These guys were amazing from day-one. My roommate at Berklee College of Music was friends with John, John and Mike (1985-86). We had them over to our dorm room a few times... between practice that is! These guys got a practice room EVERY NIGHT. They were rocking out so hard and loud it was hard to use the adjacent practice rooms unless you played loud as well. You never ever saw John Myung without his bass (or air bass) practicing incessantly. Dedication to the art like I've never seen. It was obvious something big was happening with these guys.

Thanks for turning her to this song & to Dream Theater!! This album was in my walkman & or my boombox very often when I'd first brought it and it still holds up with most prog of today and that speaks volumes coming from a huge Rock fan like me and I love some DT and I'm glad that she's enjoying the ride and she is ready for more!! Thanks for some old school love and hope to hear from you soon!!

A Change of Seasons is an EP by progressive metal band Dream Theater, first released on September 19, 1995, through East West Records. It comprises the 23-minute title track and a collection of live cover songs performed at a fan club concert on January 31, 1995 at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London, England.
The title track was recorded at BearTracks Studios in New York and was originally slated to be released on the 1992 album Images and Words, but was instead re-recorded and released as an EP.[2] Although the song includes audio samples from the 1989 film Dead Poets Society (as well as quotes from the 1648 Robert Herrick poem, To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time),[3] the lyrics, written by drummer Mike Portnoy, were not inspired by the film. Instead, "it's about the cycle of life. Basically, I took a lot of personal incidents, like losing my mother and a couple of things that happened in my life, and I wrote them into the lyrics."[4] A Change of Seasons was also the first Dream Theater release featuring Derek Sherinian on keyboards.
Excerpts from the title track were used by NBC in a segment on downhill skiing during the 2002 Winter Olympics.[5]
Although the record is labeled as an EP, its running time of 57:30 makes it significantly longer than a standard EP, and even many LPs, including Dream Theater's first two albums. According to Portnoy, "It was important for us and the label for it not to be perceived as the latest studio record. That's why we tagged it an EP."[6]

Yes, this was Derek's first record with the band after Kevin left. The song dates back to their _Images and Words_ era, but it wasn't until '95 that they were able to record it (with improved arrangements and lyrics) on this EP.
Even after 26 years, it's still DT's best epic track, it never fails to make me shed a tear every single time I listen to it.

Every DT 20 minute epic song is the real deal, full of adventures, deep lyrics.
A change of seasons, although it's based upon a tragic event that involves the passing of Mike Portnoy's mother. I assure you Portnoy has the most deep and personal lyrics and he's put his soul into each melody.
Loved to see you enjoye this masterpiece.

You said you definitely want to listen to it again. So you should react to the Live Scenes 2000 DVD version. Soloing and vocals have more emotion. Rhythm section and keys improvise a lot. Portnoy drums like a man possessed, even hitting his head in complex time signatures. Rudess on keys with long hair. Keys in this version are probably their best. A mixture of Moore's emotion, Derek's edgy whackiness and of course Rudess' virtuosity. I'm sure you'll more than love this one.

Hi guys, where would we be without epic prog ? I remember in my teens in the 70's, grabbing an album because of it's cover then taking out the vinyl carefully [ in the store ] and checking the size of the tracks by the grooves. It was enough to take a chance and buy. The logic was, if a group can write a track 10 minutes or longer they must be good. Lol - This was brilliant and a great reaction. This track had so many elements reminding me of other groups & artists.....You should check out Derek Sherinian's cover version of Pink Floyds, "Welcome To The Machine" - Utterly mind blowing - You wont believe your ears ! - & the album it's from - "Pink Box - Songs of Pink Floyd" ..... Chris Squire & Alan White covers "Comfortably Numb" which is another unbelievable version that is soooo good !!!! but Derek Sherinian steals the show hands down ! Omg what an understatement !!!!!!! Don't let this pass you by. The track is jaw dropping ! Byeee ! X Jim

Dream Theater performed this song in its' original form during the Images and Words tour - it was originally planned to be on that album. Then, it was just under 20 minutes - some different lyrics/melodies/arrangements. I had a "bootleg" concert version of this on CD. Derek added some cool sound/ moments compared to the Kevin Moore original. Also, after James sings "I said I love you, goodbye... In the original version after the "ahhs" he sings "please don't go!" It's very emotional! I do like this studio version better overall - all things considered...

