In one of the Shatner (non canon of course, thanks Kurtzman...) novels, we see an alternate universe daughter of Spock and Saavik, T'val, she has a cybernetic arm as well. John seemed unwell before the movie, I hope he's not hogh on something or out of a sleepless night...

John was definitely sick. Sinus infection and hopped up on sinus meds. He’s okay now though.
