I was 8 years old when this movie came out and it was my entry into the series. It captured my imagination then and still holds an important place in heart. So many of the outlandish concepts in this film that get criticized today are exactly what made it so cool as a kid. I was fascinated by the half human/ half alien Ripley. She was basically a superhero. In the same year as this film we got Batman & Robin, another panned outlandish movie. Similarly, as weird and disturbing as this film is, I really feel like it’s target audience was kids my age. I've always liked this one, although it probably helped that I was already familiar with Jeunet before I saw it (City of Lost Children is brilliant). And the cast is stacked with a lot of my favorite character actors, so I can at least enjoy their performances.
I remember reading that Whedon had said his script had been truly canted, turned into something he didn't totally recognize and wasn't necessarily all that proud of, in the end. I loved the crew of the Betty, and was one of many thoroughly unsurprised with Firefly's parallels. Whedon's gonna Joss. For better or for worse (as we have come to discover). I do love the look of this one, and the individual performances. Much is made, even with a script as weak as this was. And so fun was had in the watching :) It's hard not to love our xenomorphs.

You're a good man jumping on this grenade of a movie for the rest of us. I'm curious enough to watch what's different about in this youtube video but not curious enough to actually watch it myself.
After seeing how bad (in my opinion) the franchise could get in Prometheus and Covenant, I got a new found appreciation for Resurrection... It's not perfect, but pretty entertaining in it's own right
There's a great Alien Resurrection fan edit out there called Alien Rebirth. It's much closer in tone with the first two movies and the new opening credits is straight out of Alien.

They missed an opportunity in regards to Ripley's memories...when seeing the little girl she could of said 'Newt' in a whisper....only to have the doctor say 'no....its a child'...
I recently did a rewatch of Resurrection after watching Alien Expanded. I did skip from just before 'the birth' to just after the end of the fight. The acting and character development was enough to tell a great story. Thank you for doing this dive! The picture of the girl was Newt and/or Amanda- regardless worth a few tears. I'm glad they left out the WalMart line. I like the changes to mercs' intro scenes, extending the scene with Purvis had real nice touches, the scene with the aliens gracefully navigating the water will always be one of the best scenes to me, adding the memory of Newt was definitely an improvement, and the last scene was ok but ending in space looking down on Earth gives a sense of hidden hope and leaves more to the imagination..
This is a great breakdown. I just watched the theatrical recently, and was wondering where some of these scenes (like the Wal-Mart line) that I heard about were. I appreciate this insight, thanks.
I'm glad that the Titan Books used the alternate ending of this movie as how Weyland Yutani came back into power and why a lot of people fled Earth for other planets.
I will always have a soft spot for this film because it was one of the first 18 certificate films i ever saw and it was the first Alien film i ever saw. I still remember being obsessed when it was in cinemas rewatchibg the trailer on vhs
Great vid (as always) - thank you. That scene at 13:05 (the Alien escape scene where one of the Aliens is killed so they can escape) always reminded me how wrong Ripley was in Aliens: "You know, Burke, I don't know which Species is worse - you don't see them f*ucking each other over for a god damn percentage". I don't know if the Alien who got killed so the others could escape was a noble sacrifice, but it did look in some distress as it was being mauled by the other. That being said, I do still think we are the worst species.
In Ripleys defense, it wasn’t for a percentage. It was, as you said, so they could escape. But whatever brother😊 it’s a MOVIE, a work of fiction. Right? Right?? And they’re ALIENS in a MOVIE. We don’t understand, subjectively, their values because they’re ALIENS. And it wasn’t written into the screenplay that we should. Because they’re aliens. ALIENS. And who knows, maybe they COULD have some kinda xenomorph economy and maybe, MAYBE when they killed our hole-maker(that’s all it was, in all seriousness) it was to increase their overall profits for whatever weird bug business they were involved in. If that IS true, then the two that escaped CLEARLY can’t trust each other and should be watching over their shoulders and (do they sleep? Have eyes? They do, I remember now…) sleeping with one eye open lest they become a statistic…being compiled by some xeno-statistician see where this is going??? Ridiculous. (I’m just poking fun at you a little😊sorry, I went a bit too far….damn. We ARE the worst species)
While I do not dislike Alien: Resurrection, it is my least favorite of the original quadrilogy. The story strikes me as being similar to many of the old Dark Horse Aliens Comics. I always get a good chuckle with the Walmart comment. Most of the other edits do not add to the movie. Not like the sentry gun scene in Aliens or the additional Golic scenes in Alien 3.
