    Scary Monsters is a Self Help Album.
    ING #1 is before therapy, ING #2 is after therapy. The songs in between are the therapy. Maybe the greatest album ever. Certainly, the most unique.

    • @CONSIDERABLYMORE1
      @CONSIDERABLYMORE1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Gabriela Amari I think you may be mistaken Gabriela. Scary Monsters, from which these tracks were taken, was released only 16 months after the equally, in my humble opinion, Lodger. The gap you may be referring to is the one between Scary Monsters and Let's Dance (3 years) when he had left RCA for a massively lucrative deal with EMI. Also Let's Dance saw a return to touring after an even longer gap (5 years).
      You are of course 100% correct on your other point! RIP David.

    • @BlackMonk66
      @BlackMonk66 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CONSIDERABLYMORE1 If I remember correctly, it was described as something of a comeback at the time. Ashes to Ashes was his biggest hit in years worldwide, though not as much in the US. The video got a lot of play on MTV, though. The album got better reviews than Lodger and it didn't have the instrumentals that Low and Heroes did, so it was considered a comeback in that way.

    • @CONSIDERABLYMORE1
      @CONSIDERABLYMORE1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +BlackMonk66 how can it be a comeback? I have followed Bowie since 1979 and it certainly wasn't regarded as a comeback. Comeback's normally imply an unusually lengthy hiatus. So as I said before his 1983 tour was a "comeback" tour following a five year gap in live shows. The period 1977-1980 was his most prolific in terms of output, releasing six LP's (two with Iggy Pop). Scary Monster's was definitely not a comeback. It was as you say more commercially successful than Lodger, but released only 16 months after Lodger.

    • @BlackMonk66
      @BlackMonk66 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +CONSIDERABLYMORE1 I was following him then, too, and Scary Monsters was considered a comeback in reviews at the time. The word has a wider meaning than you suggest and there are both commercial and artistic comebacks as well. If a baseball team is described as having a comeback in the ninth inning of a game, it means they had been losing for the first eight innings, not that they weren't playing for those innings. It was a comeback commercially, probably more successful than anything after Young Americans, and since Lodger got middling reviews and the albums before it were filled with esoteric instrumentals, it was an artistic comeback for anyone who wanted a Bowie album that was just filled with good songs, like he did in the early 70s. Then there's that it's generally described as his first record after the Berlin trilogy, so it was a return in that way.
      You have a valid perspective. If you're not looking at it from a commercial perspective and you don't see Scary Monsters as an artistic change of direction, it's reasonable not to consider it a comeback album. My only point is that there are equally valid perspectives that consider it a comeback.

    • @bawoman
      @bawoman 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Gabriela Amari I'm with considerablymore1....Bowie was making albums non stop around this time.....not really a comeback....and as far as a hit he had had one 3 years prior, with Heroes

    Part 1: Hard to make a song about white hot anger but he managed to pull it off. It helps to have the best talent working with you, in this case the Japanese woman and Fripp. Part 1 is my second favorite Bowie song (first is 'Be My Wife' - Bowie was an earth-shattering artist at both extremes).

    WWhTever type of comeback it was, not everyone was as aware of his more obscure work. In terms of commercial music, yes, this was a comeback. The songs that were danced to in clubs. And I still cry now when I listen to certain Bowie songs. He was a large part of my life soundtrack.

    My favourite album will probably always be diamond dogs (not counting the live albums), but recently this entire album has just been the vibe and I've really started to appreciate this album more than I ever have. I've always known his work and love the glam stuff, the Berlin Era and even his pop stuff but really only knew ashes to ashes and fashion off this record. Can never get enough bowie.
    My favourite track is probably teenage wildlife or because you're young.

      Johnnywhamo wow what a movie to see based on a somewhat minor bit player in said movie! Right up there with Requiem for a Dream, but at least the main character gets a bittersweet "happy" ending

    In black and white, Bowie looks like a young Willem Dafoe.

    I honestly don't feel like it was a comeback, per se, because station to station, low, heroes, and lodger are amazing fucking albums. However scary monsters was perhaps his most commercially successful album at this time, till lets dance, which ironically I feel is a lesser album then those stated, in quality.

    So where's the moral
    When people have their fingers broken
    To be insulted by these fascists
    It's so degrading
    And it's no game…
