The beauty is they got the same actor Ricardo Montalban to portray Khan as he did in the Star Trek series episode: "The space seed." I don't think the movie would have turned out as good as it did if they would have had a different actor playing Khan. Even though people say Chekov wasn't in that episode so how how could Khan and Chekov know each other. It could be easily explained that Chekov was on the ship as he would part of the crew we just didn't see him. The same as sometimes in episodes we don't see Mr. Sulu.🖖

The novel based on the movie indicated that Kirstie Alley's Saavik was supposed to be half-Vulcan & half Romulan. The novelist, Vonda McIntyre, had access to the full script (including scenes and lines that were cut) as well as the movie bible which might have included that as a back story. According to Memory Alpha the line that was cut from the movie has Spock saying, "She's half Romulan, Jim. The admixture makes her more volatile than - me, for example." It was only when the role was taken over by Robin Curtis that Saavik appeared to be fully Vulcan.
Star Trek:TMP was an outgrowth of the proposed TV reboot Star Trek: Phase II - the cast of which included all of the TOS regulars except for Spock (as Nimoy wasn't interested at the time in reprising the role) and new characters Willard Decker, Ilia and a young Vulcan named Xon who wished to be more like humans so he could understand them (the actor did appear in the film as the commander of the station that is destroyed by V'ger). The popularity of Star Wars actually led to the TV series being repurposed as the movie.. Those three new characters are also the basis for TNG characters William Riker, Deanna Troi and Data.

There's alway been excellent 1-to-1 dialogue interactions between certain characters in classic Star Trek. The one here between Spock and Kirk hits hard. But other do include (but not limited to):
🔹️Kirk and Saavik: Search for Spock - Mind meld to retrieve Spock's memories.
🔹️Kirk and Spock: Undiscovered Country - Kirks protestation towards Spock about meeting the Klingons.
🔹️Picard and Riker: TNG - In Picard's ready room, confronting his commander about a past mutiny.
🔹️Sisko and Maquis leader(?): DS9 ‐ On the Defiant threatening to destroy a second Maquis settlement.
All great interactions with well written lines, something that Kurtzman Trek could never hold a candle to.

Nerd alert! "NCC" does not mean Nautical Class Cruiser. In the 1975 book by technical illustrator Franz Joseph Schnaubelt "Star Trek: Blueprints" it was revealed that NCC stands for "Naval Construction Contract." However, this was changed in both "The Making of Star Trek", and the second season writers guide update to "Navy-Curtis Craft", referring to the fact that the design and construction of the cruisers was a combination of the Navy's and Curtis Industries inputs. However, countless starships have been constructed since then also bearing the "NCC". Therefore unless Federation starships were all designed and constructed by the same two groups, generation after generation, many fans agree that the original designation of "Naval Construction Contract" makes more sense since it is not dependent on the belief that all starships bearing the "NCC" were all designed and constructed by the same groups. In either case, "NCC" does not stand for nautical class cruiser. Yes... I'm that big of a nerd. Thanks for the entertaining reaction. I love the passion you have for Star Trek. Stay awesome guys. :)

This is the first video that I've seen on your channel. Your name caught my attention 😆, but of course I don't know you or John at all, so I don't know his taste. Still, I think it's a mistake to just completely dismiss Star Trek: The Motion Picture like that. After all, if it was true that no one who watched it would ever watch another, then the movie you just saw wouldn't exist. Clearly, TMP tried to be a 2001-like spectacle, and didn't really succeed. The Director's Cut improved it.
It's got to be seen with a decent home theater, though. When I realised that the Blu-ray was just the theatrical cut, I didn't bother to upgrade, but if I can find the 4k Director's Cut for a reasonable price, I'll get it. Of course, the following movies are better, including III, but I think of all the movies with the original cast, V is the worst. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is very good, and saw the return of Nicholas Meyer as the director, but an obvious parable on the real world events of the time, like Chernobyl and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
And as for rather watching Superman IV, are you serious? The only thing I can imagine is the "Plan 9 From Outer Space" entertainment value. Superman IV is certainly better if you watch it specifically to make fun of its constant ineptitude.

    • @PatrickStewart316
      @PatrickStewart316  ปีที่แล้ว

So. First. Welcome to the channel. Second. Good call outs.
Third, some background. John and I have been friends for 26 years. Actually 27 years now. Throughout all those years he made fun of franchises like this and never saw a Star Wars or Star Trek film. Harry Potter, Hinger Games, things like that he never saw either. I started this channel with the express intent of turning him into a fan and getting him to like the movies. For instance I knew if we started him on the original Star Wars we would lose him. So I started him on Rogue One and then took him through the films. “Qapla’”
So too with this series. My goal remains. Get him vested in the story and fandom. Had we shown him TMP we would have lost him. That being said he has agreed to watch TMP once done with series. So not a total loss.
Also can’t wait for 4k TMP. Gonna be cool. But generally speaking I don’t enjoy movies for their visual cinematography. Gotta have compelling characters (TMP ✅), good plot (TMP ✅), good pacing (TMP 👎), great acting (TMP 👎), emotional buy in (TMP 👎). My favorite ST is Undiscovered Country. Everything is there including a good message.