Back in the day, it was Metallica, Dream Theatre, Queesryche, and Megadeth for me. Early 80's to '88 went to 26 between the 4 groups. Amazing live performances from these heavy dudes with amazing vocals, axe picking, bellowing bass runs, and some of the best percussion from Portnoy! I love Lars from Metallica, but Portnoy wins hands down. James Labrie delivers flawless and emotional vocals for one helluva track! Dream Theatre still rocking to this day and sound just as amazing. For Queesryche try Silent Lucidity. Has the same feel as this song. Great reaction. Dream Theatre is bigger today than they were thanks to social media and reactors such as yourselves. Keep on keeping on! Saw them live with Anthrax headlining the concert. 1986 Colombia Mo. Rocking show.

Try Aryeon -- "Universal Migrator Part 1: Dream Sequencer"
Wait till you get to "2084" to hear the bass!
Also this one song is a good test track for a hi end home / auto sound system ..
    it test ALL the dynamics!

Nick demanded it, you get it: double thumbs up for Alexia. Right before I saw this video, I had listened to the big epic of the new album, the title track, another 20 minute song and now I can compare: The new music is good, but by far not as good as the old epics. The 90s were the best time of DT, band and James did their best. As I said before, a band, for example Rush, can record many good albums, but there will only be 3 - 4 phantastic ones at the end. The same with DT, Images & Words, Awake, Change of Seasons and Scenes from a memory are their best. Everything later was very good, good and not so good (self titled and Astonishing). The accident, that happened to James was a food poisoning at the end of 94, I'm sure, this was recorded before. In an interview 3 weeks ago with the Charismatic voice (another great reaction channel) he told the story: he literally puked his soul out, he was spitting blood, the doctors told him, to stop singing for at least half a year not knowing, if his voice would come back and DT had a tour coming up in early 95. So it's quite a wonder, that he continued singing pretty good, but IMO he did the best on Awake .. Voices, 6 a.m., The Mirror, Lie, all great songs. Originally Change of Seasons was written in 92, because DT wanted already Images & Words to be a double album, but the record company turned it down, so they made this album to introduce Derek Sherinian. I feel like Nick, not having heard this song for several years, but once you hear it , the memory is back. It makes me want to listen to more old DT ... Metropolis Pt. 1 for example ...

Like you Nick I haven’t listened to this in it’s entirety in a very long time. Thanks for this and enjoyed Lex’s reaction to it. Sincerely, no disrespect to Mike Mangini at all. I think is a fantastic drummer, but this reminded me of why Mike Portnoy is in my top 3 drummers of all time. He has such a feel for the prog Dream Theatre did then and makes it sound so natural and fluid to the music while still giving us fans of both prog and straight ahead metal drumming what we yearn for and idolize. Thanks a ton guys. Loved it

It would help if Nick did a little research instead of guessing. It's a simple matter of pulling up the band's official website. Their third album was Awake. Derek joined the band before the start of the Awake tour. James LaBrie had the food poisoning before A Change of Seasons was recorded.

This is a fun hobby not homework. So if i got one or two details wrong about your favorite band you should just chill a little. I have been listening to DT for over 25 years but I don’t know the names of their kids yet. Ill leave that to you.

      @@rudolfbecker4313 Hopefully this doesn't "delete" . . .
This is to give you an idea how close-nit the band was with Mike Portnoy, and how sad it was to lose him. And then the auditions started for a replacement all shown here, and a NEW era of Dream Theater would start:
      th-cam.com/play/PL2DU3TBNutEfMeG1MuXyZk4MHVIlfrDx6.html
But Mike Portnoy would go on to work with his "other" bandmates, and a slew of newer projects. The man is a workhorse!
And years later, hook-up with Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci for another "Liquid Tension Experiment" album.
      :)
