    The most overlooked thing is people don't check to see if the bores are round. A hone will not make a bore round again. I follows the same shape as the bore. I've seen people hone and re ring a engine and the thing burns oil worse than before. You need to also measure the bore in multiple places to check for out of round and taper.

    They used to sell .001 and .003 and .005 oversized pistons decades ago for situations like you have back when people actually fixed stuff on a budget. A good locking hone in experienced hands is the next best thing to a boring bar and a locking hone will tell you everything you wanted to know about a cylinder bore. (There are no locking hones in this video) A bottle brush or "dingle ball" hone is the worst possible thing you can use. "Look how GOOD the cylinder came out"!! a dingle ball hone user will say as the dingle balls reach down in to all the imperfections in a cylinder and "hone" the imperfections, too.

    Honing is not boring lol. Appreciate the upload. Gonna hone a cylinder for the first time in a few weeks.

    Great work uploaded. Thanks for this video.

    one thing you did not mention, the MAIN reason you hone a cylinder is to deglaze the cylinders. and "scuff" them so the rings will break in with the cylinder walls.

      Valid point, but if you don't know why you are honing, I hope to god you do not have a home in your hand. I guess it's a real thing. Guy told me he bored his engine ten over with a home once (face palm)

      possible with a "hone" but cant say the squareness is guaranteed lol with just glaze breaking type hone (spring loaded) would like to snap that to check end results

    Which is the best honing tool my size is 30mm to 90mm
    How can I get it or purchase it

    It will work just fine as long as you don't get an ECM from Adam at module experts

    How do you boil the block to clean?
    Industrial process or in a 44 gal drum on a fire?
    Good video

      I take mine into a machine shop and it costs around 80 dollars to boil but looks perfect when its done as if it were factory fresh.

      HotRod Paul Many machine shops don't "Hot tank" blocks any more. Many of them steam clean because it's more efficient, and you can get the blocks cleaner with less warpage.

      depending on if it is steel or aluminum block differnt methods are effective.. when i do a 010 chevy small block i like to have them baked machine shop does it.. the 010 blocks have a higher nickel content making the block harder and better the more heat cycles it goes through. the block i have also just had them steamed and just used engine cleaner and a pressure washer..

    Im working on a f163 continental engine i am going to cross hatch the cylinder walls what grade hone should i use

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Klahold on rering jobs, I always use iron rings. Iron rings require a 240 grit ball hone

      ThunderHead289 thank you this goes in a welder was bored .020 in. 1996 and hasnt. Had more then 500 hours on it and it had and oil problem and i found that the cylinders were not cross hatched engine generator max rmp is 1550

      I was also going to install two piece oil rings i personally dont like three piece oil rings and all the diesel engines i have done new oem pistons and sleeves come with two piece rings. I correct me if im wrong but i think its cause diesel are low rpm engines my f163 is also low rpm and runs low rmps no more then 1500 so would it be recommended to use the two piece oil rings three piece i think are for high rpms

    If you bore a cylinder do i Need to get bigger cylinders?

      thanks don. I decided not to bore the cylinders this time. Really running a tight budget on my car and already its pay check to pay check but thank you i did mean pistons.

    so if hone the block I can use new stock pistons and ring as long as there isn't deep wear marks in the cylinder wall then I would have to bore it and get bigger pistons and ring s

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but you can only gone it so much. The ring gap needs to be within tolerance. Usually if the bore has a decent ridge on the top, it needs to be bored over. Never buy new Pistons for a hone job, waste of money.

      my ls block has a bore of 4.065 do I need to go to the machine shop if I want to bore it out to 4.070 seems like I could just do it by hand. first time building a ls engine want to learn how to do it my self to save money

    • @Raven4122
      @Raven4122 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      if you go another .005 you will more than likely need new pistons..you need to check these 2 things when you do the pistons.. Piston clearance and ring gap..there are other things to check but these have to be correct.. Piston clearance in the difference between the piston diameter and the cylinder diameter. Ring gap is the gap that remains when the ring is pushed into the cylinder and squared.. Can you hone out .005 yes but it will take time plus spring type hones will follow the contour of your cylinders so it they are not plate bored and distorted the new hole will also be destorted.

    • @Raven4122
      @Raven4122 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      NOT true lol.. If their is a ridge on top you remove the ridge the piston does not go that high any ways except to install it.. you need to check the actual cylinder diameters to see if it needs bored out. as for ring gap you need to use file fit rings and you will set the gap. check my race videos I built several of the engines on the track..