Patrick! Your enthusiasm is really nice to experience. I was excited to see you bring John in to see the movie, but what motivated him to make smart-ass comments and remarks throughout? I stopped watching another duo who was reacting to the original series. It's not fun to watch, and the self-importance of after-the-fact critics is irritating. Again, really like YOUR enthusiasm.

    • @PatrickStewart316
      @PatrickStewart316  ปีที่แล้ว

Well. What I can say is we make fun of everything. If you’ve followed us over the last 3 years you would see that John comes into these as a skeptic. Mid 40s and never seen any of these. Of course, he hasn’t watched them because he thought they were, frankly, stupid. The fun is taking him from someone who starts off bashing the first movie in a new to him series, and by the end he is a staunch fan and defender. Heck, you should have seen his Harry Potter conversion.
End of the day we could be like so many popular reaction channels and ooooohh & ahhhhh at all the right moments with our hands on our cheeks. But his reaction is genuine. If he thinks something is cheesy and over the top he is going to make fun of it. As do I. My favorite part is being able to say “I told you so,” to him.
But I get it. It’s a turn off to some. But we are irreverent about it all. Some folks take this stuff too seriously. I’ve got some of the rarest Star Wars collectibles and a 10 hour Star Wars tattoo, but because I dared to make snarky comments about some Star Wars material and don’t like everything the franchise has put out then I am somehow a heretic.
Long and short is that Johns reactions are a journey to fandom. That’s why I started them. They aren’t an homage to the fans. So, glad you stopped by, thanks for the input. Stick around if you want to see him become a fan. But if it’s a turn off, live long and prosper 🖖 Chris

I just run accross your channel recently and getting caught up on your Star Trek reactions. Its really a shame you guys disnt react to The Motion Picture. I really dont agree that it sucks. Its just different. Its slower paced. Less action but more tense.

I appreciate the thoughts. Each to their own. If it were just a matter of getting raw reactions out of John, and nothing else I would definitely have started with the motion picture. But from the inception of this channel, my goal has always been to make him a fan of whatever series I show him for the first time. For instance, when I first showed him Star Wars, we started with rogue one so I could get him hooked. And we started him with the original Star Wars we would’ve lost him, and even he agreed on that one. After 27 years of friendship, I pretty much know what will turn him off and what won’t, and wanted him to give the series an honest chance.

While the Starfleet duty Uniform features a Red lapel jacket. The Multi colored Division colors are still very prevalent. However, the colors are different and there are more of them in this era. They are identified by the shirt collars under the Jacket. The Uniforms are a bit more complicated as well since Medical Uniforms and surgery attire are quite different. And the Kakay shoulders of the Utility uniform Typically worn by Cadets and NCO's. But for most these specific uniforms like Starbase service uniforms a colored armband would be worn to denote division. The divisions are as follows:
    White- Command
    Yellow- Operations
    Grey- Science/Technician
    Dark Green- Security
    Light Green- Medical
    Red- Cadet
    Black- NCO's and Enlisted
    Sky Blue- Special Services

When you're talking about the first Star Trek movie, are you really talking about Star Trek 5, which really is cheesy and quite stupid in many ways? TMP is very slow in the style of 2001 A Space Odyssey, with clear attempts to be a cerebral epic, but the story is pretty solid, has great visual effects and one of the greatest scores ever composed for any movie. It certainly has its flaws, but nowhere near the way Five was as a Shatner ego trip.

Brilliant movie, still love it! I saw all of them in the theater originally. My opinion these days is that 6 is a hair better than this one. At least as good. And 1 has become one of my favorites honestly. In the theater I loved ST1 because the effects and world building at the time was epic and has held up well. Also it was an exciting retro-trip for those of us that grew up with the series on small black and white screens. It absolutely was unfinished, poorly paced and had awkward dialogue, but we were able to ignore that at the time. The 4K Director’s Edition fixes a lot of that. 😊

Chomping at the bit to watch the 4k DE of TMP. Haven’t seen it. Don’t own it yet. Waiting for this journey with John to end to get there.

    1. BEST of the entire series. Including the new ones.
    2. You can hear Chekov's feet hit the wooden deck when he steps off the box
when Khan "lowers" him during his capture scene.
    3. There's a bone of contention that Chekov hadn't been featured yet from "Space seed" which this was based. If you get the chance review the TSO series. You won't regret it.😎
    4. Kirstie Alley before she gained 150 lbs,
    5. That was really Recardo Montalban's chest.
    6. Kirk and Khan don't see each other face to face.
    7. I'm not the biggest fan of Kirk screaming "KHAAAAAN". Crackers or wine with that cheese? 😉
    8. Leonard Nimoy was tired of playing Spock and even though under contract
to carry on he agreed only if he could direct the next movie in the series.
    9. Some people think Kahn recognizing Chekov is a goof, but we hadn't been introduced to Chekov until after "Space Seed" from TOS. It doesn't mean he wasn't there.

For your 9th point, I have a head canon that Chekov was a member of the crew when Khan first came on board the Enterprise. He just wasn't on the Bridge staff yet, or was off duty.
Either way, in addition to Khan studying all the tech manuals on the Enterprise while in sickbay, he also studied the entire crew manifest which likely contained bios and photos of the crew members. Given his "genetically engineered intellect", he has a photographic memory and remembered what every member of the crew looked like, whether he meet them personally or not.
Having this head canon allows me to brush off that little snafu in an otherwise perfect Star Trek movie.
