I have never been able to have an adult clear concise conversation with the narcissist without them going off on a rant and rage substaining narcissistic injury screaming yelling and stomping out of the room like a tantrumed child. After this happens you realize there is no talking to this person about anything and they make something out of nothing every time the narc speaks it's negative and always an issue even to children they speak condescendingly asking inappropriate questions and demanding.
My narc bud was all over me for months. Texts started like, "Yo, what's up? I know you aren't doing anything." I felt like I needed to respond right away all the time. Charming, charismatic, funny as hell. We connected on every word. One night out of blue he bought me a shot at bar, then took it out of my hand and whipped it into trash and said, "When someone buys you a drink, you show respect." I was floored. I said thank you, and I bought him stuff before. It was so odd and out of character. And then the devalue phase started. I never was a victim of something like this. It took me months to get through that mind fuck.

She then replied, You will have to ask my husband for permission!!! No fckn way!

I understood what you ment by you just get a feeling like you cant be yourself around the narcissist. For example with my ex narc it felt like I was walking on eggshells I was very selective on what I said to her in case i said something that pissed her off also she would get irritated and angry at me over the most petty things I said or did. It was like if I breath the wrong way she would get annoyed. It made me feel very uncomfortable around her and it was very unpleasant when she would have her narcissistic rage One time she accused me that I was being mean to her and I was so confused because what I said wasn't mean or anything. I think back on it and now the brain fog is gone I really understand why I was so miserable and it was mentally exhausting
I was harassed for 6 years by a narc at my workplace who literally would not leave me alone. He was so lazy and would project the problem onto me every time I would call him out. He gaslit my mind into oblivion, smear campaigned my name across the warehouse, constantly twisted the facts...he looks so pissed off now that Im in a better department and out of his reach. He cant stand his inability to affect me.

I know that not allowing them to control you does literally make them angry. If you set a boundary, or say no to them they get violent sometimes, or threaten. That is what happened to me.