I think this movie could have been a great addition to the franchise if a few things were different. They should have stuck with the really creepy atmosphere and vibe instead of mixing in goofy stuff, maybe they did that on purpose so it wouldnt be too dark, but obviously the goofy stuff didnt go over too well. They had some great practical effects in that movie, but the cgi was kinda bad. They should have kept that new born in the dark more as well, that thing would have been a lot more creepy if it wasn't so well lit as soon as it was introduced, sort of like they did it with the new born from romulus. I wish there was a bit more of an explanation as to why there was almost no army guys on a massive military ship and the few that were there just evacuated right away instead of trying to fight back. Also, it probably would have been better if our main cast of characters weren't total pieces of human garbage, Im all good with anti heros, but kidnapping people in cryo sleep and selling them into what would be certain death leaves them with little room to have any redeeming characteristics.
I like the idea of them spending time talking about organisations and incidents from previous films. The biggest obstacle towards Ripley seeming like Ripley in this film is that she barely seems to reflect on her history or any past characters. It makes me wonder how much she even remembers from her past life.
Personally rate Alien Resurrections above Aliens 3, it doesn't take itself as dark as it probably should and serious moments are undercut with a joke (typical Josh humor) but the practical effects are arguably the best of any of the films, how it plays into the Alien Life-cycle in a neat ways while staying true to the lore, the set designs and Signore acting are all so damn good and it was refreshing to see characters in universe comment on how badass she is. None of usual doubt and skepticism you get in every other film up to this point. Also the Newborn is also still the most disturbing thing out of the entire franchise to me, its a disgusting hybrid between the two but the pure humanity and wetness to its eyes and infant calls just put it above anything else. Its not a perfect film by any stretch, almost none of the CGI holds up, previously mentioned jokes undercutting serious moments, the lighting is too warm and brightly lite in places and how they used the Queen for the actual film was just a waste. But that is all I really have to say in terms of negatives for the film.
I LOVE this flick. Pure comic book tounge in cheek action. ALL the Alien comic book tropes. Mad scientist, check. Off grid black ops military research station check, androids, check. space pirates, check. And RIPLEY!!
The idea of the Clonation for the Xenomorph and Ellen Ripley was Interesting (a Little Goofy but Amazing and Badass as Well) and the Action scenes were Amazing with some Heartbreaking Moments (the Newborn Hybrid Death it seemed Scared, Sad and in Great Pain Being Expelled from the Airlock it made me soo Sad but there was no way he would Gotten Along with The Betty Crew). Ps Amazing Video as Always and if must Say the Special Edition was More Emotional (since the Mention of Newt by Drawing and Some Memories from The Previous Movies) but if ya’re someone simple the Theatrical Version is Better.
I have a lot of fun and respect for this movie. It's my favorite of the series but I like them all, for different reasons. Every installment has its own look and feel and I think that is what keeps them popular and interesting. Ridley has gone back to the more haunted ship type of story but the newer iterations don't have the same feel or star power. After the dark and gritty A3, this was a welcome relief. Still plenty violent but with more fun and interesting characters and certainly better dialog😂😂. It's a movie not trying to take itself too seriously, while providing enough action and suspense to warrant multiple viewing. I could pop 3 or 4 in ,most anytime.
Not on the same level as the first 2, but I always loved this movie. It has a lot of interesting moments. The underwater scene still annoys me because of its unreality. Like, seriously, I can understand Ripley making that trip because of her superior DNA, but I doubt the others' lungs could withstand so long under water. On other note, I like that people now, with the release of Romulus, compare the Newborn to the Offspring and try to see which one is the most powerful. Personally, I'm team Newborn, but...Could make an interesting video.
Regarding Ripley 8 and the picture of the young girl. Would it be Newt or Amanda, or a combination of the two that triggers the melancholic reaction? Speaking as a parent, I don't think I could elevate someone whom I only knew for a few days (even taking into consideration what they both went through) over my own child, even if the surrogate was a direct reminder of said child. The mother/child theme is further explored with the newborn which is again evidence she has not lost that maternal instinct and that Ripley still misses her daughter, badly. So whilst her relationship with Newt was intense, although brief, it is the memory of her own flesh and blood which triggers that reaction.
