      Anthony Emanuel. Dave Allen was blessed with intelligence, charm, charisma, humour and the gift of the gab.

      He's up there with the legends. He also had one attribute most comedians don't.
      He was handsome to look at. Whew !!! ❤❤

    The Brian Boru joke (around 5:45) is one of the funniest jokes of all time. I saw it more than 35 years ago, and remembered it well enough to look it up and find it now. Genius. :)

    I was lucky enough to see him live many years ago as a student in London. The theatre was packed out and we could only afford to sit in the 'God's'...He came back after the break and gave us a good half hour extra time free to an ecstatic audience who wouldn't let him go...Never to be forgotten. Yet he never swore or was deliberately nasty to anyone😍😘🤗

    • @Tiger-Baby
      @Tiger-Baby ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gentle teasing. Wat different to malicious bullying.
      I long to go back. We had our own morals on how to treat a fellow human being. We kept our thoughts in house. I don't care if someone talks shit about me in their own home. Go for it. You pay to be there. Do what you like. But we were mostly polite face to face.
      Wasn't perfect. And a lit of things needed to change. But the people who detract from the racist problem, by squealing white racism, p*ss me off.
      Ugh. I would go back in a heartbeat

      Was there really no swearing in his live show? He was known for it.

    I knew from growing up that he was good but my parents weren't watching his shows. Now I realize that they didn't watch him because they didn't understand him and thought he was just making fun of people and religion, and they were religious. When I shake myself loose from them I found that he was not good but great. Now many years later, and unfortunately after his death, I realize that he was not just good, or great, but FANTASTIC!

      Just like they did with Python.
      I prefer this time in most ways. Obviously, not all. But, this was the edge of comedy back then. He was a great storyteller. Actor. Comedian. Fly in religions' ointment.
      The only good thing about my grandparents was they watched this on a Saturday night.
      But, some will wave the pc card, and, this was gentle ribbing. And at his own experiences, religion and school... I much prefer the teasing we used to indulge in. These days, someone can call you a c*nt just for saying you like or dislike something. Just because they want to argue.
      Isn't it so much better to laugh?
      I wouldn't kick off and go mental, should anyone rib me for being a sheep sha*ger, I'm from Wales, IF, it was a joke.
      I'd say something witty back. And BOTH of us would laugh.
      Nowadays it's 0-100 in aggression in a nanosecond.
      I miss it. We were less accessible, we had TIME, to do things without having an app to fecking remind us. When to go to bed, get up, eat, walk, what to think, and who social media deems worthy of gracing your news feed. We used to VISIT each other. Now we class a a hello on Facebook, akjn to actually seeing some in person.
      We were more sociable cos it was boring unless you were playing.
      Meh. I miss back then. And hate right now.

    He was amazing . . There are four that I just can't choose between. Dave Allen, Billy Connolly, Ricky Gervais and .
    Michael McIntyre. . Four legends of comedy. Irish, Scottish and English. What is it about Anglo Celtic men's humour. In all fairness I do like two American comedians, Dave Chappelle. I love how politically INcorrect he is.
    And still love watching footage of the only woman on my list the outrageously funny Joan Rivers

    I can't imagine anyone having the patience these days to actually sit still and listen to someone telling a long story / joke. Dave Allen was a genius before the word became overused in the 21st century.

    • @Tiger-Baby
      @Tiger-Baby ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Omg I KNOW! Our entire problem is our refusal to wait for things.
      We want everything right now.
      Endless boxes of shite punted out. By the thousands. Drawing out all the classic films we feel made a difference whe we watched them growing up.
      Parents too overworked to even have dinner together. It's so sad. I hate the progress in most areas. We didn't stop to enjoy technology that came out, before the next one is thrust upon us.
      And the next is a teeny bit, but not noticeably, different. Meaning, someone else paid to put yet another app, on as default and you never use it, but it fills up your phone with rubbish...
      I like control over my information. And that used to be done by just not answering the phone, staying in and telling everyone to say you're out...
      Now, there's no hiding. And if you DO keep your business private, they make shti up anyway. Can't win.
      Cliffhangers. Remember the excitement counting down the days to the next episode of something? Now, one episode comes out and the same night you can watch the entire thing.

      @Tiger-Baby ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lee-nh5bb oh yeah. The best thing about the Internet, and health issues, I've watched, am watching, all the classics I missed when busy reading Stephen King. I can't read any more, so shows and films are the best.
      I've got 12 Angry Men and the original Body Snatchers, coming up. The Dark Crystal got in the way though.
      I fully live in the past here. We were built to last. So we're whatever we bought.
      Gonna get my rainbow spandex and leg warmers on any day now. 😁🤣

    +qwyzl It takes talent, hard work and skill to be that silly all day, pretty much every day; you should try it! I doubt that you would survive even six months, let alone a career spanning over thirty years. I take my hat off to Allen and Peter Vincent, his co-writer. As an aside; why do you think that the best of US sitcoms are written by teams of writers (up to 12) rather than one or two? (Clue: because it is easier)

    • @Lee-nh5bb
      @Lee-nh5bb 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True what you say but remember that sitcoms are on every week for months, whereas Dave Allen at Large was only six shows a year.

    Political correctness has destroyed his type of humour, they are afraid of the truth, that is the real problem in this world, I would much rather die smiling than than die miserable.
