    OUR STORY SO FAR:
    We are Cory & Kristen Williams and in August 2014 we made the long drive from Southern California to Alaska to move into our new home in Eagle River. Here we’ve had the chance to explore Alaska, experience lots of wild events, meet lots of great people and endure the extreme temperatures that the north is known for. On December 20th, 2014 we got engaged after our Polar Plunge under the Northern Lights then later married by our favorite lake on May 23rd, 2015. Then on June 23rd, 2016 we had our first child. A baby girl named Chell.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    WHAT DOES "DudeLikeHELLA" MEAN?:
    "Dude" is me, Cory. I am the dude. "Like" is a joining word which is used to express similarities and "HELLA" is slang for "a lot" or in my case, "the greatest amount". So together, "DudeLikeHELLA" means "The best me I can be".

    0:47 I think it's more common for Europeans to use actual toasters/panini makers/grilled cheese (toastie) makers. I know I wouldn't be able to live without one. Making a grilled cheese in a pan just... doesn't cut it for me.

    There are a lot of suggestions here about the eczema. There are two clues people are leaving out: 1.) she's a very alert and responsive baby, and 2.) Daddy's instincts. Daddy may be on to something when he wonders if he may be overstimulating her. She has a very mild case, so it's unlikely it's an allergy or sensitivity, so perhaps it's stress. (Stress is not a bad thing, it just is.) Perhaps a little less stimulation? Not that you stop playing with her, she obviously looks for it and enjoys it, but follow your instincts, Daddy, and back it off a little. Give her time to process what exciting thing just happened.

    • @alexatkin
      @alexatkin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Do not forget that we only see the highlights, its not like he is stimulating her 24/7.
      I think with it being under her arms too, the suggestions of it being heat rash are more likely. I had that through my entire childhood.

      Eczema tends to be worst in skin folds where it is warmest and that is where there is the most moisture.

    • @alexfielding-smith153

      My eczema is genetic from my mum, I get it in folds like my knees and elbows, under my watch band and sometimes around my eyes and small patches on my shoulders. Nothing too serious, still treatable with 1% hydrocortisone cream. But I'm sensitive to detergents and some soaps (same as mum) and it always flares up with over heating and sweat in those areas that then get irritated by fabric. Stress can cause big breakouts as well.
      I'd suggest checking your detergents, making sure she's completely dry after baths and minimising the chances of her overheating.
      If that doesn't help improve things after a few weeks (because it takes that long for things to settle down) then maybe look at the pet dander, dietary stuff. But you need to give each aspect time to settle to really see if there is an improvement. Scientific method yo, change one thing while keeping the rest the same, the only way to figure it out

  • @WillowPen07
    @WillowPen07 8 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Eczema is usually triggered by food allergies/sensitivities. Pasteurized dairy is the most common trigger. I think the quickest way to clear it up is for Kristen to cut dairy or of her diet. If that doesn't work, try wheat, too. If that doesn't work, see an allergist or dermatologist.

    • @ChukchiCatori
      @ChukchiCatori 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      definitely what this person says!!
      Also, try feeding her a teaspoon (increase to a tablespoon after 2 weeks) of raw virgin coconut oil once a day. I have eczema and, when diet changes and such didn't work, I did this as well as use it as moisturiser. BEST DECISION EVER

    Hey guys, I know you will get a million suggestions but when my son was a baby had the same eczema, we accidentally found a solution...adding sea salt to his bath. We took a vaca to florida when he was a baby and he was flaring up badly. We went in the ocean and the next day, it was almost unnoticeable! From then on when he flared we added sea salt to his bath and he would go away. There are actually salt spas popping up now because sea salt is known to hlp with the skin and issuds with the lungs. I found that lotions and ointments made my sons eczema worse. Something to consider especially because its natural. Good luck!

    • @bew1972
      @bew1972 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I forgot to add that his eczema was the worst on his belly, wrists. thighs and lower back and was in fact diagnosed with eczema. We believe what actually caused it tho was a dairy intolerance...not an allergy but it did cause tummy issues as well. I wasn't breastfeeding so we switched formulas and when old enough gave him almond milk. I should also note that he's 18 now and has grown out of both the eczema and dairy sensitivity.

After his bath, he gets a coconut oil massage. lol I get the "expeller pressed" because I don't like the taste/smell of coconut and I like to cook with it. ;) My kids were both allergic to every laundry detergent I tried, except Cheer Free. My daughter had eczema from Chell's age until age 3. I tried coconut oil, breast milk, doctor's medicine, Aveeno eczema lotion, even hydrocortisone. What worked for us finally was the Costco brand of lotion and body wash. They are made mostly from plant derived ingredients. Her eczema cleared up quickly and luckily hasn't come back. Also, seeing your house "messy" makes me so happy! So refreshing unlike so called reality shows with their perfectly manicured homes.

