When cleaning the rust out of my project motorcycle gas tanks, I do something similar. But I use short deck screws instead of marbles. The screws get into the nooks and crannies better, are more abrasive, and can easily be removed with a magnet. I follow that with a good flush out and new fuel filter. Works great, as long as the tank doesn't have any rust-through areas.
Been looking for good pics showing all of the mount locations for the under seat jack holder and associated hooks. Took a screen grab of your interior. Thanks man

You said ATF would clean/loosen rings... best trick I ever did was AJAX powder, it also does a great cylinder honing job too! My vehicle smoked out the neighborhood but ran clean after half a can of AJAX. I immediately changed the oil, and again a few days later

Like in your truck, these engines can be abused and have practically no maintenance and then fire right up in winter. Even if they have small issue like yours, they can be fixed with simple means, like in your case. The Thriftmaster don't get no respect but it's one of the most durable motors in history.

Just replace the solenoid on that old one so it engages. Way cheaper than buying a whole new starter
