    We are to the point that we honing the cylinders to check condition of the block. As you can see do not run the drill in reverse. The cylinder hone is not capable of going both directions. I did not know that it would fly apart.

    I bow to you Sir for not editing that reverse motion mishap because that is exactly what could happen to anyone attempting a hone. But mind you , using a honing ball (instead of those stones) will make things so much easier.

      Most of the time I will not edit it out just to let everybody see things happen. We all know that when we are working on stuff things break and sometimes thing just don't go as planned.

    @ OM, When I went 2 OMC Kent Wa, OMC Training center a Instructor told me the up & down / in & out should be done slooooowly during the honing process, 4 what it's worth. Thought I'd share,

    Heya OM, I'm re-watching this job after about 18 mths and am enjoying watching you work. My dad used to say I enjoyed watching people work just a bit too much and not actually working !!!
    Anyway, Ive got Arthur 👁️tis now in both hands so now Ive got an excuse.
    I really like your platform (?) and delivery. I particularly liked watching you oil your stones for honing.
    Just kidding, hope you're well and still boating.

    I like using the one with little balls on the end because they can’t get caught up on the ports had best luck with abrasive little balls on the end with the drill good luck thanks for the videos

    Well, the cylinders look better than I expected they would...Usually a "ball hone" does a better job at getting to all the low points and chamfering the ports. It looks as if there is some wear in the port area, because I don't see any honing marks there, this is fairly normal...Again, you should measure the cylinders carefully, at least check ring end gap using a new ring at several points in the cylinder. It looks as if you are committed to two new pistons....But, be careful, many of the newer replacement pistons have press fit both sides in the wrist pin bores, making it near impossible to avoid distorting the new piston while pressing the wrist pins back in....Please have a much closer look at the wrist pin needle bearings, make sure they are not rusted/pitted...The same goes for the rod bores, and crank journals. This thing had water in it, you surely don't want trouble down the road. You may want to consider a used pair of pistons/rods to avoid the heart ache of trying to assemble newer style pistons...
    Stay safe, they don't seem to know where that storm is going, just that it is a powerful one....D

      First of all I want to thank you for all of the knowledge you have shared. I did the ring gap at different places in the cylinder and the widest point was 0.45 mm. The manual says that it should be between 0.13 mm - 0.38 mm. I do know that this is the part that will either make you or brake you if it is not right. You are so right about the parts to do this job. Costly would be a under statement. I could get a 1000.00 in this job easy if I am not careful. Before I buy any pistons I am going to take the block to our local machine shop and have them check it. I will let you know what they say.

    • @fleetwin1
      @fleetwin1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It becomes a judgment call at this point buddy....Yeah, the bores aren't perfect, but the cost to make it like new is prohibitive... I would look for some used piston/rod assemblies and put it back together that way. You have to be careful about having that block bored, not many shops have experience to do it properly. The big red flag is if the shop asks for the new pistons to "fit them to the block". Not done that way on OMCs. Remember, those new pistons will probably be the "press fit both sides" variety, which are near impossible to assemble correctly.... I will keep my eyes open for some affordable stuff for you....Don't mean to repeat myself, but I am assuming you have had a real close look at all the bearings/journals. I know replacing the lower crank bearing is a pain, but it takes a big load and controls crank end play...Don't think it is very expensive, you can press it on with a large socket... Sure hope the storm misses you....D

    Is it common to have to press the pin out like that in boat motors? All my experience is with dirtbike and ive never had to do that. Thanks for the help. Another great video

    • @-Viceroy-

      Normal procedure in these engines.
      I guess the reason for that is the angle of the stroke and vertical mounting of the cranckshaft.

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The evinrude outboards I have worked on you have to press the wrist pin out or drive it out. The pin is so tight the manual says be careful not to distort piston. Outboard motors are the only engine I have run into that you press the wrist pin out.

      This engine the cylinder walls were real rusty. I honed the cylinders to clean them up. When the cylinder were check at the shop they were still in range for the standard piston.

      @@jeffreywhicker8947 Thanks for the prayers they worked. When the hurricane past it moved off shore a little when it past us, and we just got 60 to 100 MPH winds. Just a little tree damage. Hurricane Florence already ripe down anything it could not with stand a lot higher winds than that. Thanks for praying for us. The people about 10 miles south of us sure took a hard hit. Lots of tornado's lots of damage.
