  • In this video, we compare some of the similarities between Turkish and Albanian, two languages that belong to different families, with Şimal, a Turkish speaker from Turkey and Klajd, an Albanian speaker from Albania, challenging each other with a list of words and sentences. Please contact us on Instagram if you have any questions or feedback:

The Turkish language (Türkçe), which is also referred to as Istanbul Turkish, is the most widely spoken of the Turkic languages, with most of its native speakers living in Western Asia, and significant group of speakers in Germany, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Northern Cyprus, Greece, the Caucasus, and other parts of Europe and Central Asia. Ottoman Turkish, which was a variation of the Turkish spoken today, influenced many parts of Europe during the time that the Ottoman Empire expanded. When the modern Turkish republic was established, one of Atatürk's Reforms consisted of changing the Ottoman Turkish alphabet with a Latin alphabet. Today, Turkish is recognized as a minority language in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Iraq, Macedonia, and Romania. Meanwhile, Albanian occupies an independent branch within the Indo-European language family. It is an official language in Albania and Kosovo and has official minority status in Italy, Romania, Montenegro, Serbia, and Macedonia.

For those who ask, the drink we had in the beginning is called "raki/rakı" or "rakia", a very popular drink in both Turkey and Albania. Considered the national drink, it is a part of the culture and cuisine of both nations.
As many of you know, since our daughter was born earlier this year, I took a 9-month parental leave off work. In January I will be going back to work, so our plan is to change the weekly video uploads to every 2 weeks. Thank you for understanding and for your support. Turkey is the country with most albanians where millions are full or partial descedants of albanians. In istanbul there is a neighbourhood called arnavutkoy(the village of albanians). The mayor of bursa a few years ago was an albanian. Such a great friendship between our people. Selam turkish kardesler from arnavutluk

@Tony Camaj I am albanian and there is 0 historical evidence about your assumption. Not a document for any type of massacre, genocide or forced conversion. Actually our people has never had a better historical period than during ottomans. Tirana(today capital), Korca etc were established during that period. Berat, Shkoder, Durres, Prizren, Uskup etc a large part maybe half and more of area of those cities are built and developed during ottomans and were centers of trade for all balkans. See now in 21 century no one knows where those impovereshed cities are on the map let alone being top economical hotspots.

Tony Camaj I don't need ur permission to call myself an albanian since me and my forefathers speak this language for centuries. Im not denying ur grandfather house story but it was sporadic cases for rightful punishment for some crime or it could be injustice as every state has done in history. Ottomans were not angels that gave everyone flowers and free food but their rule it was not either a systematic violence, torture and massacre wanting to eleminate native population bcs it would be recorded in western europe documents(vatican and italy are just a sea away from us so they would know smth), folklore etc. The dictator enver hoxha for only 45 years managed to eradicate all mosques and churches and religion from most people hearts(+2million). Ottomans ruled here for more than 450 years. If even one or two sultans wanted christians in albania(not more than 150k) eleminated you think there would be any church still standing today?

Nice episode :) As a bulgarian I thought at first, that "kapak acik" was a pretty random sentence, since in our language ачик/acik could be both adjective or adverb meaning visible, clear, transparent, obvious...something like that. Which is actually the same as open, but just a different perspective. Also чакмак/cakmak in bulgarian is not a modern-day lighter, but that piece of metal used together with a stone to start a fire (don't know the english word). We could still get it, but with a bit more of explanation.

