They actually said in an interview that they were straying from the created players and customization because they listen to the fans and the fans don't really care about created players or customization..... The hell? Most people who have played from the beginning of SR to the current end have all noticed and disapproved of the loss of control we had. 😫
That is something said by a writer at Polygon, a website I absolutely despise for their mean spirited (and sometimes vicious) attack articles, strawman write ups, sensationalism, and lack of professionalism. You are mentioning a quote from the writer, and not from a developer.
The first two Saints Row games is based around contrast. The contrast comes from the seriousness of the world and the sillyness of the player. This is the root of most comedy, subverting expectations. Volition was trying to tell a story about betrayal and loss, while the player wears a bikini and has pink hair. That's why customization was great, it allowed the player to create that contrast. Volition allowed the player to be crazy through various activities and gave them freedom. Now on to the next point: Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas. There is just so much similarities between the GTA and Row series. The main one is that in San Andreas you are also put into a serious situation of betrayal and loss while giving he player a bit of customization and a lot of freedom. I think one of the funniest moments in SA was flying over Grove Street in a jetpack. The cutscene that followed wouldn't mention it of course, like it was the most normal thing in the universe. Now the point people won't like: the comedy in Saints Row and SA were mostly unintentional. There is no way Dan Houser wanted to story of SA to be a comedy. Just go and read the plot summary of GTA:SA on the GTA wiki and then the Saints Row 1 plot, it shares the exact same tone. There is definitely a contrast between the story and gameplay of both SA and SR. The developers completely misunderstood the reason why people liked the first two SR games though. The only reason they came up with is "well, it's because it's silly!". So cue Saints Row 3, 4 and Gat out of Hell. And now Agents of Mayhem as well. This is the reason why they are calling Saints Row a comedy with action. It the exactly the same as Tommy Wiseau calling "The Room" a dark comedy. Just as much as Samurai Cop was meant to be a comedy. Maybe "Samurai Cop" is the closest thing to Saints Row in its intention. Matt Hannon (samurai cop) admitted in the Red Letter Media interview that just wanted to see what he can get away with as Samurai Cop. The Iranian director Amir Shervan had an almost alien way of writing and directing a film. Serious and sincere I believe though. Remember that this is Volition making the best game they can make and delivering what they think people want. It's crazy and zany. Overwatch/Battleborn/TF2 style. Cliched characters, sassy latina! There is a fourth wall breaking joke every two seconds. Some marketing exec or producer thinks that this what people want. I am not trying to make a case for or against Agents of Mayhem. What I am saying is that believing that the real Volition is hiding in the shadows, waiting to release SRV that'll be exactly what the SR1 and 2 fans want, is fallacious. Because it's against everything they've said and done after SR2. The footnote of the longest comment in history is that I believed that they will return to their roots after the massive success of GTAV. If they continued the style of SR like it was in SR1 and 2, they might've provided the world a GTA which allows you to do more and be more free. Imagine a GTAV like game (even if it has half the quality graphics and game world size), but with high amounts of customization and much more activities. It would've been very successful. The success of GTA did not motivate them to go back to their roots however.
That is why Saints Row V has so much potential. With new technology and the right treatment a new Saints Row game like 1 and 2 can be amazing. If they will not go this route however, I would at least love a remaster of SR2. I feel with updated graphics and certain gameplay revisions, Saints Row 2 can finally have the definitive version that it deserves.
Optimus Chief, I'd much rather a PC port of the original Saints Row, cuz my Xbox got redringed. It's one of the old ones and I can't really afford a fix or a new one. Of course, with a PC port, a remaster for it would be bound to be made as well. But for me, it would be a mere bonus.