Still not a huge fan of Resurrection, but I recently rewatched and had to say, I had more fun than I remembered. Script wasn't great but premise was interesting and reminds me of the old comics in a silly way, but it flowed together well.
I prefer the theatrical release. Generally I thought the movie was alright but agree it's the weakest of the first four movies. I also wasn't keen on the new xenomorph design but it's all subjective. I know friends who loved the change. thanks for another great video.
I have quite a soft spot for this entry. The characters are actually quite fun to me, I really like Ripley 8. As far as the call backs are concerned, they didn't take away for me personally as they make sense in this movies' case since a lot of them come directly from Ripley 8 since she seems to be experiencing memories of her past in bits and pieces triggering emotions she doesn't quite understand. I think it really works well for her character development. The aliens are pretty well thought out too with how they look and act since they are an amalgamation of Ripley's DNA and their own. And as far as the Newborn is concerned, I really don't see the absolute dumb side to it, it makes sense to me. The Xenomorphs are a mystery, they are perfect organisms that can adapt to their situation and surroundings, so for something like that to happen with the queen having a child is pretty wild but cool in my honest opinion. I would have really like to see where the sequels went with this direction, the humor was a bit weird but that could have just been to break the ice a bit whereas the later sequels could have delved into darker territory and horror.
I saw this on the big screen back in 1997. I had only seen the others on TV/vhs until then. I had very mixed feelings at the time and I have watched it very rarely on home video over the years.
When I was a teenager, I hated this movie for ruining my enjoyment of the first three alien movies (I still enjoy alien3 to this day). Now I appreciate how weird and silly resurrection is. It's definitely an extremely unique movie with some cool visuals and ideas.
I never even knew there was an extended version of Alien Resurrection until recently. In terms of the theatrical version, I think it's been close to 20 years since I've watched it. For whatever it's worth, I personally preferred Resurrection over Alien 3, though if I watched both movies now, that ranking could change, for all I know. It's been about the same number of years since I've watched Alien 3, now that I think about it.
I’ve always rather liked this film, at the time I felt it helped fix the mess Alien 3 had made and put the franchise back on track… and then we got no sequels. 😢 The scene with the Ripley clones was really chilling, definitely the highpoint of the movie in terms of unique ideas. I would have liked to have seen the original white spider Newborn fight in a junkyard on Earth for the ending, but it was probably beyond CGI technology of the time without spending much more than they usually spent on Alien films. The disappointing Newborn design aside, my only real problem with the film are the Aliens. They’re just covered in buckets of slime and drip gunge everywhere. Their fingers are lumpy three fingered things instead of the usual six or seven fingers the xenos normally have. I think the filmmakers were trying to imply that, like Ripley‘s mixed DNA, these cloned Aliens have human characteristics, but I just think all the slime was unnecessary and reduced the Aliens to mindless, slobbering Hollywood monsters instead of the “perfect life form”.
The longer scene with Annalee Call & Ripley 8 (the one where Ripley spoke about a little girl she tried to save in the past) also established that Call has changed the course of the Auriga to an "uninhabitated quadrant" on Earth, as well as the ship's deceleration systems being deactivated.
Its also possible that Ripley reflected on Newt and her daughter... who was also a little girl when she died in terms of Ripleys perception after being in Cryosleep
Three thoughts: 1. I think it’s easier to appreciate Rez as something that happened in the Alien universe, rather than a fourth installment in Ellen Ripley’s character arc, which ended in the fiery furnace of Fury 161. It feels more satisfying as something closer to The Mandalorian or even Rogue One-‘Resurrection: An Alien Story’. 2. Scott won’t do this, but the best way to conclude the Prometheus prequel story is to set it after Alien Resurrection, with Ripley-8 on a Heart of Darkness-type collision course with David-8 on Orgae 6. The two characters have more than their parallel naming schemes linking them. Thematically, Ripley 8 is the dialectical synthesis of humanity and the xenomorph-a superior creature in every way to David 8’s Nietzschean pretensions, born of monopoly capitalists like Peter Weyland. I wish it would happen, but I doubt whether Scott has ever seen Rez. 3. I liked Rez a lot more after watching Firefly and Serenity, which are better executions of the whole idea animating Whedon’s screenplay. I also like the numerous Easter eggs tying both series together. That might make an interesting video some day, Alien Theory. As always, outstanding work. Appreciate your creative passion and output, and I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful end to 2024 and a better new year.