    I'm sure you've already thought of this but it could be something Kristen is eating. When I saw Chell's stomach I was like: "Woah!" because that's how my son's "eczema" looked for awhile. It wasn't till he was about 5 months that we finally got his blood drawn and found out he was SUPER allergic to eggs. We cut that out and it helped his skin so much more! I'm not sure of Chell spits up like crazy, but that was something else my son did when I was eating lots of ice cream (a lot of ice cream contains eggs) and baked goods. Anyways, he still has issues with his skin and does have eczema and he's a year old. I also found his skin got MORE inflamed when we used Aveno products. We either use California Baby for sensitive skin or Tom's for sensitive skin. Anyways, sorry! being a Mom and blabbing too much! Love watching you guys, you're a blessing. :)

    Put some mayonnaise on the outside of the bread when grilling it...

    I've got a pretty good grilled cheese recipe. You use a little olive oil in the pan instead of butter, and in the middle is a thin layer of shredded cheese, some spinach, some thinly sliced tomatoes, and another layer of cheese. It's kinda hard to flip, so I would cook both bread slices at once, one with the cheese, tomatoes, and spinach, and the other with just cheese, and assemble it once both pieces are cooked. Once the sandwich is done, cut it diagonally and dip it in mozzarella sauce, guacamole, or whatever you like.

    I had it too as a child. The laundry soap is a good place to start I think. I can not use Tide at all. And fabric soft sheets got me too. Little more work with the liquid stuff but worth it. I think anything organic is best too. For the grilled cheese thingy, put very thinly sliced ham or turkey on with the cheese, yumm!

      When my little brother and I were babies we had to wear the store brand diapers because the other kinds would make us break out and the only detergents we can use are sun,xtra, store brands,gain which doesn't break us out but tide does and they are both made by the same company which I think is weird. Also could it be her baby wipes maybe the company changed them and it could be making her break out.

    Our daughter has similar issues, we even had the same trouble with cloth diapers. For her, finally figured out she was allergic to detergents, ALL detergents. The key for figuring that out was when she wore disposable diapers her skin under the diapers was fine, but where clothing touched her skin she had issues (especially in crevices, top of the feet and back of the hands). Going detergent free and instead to laundry soap along with baby aveeno eczema lotion brought the best results.

It won't go away completely but it will fade but as she gets older it will probably go away. Mine went away after I grew a little bit older. Then again all children are different. Good luck just try and keep a good positive attitude about it! Love your videos.

    My daughter, 4 yrs old, has eczema too. Hers is worse when she has any citrus or too many tomatoes. When I was nursing I cut foods and it didn't help, but once she started eating food herself it made a difference to cut citrus and tomatoes. Oatmeal baths and Eucerin help the most. And sometimes unrefined coconut oil. Heat and being upset bring it out more too. Happened with me since I was young too.

    Kristen, my mother suggests that you keep a food diary of everything you eat and see if there is a correlation with the flare-ups since you say some days it looks better or isn't as noticeable. And maybe something in the material that makes up the clothes she wears may have something to do with. Just a couple of suggestions from my mother. I, by the way, loved this vlog. I kept shaking my head during the grilled cheese "waffles" experiment and smiling. Only Cory-he's such a goofball! Chell is getting cuter by the day. So sweet! You look beautiful by the way, Kristen. Things you can make with a waffle iron: Cake waffles (follow instructions on box of cake mix), cinnamon roll waffles (canned cinnamon rolls), pizza pockets (split refrigerated biscuit and fill with sauce, cheese, mini pepperonis; seal shut)
    One of my favorite things is red velvet waffles with warm cream cheese frosting.

    I used to get eczema, and rubbing it can irritate it. So try leaving her clothes off for a little while see if that helps. Also, they make medicated baby powder you can put in places like her elbows to help with friction and keep it dry.

    I was born with eczema all over my body. My mom nicknamed me "baby alligator" because my skin was so rough. My mom kept putting the medicine from the doctor on my eczema, as well as lotion with no dye or scents twice a day. By the time I was a year old, it cleared up significantly. Today, I'm 24 years old and I don't have any patches anywhere. I only had it come back once a bit when I was 7. I lotion my skin after showering and sometimes use coconut oil before it gets too dry.

    I've learned that it's fairly common for babies to get eczema up until around 8 months, of course older children and even adults can get it too. I used to have eczema when I was a baby and I still occasionally get a flare up if I get too hot, usually in the creases of my arms and legs. So maybe it could be that she gets a little too hot maybe when wearing that suit she wears to bed. It could also be anything from the laundry detergent, fabric softener, clothing fabric, something in Kristen's diet etc.

    Cornbread mix in the waffle iron, to go with chili. Tater tots to make hashbrowns. Cake or brownie mix to go with ice cream. Give it a try!

    One of my sons has eczema flare ups like Chell's. It's at its worst when he overheats or if it's sweaty weather. Winter is rarely a problem. Look into wet wrapping. It works fantastic for us. I use medicated cream (whatever you have been prescribed) with a moisturising barrier over the top like the aver I you're using. Wrap it in a damp bandage then a dry one over top then dress as usual. If it works you can also buy stretchy seamless wet wrapping garments for eczema. I only discovered these recently. Far more comfy! Dress in natural fibres too for breathability.