As for the humor, I think SR has always been more of a 'playing with irony' thing with humor in terms of its subverting expectations as its humor. Take the scene where Mr. Sunshine and the General look for Veteran Child in the record store, and Mr. Sunshine tells everyone to get out, but nobody does anything. A big guy with a machete and crime lord doesn't scare people until he kills a guy jamming his music or how the game mocked itself from how bad Stilwater was, yet people are still willing to live there. That was funny. The writers after SR2 seem to lose that understanding of how their humor worked. It wasn't this overt in-your-face random nonsense of Nyteblayde, Anime and phallic jokes that people see SR today to be that made it funny. When people said "SR never meant to be serious" in the context of SR2, it was that they never took the bad things they did or the adult themes seriously on an ethical level. Like how the boss says they like panda meat or Tanya's STDs or how they treat the black market like any old convenience store for criminals. SR's humor always made things that looked bad in real life look silly because of how awkwardly casual with it the characters were. In SR4, none of that exists. You get mostly stupid pop-culture and this constant push for the Saints to be memes. You get stupid musicals and William Shakespeare listening to Nursery Rhymes as humor. AOM definitely got worse from how extremely generic the characters were and how much more millennial the humor is. Volition used to be so much better than this. Aside from Murderbrawl, nothing in SRTT realy fits the humor of SR2's concept. I really don't like Professor Genki or the Deckers for that reason.
I got banned on Volition's twitch because I actually had constructive criticism on Agents of Mayhem and was concerned about the game as a fan, apparently the moderator took it as a threat and perma-banned me. Definitely not getting the game now, unless it's used.
This makes their TH-cam, Twitter, and forums being almost fully devoid of criticism for AOM make sense now. Because before I couldn't understand why in the hell that was so, but most of the comments on non Volition-controlled videos and articles were so negative about the game.

I've been discussing the game and providing constructive criticism lately, and I was never censored or told off. and IdolNinja openly has a policy of allowing any criticism on the forums, as long as people are respectful. I feel like you are spreading misinformation with saying that, especially since there has been criticism on their official social networks, what you are saying is completely false. I also saw some good discussion going on in the twitch replay feature of their AOM stream, and I didn't see any moderators threatening or telling people off the entire stream?

That makes me sad, especially with how shallow a lot of the critique is, I have trouble finding constructive responses, and people don't explain why they dislike it. It frustrates me, because I think this has a lot of potential, and I love having new IP's and more innovative gameworlds, and I feel people are really pushing it to say that it's too much like these other games (especially since there is only like 2 or 3, so a good game in that regard wouldn't be a bad thing at all even if it was true), with overly the sparest of similarities, not to mention those being approached in a unique way. Plus Volition isn't a large studio and can't afford to do everything at once, I would much rather developers focus on something and do it well, rather than make a huge shallow experience with lots of features with a lack of polish and effort.
The part of this that I think depresses me the most is that I am no longer the boss. I'm gonna miss blowing shit up with Johnny because fuck it why not, and Kinzie complaining in my ear when something doesnt go exactly to plan because ohh that looks fun.
Always good to see a new Flippy vid! So disappointed character customisation is not a thing in this game. I hope they bring it back into future projects
So AoM is kinda like Overwatch, Crackdown and Saints Row in an unprotected orgy. Eh, that's fair enough. I actually might get this game... If it releases before Crackdown 3. Honestly, Crackdown 3 looks fucking SICK!
FluxGalaxies I always thought of crackdown as a family member of saints row they both have similarities. Crackdown: You fight gang members to save the city Saints Row: You fight gang members to take over the city.
Honestly if Volition wants to get back on track here's what they should do; Separate Agents from the Saints Row label entirely and make it a unique IP. They can keep little Easter eggs like the symbol for the Saints or whatever, Hell maybe add some Ultor stuff in there too. Next they should do a HD remaster of SR 1 and 2 and make damn sure they don't cut any features from the originals. If anything they should try to add in even more to them. If they could at least do that I feel like fans will be happy and Vol will make a pretty good chunk of change from that.
What my Dreams are: Future Saints Row games are like SR1-2. Agents of Mayhem games are like SR3-4. Everyone is Happy, everyone gets their game. And Everyone can SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT WHAT SR STYLE IS THE BEST, IT'S GETTING ON MY NERVES!

It almost seems like Volition is embarrassed of SR1/2 and all the gangsta street crime stuff. They forget that those games put the series on the map. SR3 began the death of the series turning into a cheap zany crapfest, and AoM looks like another cheap zany crapfest thats trying to cash in on Overmeme. I really wish they would at the very least release a version of SR1/2 for modern consoles.
A couple of things I hope for the game Agents of Mayhem is developed characters that don't get boring after a while. Also if there is the option of changing costumes for characters, they shouldn't look the same with different colours. There should be different styles. And since the missions are re-playable they should be slightly different for different characters. Whether that would be maybe something a certain character can do or they have different thoughts and opinions. Not just do the exact same thing with different characters where they get too samey.