Myself, I prefer the Special Edition...with hangups. I agree the opening was more of a joke then anything, so there's that. I also thought the bit with Wren speaking before Ripley 8 sorta knocks the pacing a bit, but I disagree on certain spots you pointed out. I don't know if this is because of the military bits in my family but the addon to Elgen and Perez talking where Perez explains the ground rules to the pirate makes sense. I think the addon to the surgical removal of the Queen at the beginning is interesting as it tells the audience straight out of the gate this isn't normal Ripley, the second bit I actually think feels like a version of seeing Big Chap throughout the first film, where the Xeno in Ripley is testing it's limits, like a newborn predator testing it's cage and it's limits. The small bit with DeStefano acting like a FNG in the lead-up to the big swim reminds me of some of my grandfather's stories from his time in the Army...so again that could just be me. All in all, I think this is interesting. Thank you for the discussion.
Love your vids man- resurrection is no worse or better than the fantastic dark horse comics in the 90s- in that sense the movies great but if you watch it straight after alien one it will blow your mind lol
Interesting fact, the extended surgery scene was also in the comic adaptation which is also based on the book, for years I thought it was a mandela effect. The scene in the comic was more graphic as described by Alien theory, I remember the bloody broken arm so vividly.
Resurrection was meant to be be funny... Joss Weedon would add humour into the dialogue and Jean Pierre Jeunet is a maker of black comedies - A City Of Lost Children is one. It was never trying to capture the mood of Alien or Aliens... I think one reason why they made it so far into the future was to distance itself from the consequences of the original movies, allowing it to be more a mixture of light and dark, a more traditional cinema horror (typical of the 70s) rather than the more dystopian misery of the original alien worlds
Love that you’re still going strong

I remember reading that Whedon had said his script had been truly canted, turned into something he didn't totally recognize and wasn't necessarily all that proud of, in the end. I loved the crew of the Betty, and was one of many thoroughly unsurprised with Firefly's parallels. Whedon's gonna Joss. For better or for worse (as we have come to discover). I do love the look of this one, and the individual performances. Much is made, even with a script as weak as this was. And so fun was had in the watching :) It's hard not to love our xenomorphs.
"You'd have to be very familiar with the theatrical cut to notice some of these additions...and I happen to be" what a statement, what a delivery lol
Great video! I like that you didn't edit in the audio for *all* the new dialogue, only the most interesting bits
The standout character for me was Elgin....I wish we could have seen more of him or explored his back story.
he was killed off way too soon
One of my favorites in the franchise. Watched it a LOT as a kid.
Always appreciate your critique/analysis of the films that literally made me into a sci fi fan. Keep up the good work my friend!
You're a good man jumping on this grenade of a movie for the rest of us. I'm curious enough to watch what's different about in this youtube video but not curious enough to actually watch it myself.
Thank you for the video
After seeing how bad (in my opinion) the franchise could get in Prometheus and Covenant, I got a new found appreciation for Resurrection... It's not perfect, but pretty entertaining in it's own right
I wasnt even aware there was a special edition for this film. Good stuff, Alien Theory.
I want an Alien Resurrection sequel! 👏👏👏
Its a great movie. It didn't take itself too seriously and went in a different refreshing direction.
Thank you for another great video. Saw your struggle on X to get it up. Happy to see it here now.
Hi! You’re really creating something remarkable.
There's a great Alien Resurrection fan edit out there called Alien Rebirth. It's much closer in tone with the first two movies and the new opening credits is straight out of Alien.
Oh my !
Where can I get my hands on a copy ?
Bitchute? Torrents? Please let me know.

Does this version have the extended ending on Earth with Call and Ripley 8 in France ?
That sounds pretty interesting, I think of the tone was slightly adjusted this movie would work a lot better
Yeah, i cant understand the hate for this one, i thought it has a great scifi vibe
It’s a fun movie
Mostly the tonal mishmash. It was a silly black comedy which is totally out of step with the rest of the series, even AVP
Been waiting on this. Thanks!
I remember going with my parents to see this in theaters after Thanksgiving dinner. Wasn't the best choice lol
most excellent review and comparison. Thank You ! ! ! !
Awesome Vid!
Thank You very much for Your Work! Greetings from Germany!
Oh my god! 27 years! Man this makes me feel old. I was 17 when this released. 😳
Thank you for sharing with us fans!!!
Still 1 of my guilty pleasures.
