one of the most inspiring moments of music, ever.

Maybe he meant they never played live since they turned to black metal. Even Burzum never playd live but there's a photo of him with the later stolen Westone Pantera and even a potato quality live video of him with Old Funeral. Everybody has a past and likes to brag about doing things first and before it was cool...

Very talented, I really enjoy their early death metal sound, it must be disheartening sometimes for the "new old school death metal" bands that are popular at the moment, to know deep down it was mastered back in 1990.
I'm assuming that is Dag Nelson on bass as well, I was pretty impressed with his playing as well. Bass playing really had a lot of character throughout the entire set.

I wish they would have continued this setup as well as what DarkThrone became, as a Death Metal side project. I remember I learned all their songs on guitar one summer, my band used to play some of their songs as warmup before practice ;) One odd thing: my tape has a better picture quality, but the sound here is better? But I don't have that hiss on my tape, which is strange. I can't remember if this was broadcast locally and I taped it off that broadcast? It was 26 years ago....I still have all Bootleg concerts that were taped back in those days. Come to think of it, I have many on DAT as well. Dunno why these haven't slightly tweaked/remastered and released yet?