Rockstar also stolen The tron bike from saints row the third, Criminal Damage was stolen from Saints Row series with Mayhem :/ also GTA is a Driver Clone :) but comparing Saints Row To GTA is like comparing Godfather to the matrix. :) not only that but saints row was in development before san andreas was a thing :/ but san andreas was release first.
But if you really think about it, Rockstar has a big fanbase compared to saints row series. but ever since the aliens in saints row, it became terrible and that's how it lost it fame while rockstar stolen the thunder.

Just as I had loved the previous entries to various degrees, it was an awesome game for me like the rest of the SR series. And this coming from an OG SR1-SR2 player. SRIV was a pretty fun game to play for me. Isn't terrible at all. Sure, it may have lost its roots around that point, but it was still a fun game in its own right.

The Saints Row franchise is pure cancer at this point, both the content and the community. Agents of Mayhem will fail because it''s essentially everything that's bad about Saints Row made twice as bad and mashed into one game. I hope this will be the final nail in Volition's coffin so that Deep Silver hands the IP over to someone else...

The only reason Saints Row IV's sales are "exceptional" is because the investment was minimal, which is no surprise considering THQ was in charge for most of Saints Row IV's development. There's also the fact that Saints Row IV still had some redeeming features that carried over from previous games (more or less), such as the character creation, the customization... no, that's about it.
You sort of hit the same point. Saints Row 4 was in huge development stress due to the THQ transition and it originally being an expansion. I really like what Volition made despite the limitations they had as a studio, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Therefore meaning, I am excited for their new project and keen to see more about it.
It should've stayed an expansion, at least then it would've added on top of what Saints Row The Third already had. Instead they decided to re-release Saints Row The Third with a fresh coat of sci-fi paint and call it a new game, priced accordingly. They could've delayed it when Deep Silver acquired the rights and made it into a proper game, but instead they opted to stay on schedule and honor THQ's legacy by flooding the game with pay-2-win DLC. But fine, let's say they had an excuse, just for the sake of arguing. However, with Agents of Mayhem they don't have that excuse. They aren't going bankrupt and, knowing Deep Silver, I doubt they are pressuring them too hard. Yet somehow, Agents of Mayhem looks even worse than Saints Row IV. Not only it looks worse but it looks dated, both in terms of graphics and in terms of gameplay. It looks like something that should've come out 5 years ago as an XBLA title, not a 2017 AAA game.
That is painfully false, I'm sorry to say. Firstly, Volition themselves most likely didn't have control of SR4 like that (I know THQ caused a lot of pressure and cuts with 3). So I don't really see how the dev team themselves can be blamed for upper management. Sorry, you are wearing nostalgia goggles, because this does look a lot better than 4, and is definitely up to par with the current generation. The "this looks like a PS2 game" sort of memery is rather ridiculous. If you don't understand why that isn't true, I don't know what to tell you. Heck, even with Shadow Of War, the actual visuals during gameplay look rather bland and not very impressive (and the cinematic gameplay was fabricated), almost downgraded from the last title. Not to mention it has microtransactions in a singleplayer title, preorders and those terrible different editions publishers keep trying to push on people (you can buy some consoles for less). Plus, the gameplay looks very fluid, and seems more polished than some other games manage (and ones that came out recently too). Plus with 3 and 4 being great pc ports, I'm looking forward to it. Not a fan of preorders, but the AOM one isn't something I care about, but that's a good thing, not holding content ransom, it's not perfect, but the rest of the industry kind of sucks at the moment.
I think there's much more than saints row and people need to forget about it. Lol. All I see is people saying "remaster SR2!" and how AOM looks like it sucks. Then there's people who say it looks good, but if it was named SR5 they would say it looks bad. The game looks kinda fun though. I might get it. I really liked SR3 and 4 when I first played them so this might be good since it's crazy looking.
Looks good but I get why people want a SR2 remaster. I'd rather have a whole new saints row game where the story restarts. A few of the ideas for sr3 with returning to Stilwater for gats funeral were pretty neato.
The game has come out now, and honestly I really enjoy it. The characters are intriguing, however, Oni, the yakuza assasin, is by far the most intriguing.

Honestly if Volition wants to get back on track here's what they should do; Separate Agents from the Saints Row label entirely and make it a unique IP. They can keep little Easter eggs like the symbol for the Saints or whatever, Hell maybe add some Ultor stuff in there too. Next they should do a HD remaster of SR 1 and 2 and make damn sure they don't cut any features from the originals. If anything they should try to add in even more to them. If they could at least do that I feel like fans will be happy and Vol will make a pretty good chunk of change from that.