As for my opinion on "Alien: Resurrection"?
Well, to quote Brad Dourif it's a "Beautiful, beautiful baby butterfly 🦋."😏lol.
Agreed.
Thank you for this new episode 🎉
I like the idea of them spending time talking about organisations and incidents from previous films. The biggest obstacle towards Ripley seeming like Ripley in this film is that she barely seems to reflect on her history or any past characters. It makes me wonder how much she even remembers from her past life.
This was the first Alien I saw in theaters. Although not the best of the series, it still holds a special place in me
Personally rate Alien Resurrections above Aliens 3, it doesn't take itself as dark as it probably should and serious moments are undercut with a joke (typical Josh humor) but the practical effects are arguably the best of any of the films, how it plays into the Alien Life-cycle in a neat ways while staying true to the lore, the set designs and Signore acting are all so damn good and it was refreshing to see characters in universe comment on how badass she is.
I grew up with the original movies after AVP came out, and I loved them all, and I think I prefer the theatrical version.
I LOVE this flick. Pure comic book tounge in cheek action. ALL the Alien comic book tropes. Mad scientist, check. Off grid black ops military research station check, androids, check. space pirates, check. And RIPLEY!!
Intriguing film I’ve personally turned around on it as I’ve gotten older, it never dawned on me the differences this film has
The idea of the Clonation for the Xenomorph and Ellen Ripley was Interesting (a Little Goofy but Amazing and Badass as Well) and the Action scenes were Amazing with some Heartbreaking Moments (the Newborn Hybrid Death it seemed Scared, Sad and in Great Pain Being Expelled from the Airlock it made me soo Sad but there was no way he would Gotten Along with The Betty Crew).
Ps Amazing Video as Always and if must Say the Special Edition was More Emotional (since the Mention of Newt by Drawing and Some Memories from The Previous Movies) but if ya’re someone simple the Theatrical Version is Better.
Always enjoyed this film, i saw it first day at the cinema, as i did ALien3 , and have loved them all ... oh and great video mate
For me the theatrical cut ist perfect. I'm eagerly waiting for the 4K version.
jeeze, i had no idea there was a special edition of Alien Resurrection. needs to go find it
I have a lot of fun and respect for this movie.
Love this movie.
I'm a simple man, I see an alien theory video and I upvote it.
Still not a huge fan of Resurrection, but I recently rewatched and had to say, I had more fun than I remembered. Script wasn't great but premise was interesting and reminds me of the old comics in a silly way, but it flowed together well.
I really like Alien Ressurection. It had an well balanced humor added and was highly entertaining overall. (both versions)
I prefer the theatrical release. Generally I thought the movie was alright but agree it's the weakest of the first four movies. I also wasn't keen on the new xenomorph design but it's all subjective. I know friends who loved the change. thanks for another great video.
Let's go, always great to see more AT!
I love all the Alien movies. Of course I love Alien more than Resurrection, but I still love them all.
I have so much love for resurrection is the alien baby in the end that messes things up for me it was like WTF oh come on.....
I saw this on the big screen back in 1997. I had only seen the others on TV/vhs until then.
I had very mixed feelings at the time and I have watched it very rarely on home video over the years.
I love the alternate ending. And the score.
When I was a teenager, I hated this movie for ruining my enjoyment of the first three alien movies (I still enjoy alien3 to this day). Now I appreciate how weird and silly resurrection is. It's definitely an extremely unique movie with some cool visuals and ideas.
Theatrical opening was with the bug/straw. Also every other comparison is backwards. I was there, watching it in the theater.
That's impossible, I don't think that sequence was even completed until the quadrilogy came out- but I think you're joking, LOL
liar.
No, I saw this as well. Looks like the UK release may have been different?
(0:34) I love this outtake. Sigourney rocks. 😎🤘☮️
The longer scene with Annalee Call
& Ripley 8 (the one where Ripley
spoke about a little girl she tried
to save in the past) also established
that Call has changed the course
of the Auriga to an "uninhabitated
quadrant" on Earth, as well as the
ship's deceleration systems being
deactivated.
Its also possible that Ripley reflected on Newt and her daughter... who was also a little girl when she died in terms of Ripleys perception after being in Cryosleep
Just watched it last night and still great
Three thoughts:
Annalee Call is so cute.
You know a horror movie is bad when people laugh in the theater. 3 was much darker and more suited to the tone of the series.