These few words are nothing unlike the many intellectuals, the education and cultural influence that this empire has produced. Intellectuals such as Hasan Tahsini, or the father of our nation Pashko Vasa, who (as a Christian) served high Positions in the Ottoman Empire. Sorry for those silly Albanians who do not appreciate that and do not know their own History.
In our schools there is a lot of propaganda and anti-Ottoman, pro-Western politics. That's why some Albanians are so cheeky. Just take a look at the Albanians who have emerged from the Ottoman Time and understand, that this was the best Time in our History. Also has Turkey always helped us in the bad Times. Hauntingly, the ominous consequences Marin Barleti predicted in his work "The Siege of Shkodra" were reported more than 400 years later by C.Telford Erickson (honorary Albanian delegate to the Paris Peace Conference), who wrote of malaria, poverty, horrendous infant mortality rates, and "a strong feeling of resentment, of bitterness, and revolt against a regime (Ottoman) whose 450 years in the land has reduced the nation to the brink of disaster". He wrote that thousands of Albanian women and girls were carried off to stock harems of the Empire and that only one in one hundred young Albanian men had returned "from the plague spots of the East" to which they had been sent. Erickson reported the people were "united in feeling that Turkish rule in Albania had been an unspeakable curse" (Erickson 115-19). In 1924 Midhat Frashëri (respected Albanian diplomat and one of the fathers of modern Albanian nationalism) spoke of the Turkish occupation, saying, "May that administration be loathed for eternity. Cursed be the hour that brought the Asian conqueror to Albania, that left us five centuries behind our friends. Five centuries passed us by like a hovering dark cloud, a heavy burden upon our mind and conscience, a dark age that distorted every sense of humanity and every honorable human virtue"
-We had a University in 1380 in Durres. To show the idea: Germany has opened the first university 6 years after Durrës (Heidelberg University).
      - We had 6 cities fully developed as much as Florence, Venice, Marseille or Paris. (Durres, Shkodra, Drishti, Lezha, Berat and Preveza)
-Drisht together with its library were burned down, the library being one of the biggest in the Balkans containing old Albanian documents, never to be seen, thanks to the Turks burning them
      - We had our aristocratic class with eight generations of families (Balshaj, Topiajt, Muzakaj, Kastrioti, Arianit, Zebenisht, Swords and Dukagjini) tied to marriage to the Habsburgs and Bourbons.
      - We had our humanist philosophers who were "slain" in Europe with their ideas and were advisers to the imperial families in Hungary, Italy and Austria. (Gjon Gazhuli, Pal Engjëllli, Leonik Tomeo and Gjon Durrsaku)
      - Our cities had statutes and governed with Democracy, while the American word was governed by Indians Cherokee or Aztec tribes who still smoked human blood and lived as cannibals.
      - In Durrës, intellectualism was so high that we documented in the XII century for the first time the protest mark of an Orthodox metropolis, who wrote to Constantinople, against slavery 300 years before Europe began as a debate.
      - In Durres trade was up to Tunisia, Ukraine and France as far as V-VII century. For example, Scandinavian countries still lived by worshiping the tree or mountain.
      - The Church of Albania had issued the cardinal (and the cardinal was no small thing then).
But what happened next? Nothing! It is simple, the Turks came.

Ottoman chronicle Tursun on the war against the Albanians (Conquest of Elbasan 1467): "With the help of the great Lord, they (Ottomans) conquered every castle they found. They took great plunder - plunder that spoke (Albanian locals) and plunder that spoke not. Of the (Albanian) boys who looked like angels and the (Albanian) girls who looked like houries (beautiful virgin), this verse could be said: 'If one should see the houries among the tents, he would certainly say they were from paradise.' If such beauties looking into your face caused one to change his mind, they were given for three to four hundred akçe. Every tent was stuffed with plunder. The infidel adult males (Albanian christians), however, were commanded to be given over to the authorities; so from every post, processions of slaves bound in chains were brought before the triumphant padishah. Three youths and three elders were brought before the sword and massacred. Their thirsty souls were granted to savor the whine of annihilation that flower from the spouts of the drenched swords. There wete places where under the legal sword three thousand, four thousand, and seven thousand infidels fell. The piled corpses transformed valleys into hills. The blood flowed in open fields like the Amu Darya River."

Do you know that most Albanians from Kosovo come from malesor tribes? What should the incidents you mention prove? Without the Ottomans, Albanians would be a fly-shit in the Balkans. If you want to hear war stories I can write you mine from 20 years ago. What did important Albanian Christian as Fishta and Vasa said about the Ottomans? What was the opinion of de Rada about the Ottomans? The influence and benefit of the Ottoman Rule is too huge to be against them as Albanian. The difference between you and me is, that I got my opinion when I studied my History, neutral, without propaganda (so I am also proud of the rich history of the Albanian Christians in Italy and Greece).but you are trapped in your pseudo religious ideology. The real problem here is that most of the 'turkophile' Albanians are radical Muslims, who like Ottoman History for religious Reason. All Albanians should stand up for the Ottoman Empire and cherish its History. It's the greatest Part of our History.

      Salam/Hello Aneeza. Kaise ho?
I am Albanian, and know some Urdu. If I tell you that there are many similar words between Albanian and Urdu. The connection is obvious Albanian borrowed words from Turkish, thus Arabic and Persian, just like Urdu, where Hindustani speaking muslims borrowed words from Persian, Arabic and Turkic languages.
      You mentioned about taya.
In Urdu you also say "khala" referring to the maternal aunt. We have a similar word "halla" in Albania, but we refer to the paternal aunt. So again similar meaning but from the opposite parent.
You have the word "sabun" in Urdu and in Turkish which is "sapun" in Albanian. And so many other words of Arabic-Persian origin. Dukhan-dyqan (shop). You call sugar as "chini" but also "shakar". In Albanian is "sheqer" (sounds like shecher or sheker). We use the word "ilaç" (ilach) which is medicine, similar to the Urdu word Ilaj (this comes from Arabic).
And then the famous word persian word bazaar, which is often pronounced as "pazar" In Albanian but I think in Turkish as well.
Of course, in Grammar, Urdu is in essence a North Indian language, thus the word order is like Hindi, Subject + object + Verb rather than in other languages such as English where you have Subject + Verb + Object.