It almost seems like Volition is embarrassed of SR1/2 and all the gangsta street crime stuff. They forget that those games put the series on the map. SR3 began the death of the series turning into a cheap zany crapfest, and AoM looks like another cheap zany crapfest thats trying to cash in on Overmeme. I really wish they would at the very least release a version of SR1/2 for modern consoles.

A couple of things I hope for the game Agents of Mayhem is developed characters that don't get boring after a while. Also if there is the option of changing costumes for characters, they shouldn't look the same with different colours. There should be different styles. And since the missions are re-playable they should be slightly different for different characters. Whether that would be maybe something a certain character can do or they have different thoughts and opinions. Not just do the exact same thing with different characters where they get too samey.

Terrible? I loved Saints Row IV! Just as I had loved the previous entries to various degrees, it was an awesome game for me like the rest of the SR series. And this coming from an OG SR1-SR2 player. SRIV was a pretty fun game to play for me. Isn't terrible at all. Sure, it may have lost its roots around that point, but it was still a fun game in its own right.
If you like Saints Row 4, More Power to you. but for me, i don't like it at all.

The Saints Row franchise is pure cancer at this point, both the content and the community. Agents of Mayhem will fail because it''s essentially everything that's bad about Saints Row made twice as bad and mashed into one game. I hope this will be the final nail in Volition's coffin so that Deep Silver hands the IP over to someone else...

The only reason Saints Row IV's sales are "exceptional" is because the investment was minimal, which is no surprise considering THQ was in charge for most of Saints Row IV's development. There's also the fact that Saints Row IV still had some redeeming features that carried over from previous games (more or less), such as the character creation, the customization... no, that's about it.
You sort of hit the same point. Saints Row 4 was in huge development stress due to the THQ transition and it originally being an expansion. I really like what Volition made despite the limitations they had as a studio, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Therefore meaning, I am excited for their new project and keen to see more about it.
It should've stayed an expansion, at least then it would've added on top of what Saints Row The Third already had. Instead they decided to re-release Saints Row The Third with a fresh coat of sci-fi paint and call it a new game, priced accordingly. They could've delayed it when Deep Silver acquired the rights and made it into a proper game, but instead they opted to stay on schedule and honor THQ's legacy by flooding the game with pay-2-win DLC.
But fine, let's say they had an excuse, just for the sake of arguing. However, with Agents of Mayhem they don't have that excuse. They aren't going bankrupt and, knowing Deep Silver, I doubt they are pressuring them too hard. Yet somehow, Agents of Mayhem looks even worse than Saints Row IV. Not only it looks worse but it looks dated, both in terms of graphics and in terms of gameplay. It looks like something that should've come out 5 years ago as an XBLA title, not a 2017 AAA game.
That is painfully false, I'm sorry to say. Firstly, Volition themselves most likely didn't have control of SR4 like that (I know THQ caused a lot of pressure and cuts with 3). So I don't really see how the dev team themselves can be blamed for upper management.
Sorry, you are wearing nostalgia goggles, because this does look a lot better than 4, and is definitely up to par with the current generation.
The "this looks like a PS2 game" sort of memery is rather ridiculous. If you don't understand why that isn't true, I don't know what to tell you.
Heck, even with Shadow Of War, the actual visuals during gameplay look rather bland and not very impressive (and the cinematic gameplay was fabricated), almost downgraded from the last title. Not to mention it has microtransactions in a singleplayer title, preorders and those terrible different editions publishers keep trying to push on people (you can buy some consoles for less).
Plus, the gameplay looks very fluid, and seems more polished than some other games manage (and ones that came out recently too). Plus with 3 and 4 being great pc ports, I'm looking forward to it.
Not a fan of preorders, but the AOM one isn't something I care about, but that's a good thing, not holding content ransom, it's not perfect, but the rest of the industry kind of sucks at the moment.

I think there's much more than saints row and people need to forget about it. Lol. All I see is people saying "remaster SR2!" and how AOM looks like it sucks. Then there's people who say it looks good, but if it was named SR5 they would say it looks bad. The game looks kinda fun though. I might get it. I really liked SR3 and 4 when I first played them so this might be good since it's crazy looking.
Looks good but I get why people want a SR2 remaster. I'd rather have a whole new saints row game where the story restarts. A few of the ideas for sr3 with returning to Stilwater for gats funeral were pretty neato.