    I had baby eczema as a baby and my mom said oatmeal based soaps and lotions really helped! Also, just having sensitive skin now, pH balanced products work well.

    I have had eczema since I was a baby.....what helps me the most is to let it dry out rather than too much medicine on it,when I keep it moist it gets much worse and mine is every where including my face.....it is doing better.....My allergy doctor told me that it can be caused by a zillion things,from consumables to stress and being anxious.....to things in the air....etc.....she is a beautiful baby girl and hopefully she will out grow this stuff.....I went almost 40 years between flare-ups,and yes I am older (think early 60's).....mine has always been stress related......wish you all the very best...love watching your family...:)

    I've had eczema my whole life, including when I was a baby. My mom put 2 different prescription lotions on me 7 times a day until I was old enough to tell her no. I used steroid creams and home remedies and nothing helped. The pain was immense and constant and doctors were unable to get rid of my eczema. It was the worst pain I've ever had to deal with for 21 years. It wasn't until I was older that I changed my diet to vegan and gluten free to help with my condition. I also make my own soaps and detergents with no perfumes or dyes. Not only did my eczema disappear and I no longer use any steroid creams or unhealthy prescriptions, but I have also noticed my spring allergies have disappeared and my quality of life has greatly improved. I don't go through life dealing with pain anymore. If my mom had known this when I was a baby and ate foods I wasn't allergic to, as well as fed me foods I wasn't allergic to when I started eating solid food, I might not have had to endure the pain I did. I implore you guys to look in to what types of allergies she may have and eliminate those from her diet and life. You'll save thousands on medical costs as well :)

    I know that struggle all too well. I am so sorry you're having to deal with the dreaded eczema. My sweet girl went through hell for months and months until someone finally listened to me. She ended up developing an allergy to cows milk. The drs kept telling me that it was something she would just have to live with, but I just refused to believe that. My advice is to first of all check with her dr about bleach baths. Usually 1/4 cup of bleach in a full bathtub is gentle enough for adults and toddlers, but I'm not sure about tiny babies. They worked miracles for my daughter. I had to stop breastfeeding, but an easy way to check for allergies is to pick one food, like milk/whey and eliminate it from your diet for a week or two and see if she clears up any. You can google the most common allergies and take one at a time out of your diet. Side note: if her stool changes to a jelly/jam consistency, that's a dead giveaway to a food allergy. As far as lotions/creams/ointments, aquaphor baby (I may have misspelled that) is awesome! I hope this was helpful in any way and that y'all are able to find relief quickly.

    I've had eczema for many years and it can be very stubborn. The only thing that worked for me was lavender oil with a carrier oil like almond oil. But I know you have to be careful with babies and essential oils. I was never able to pin the eczema cause on any food. I know when my skin got overheated or it was hot and humid it was worse for me. I'm glad it isn't bothering Chell. Sometimes the itch was awful when I had it. Aveeno also has a great baby eczema lotion that works on adults as well. Worth a try.

    Hi Cory and Kristen!
    Just wanted to share a eczema cream that works for my 5 year old daughter. We live in Anchorage so the winter is horrible for her eczema.
    We use First Aid Beauty: Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration.
    It's made without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, n has no fragrance.
    My daughter's eczema on her stomach, behind her knees, and thighs look and feel much better when she uses it.
    Give it a try. I highly highly recommended! You can find it in ulta or Sephora.
    Much love,
    The Baez Family

    My nephew had this rash problem - turns out it was caused by their laundry soap. Apparently most of my siblings had a similar issue when we were little. My mother had to buy Sunlight laundry bars and shred the bar soap with a fine cheese grater. I also had (and still have) issues with metal coming in contact with my skin (snaps on sleepers, zippers, buttons on jeans, watch backs).

    I know how bad you must feel about Chell's skin. My daughter had the same thing, and got worse with age. We had taken her to primary care, dermatology, and an allergist. And we learned through blood work and allergy skin tests that she had bad allergies. Like animals, trees, grass, oats and nuts. I'm happy to say with what to avoid and the right meds she has been clear for almost 2 years. Good luck.

    If it's sporadic, it's probably contact dermatitis. Which means it's something that's contacting her skin. Make sure you're using Dreft or compatible laundry detergent, Dove or Ivory soap to bathe, baby shampoo for hair, and lotions that don't contain alcohol (there's a ton that do). Moisture can be the cause too if they get sweaty around the band of the diaper. Kind of like diaper rash in other areas. We all have yeast on our skin and if you give it a warm, moist, dark area to multiply, it causes a rash. You'll figure it out. Sometimes it's just trial and error.

    I have eczema ever since I was 3, so I'm an expert in this topic unfortunately. The cold and dry air makes it worse, so maybe that's why little Chell is having it now. If she has inflammations on places where her skin touches her clothes, and not on her face, hands and diaper area, then the washing detergents can be the reason too, so try to use hypoallergenic ones.
