Part of Brooks' deal with Lucas when making this movie forbade any merchandizing (or Moichendizing) from it as George didn't want any competition to the Star Wars swag, and so any Space Balls items you may see are bootleg.
@@emichels If my understanding is correct, Mel Brooks had to make a deal with George Lucas to not do any merchandising in order to get the parody approved. So as kind of a joke, he just *filled* the entire movie with Spaceballs merchandise in the most blatantly obvious and in-your-face way. Hence the stupid things like Spaceballs: The Sheet.
I wore the VHS tape out watching this as a kid and I knew every word back to front. Not sure if I can confidently say that I still know it that well now but needless to say it's an absolute favourite of mine. This scene in particular is classic Brooks, punch after punch after punch. You get the first comb sight gag then you get Lord Helmet's megaphone gag then the afro comb gag to finish it off. Just as you finish laughing, you get hit with another laugh. It's genius.
The Black pingpong combing the desert with the afro comb is actor Tim Russ, known for his role as the Vulcan Lieutenant Commander Tuvok in Star Trek Voyager.

He said in an recent interview that he still gets people asking him to say that line.
"Why'd they give the black men the pick?" You know why. We all know why. The same reason as them responding, "we ain't found sh*t" Because well done jokes are funny, regardless of if they are racist or not.
Those jokes aren't racist. It's no different than showing a white guy with glasses playing with his action figures, a stereotypical nerd. It may be considered a trope, but the fact is that a lot of black men in the 80s did use hair picks.
@Rocket1377 Uh, no. Jokes about racial stereotypes are, by definition, racist. The difference is that back then, people didn't get all tushie troubled about it and try to cancel the people who made the joke.
The genius in this sequence IS its stupidity. This movie was never meant to be taken seriously. Heck, the way Mel emphasized "COMB THE DESERT!" was warning all by itself. I think just as many laughs came from Dark Helmet wearing that giant pith helmet! 😆😆😆
Helmet speaks with the megaphone to the guy's face, but then yells down to the guys on the sand. A lot of Mel Brooks movies have subtle jokes that I'm still finding today.
One of the worst and most obvious jokes from this fantastic movie. What's even worse, most people don't notice the REAL joke is Lord helmet speaking through the megaphone right into Sanders face and then shouting at the people far away!
The joke is pretty old now. Younger people pretty much won't get it because black dudes don't really sport picks sticking out of their 'fros now like they did in the 70s/80s.
That's why, Murder whistle, asia & BJ, octocool, and all the others that included the pick comb in the edit are the goats. Funny is funny. The reactors that censor every little thing they think might offend some random person are horrible to watch. Just a movie, just a joke, I watched a new reactor couple the other day do rush hour and they censored every back and forth exchange between jackie chan and chris tucker. Wasn't even a comedy when they were done editing. It was actually sad to see if they represent the next generation of reactorsand how censored everything was going to be to hide jokes that might offend someone
I'm curious to see a compilation of reactions of the climatic showdown from Speed where the bad guy literally loses his head trying to choke Keanu Reeves
Guess what, many people outside the US don't know what a pick is for. And some of the reactors were non-american. I myself learned that from this compilation, now knowing that's a joke within a joke.
Explain to me why you have an image of Mirandalorians in your thumbnail but didn't use her reaction anywhere in the video. Should fix your thumbnail, choom.......
Tim Russ: "I've been acting for 35 years, 143 credits on IMDB, I was on a long-running TV show, you might have heard of it, Star Trek? And all I'm known for is combing the desert and saying We Ain't Found Shit.."
Star Trek? I could have sworn it was iCarly...😂
i know him as the vulcan with a sense of humor. "Mr. Monroe you tactical approach was; shall we say ""tactless"". (from Voyager fps game)🖖

Spaceballs the bootleg!
Nobody mentioned that the guy used a bullhorn to speak to someone right next to him and then shouted at the others combing the sand.
In their defense, I had to watch Spaceballs more than 10 times before I caught every joke and I'm still not 100% certain that I caught all of them.
I noticed. 📣
@@Critter68 Fair enough. Point taken 👍
That's the beauty of parody movies. You can watch it twice and still not catch everything.
Which became my favorite part of the joke!

..........sorry, but the funniest part is with the pick and his response - "we ain't found sh**!"
That's Tuvok from Star Trek Voyager! Really!
Legend has it they're still out there combing the desert...and still ain't found shit. 🤣
35+ years and they aren't even halfway combing yet
So glad there are others who recognize Tim Russ. I didn't until I saw his name in the credits and connected the dots. LOVE this movie!
one of the best parodies ever made! it doesn't matter how many times you've seen it, it's always funny! 😂

Had this and history of the world p II on VHS, totally wore them down.
That's Tuvok from Voyager...
The actor said that after so many years the "we ain't found shit" is the reason he's recognized more
Yep! Tim Russ!
I always wanted him to say "We ain't found shit" reporting to Janeway after an away mission.
Yup, I was about to say...
@@LandSharkEatsUcame in to say just that I always wanted him to use that line on Voyager just as a joke
Thr literal humor of Mel brooks
No one mentioned how he uses the bullhorn to talk to the guy he’s standing next to, but then shouts to the guys out in the desert 😆
I always thought it was funny that the president was reading a book called "Don't blame me" with Nixon on the cover.
Upside down too 😂

That big a$$ pith helmet. Lol
Aww, the Homies had a great reaction to this joke.
"Comb the desert! No! Really?"
The 2 blondes in the beginning of the clip are the Double Mint Gum twins! The twins were always in the Double Mint commercials for years. ❤
@ First time watching - now you need to do the scene when Dark Helmet is playing with his dolls.
This was incredibly brilliant! The pun just works with how silly this is :D
Most of them cut out the best part of the gag because they don't want to offend the tech overlords.
Hilariously the guy who responds that they ain't found shi, is played by Tim Russ a actor who would make his career in Star Trek shows
Helmet speaks with the megaphone to the guy's face, but then yells down to the guys on the sand. A lot of Mel Brooks movies have subtle jokes that I'm still finding today.

Combing the deserts of Vulcan, then joining Starfleet!

Granted, Skroob could’ve also said ‘search the desert with a fine tooth comb’ and it still would’ve worked. 😆
One person sort of recognize Tim Russ/Tuvok Star Trek various characters.
Michael Scott hands the pick to Stanley and says, "here's yours, of course" and he replies "what do you mean, of course"
I was today years old when I realized that President Skroob's book is upside down.
Nobody noticed it was two black guys with an affro comb? :D
Some did. You can tell which of these reactors has black friends by if they notice the stereotype or not.

Because they’re at risk of getting an age-restriction put on their content by TH-cam. Blame TH-cam and its policies, not the reactors.
Half these reactors didn’t even seem to get the joke.

The videos are good. But you've gotta stop cutting it in the middle of the scenes. Some of them didn't even get to play out all the way.
So a few of those reactionaries didn't include the funny pick portion. Are they suffering from a TH-cam video fear posting or a social fear?
