  • We've all been there before - either purchasing a drum set for a loved one or for ourselves. If it isn't a display model you have to set it up, but there's no guide!
    In this video, I'll show you how to set up a drum set using the Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove drum kit, Ludwig Atlas Classic Hardware, and Zildjian S Series Cymbals - which was recently received by the Girard Academic Music Program (GAMP) 6-12 public school by the School District of Philadelphia!

    Great video! I bought my daughter a breakbeats kit for her birthday and this video was invaluable in setting it up.
    I have the bass drum and toms sounding great, but I'm still having some trouble tuning up a good snare sound.
    Nick, do you have any advice on tuning these breakbeat snares?
    Right now I have the reso really tight and the batter fairly tight.

    • @NickCostaMusic
      @NickCostaMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's so awesome - what finish did you go with? I really like how they package them with Remo pinstripes - it really helps get a decent tone out of the toms and kick.
      As for the snare - what type of sound are you going for? If you tighten the bottom head so it has little to no give (like a table top) that should help with snare response. From there, I always prefer a medium tight snare sound - with the breakbeat snare it helps provide a nice clean sound without too much ping. Make sure the points on the snare head by the tension rods are around the same pitch to get a decent tone. Finally the snares are buzzing/rattling for a long time, tighten them by turning the tuning knob on the top of the throw off. If they're too tight, the snares will be super short, almost like there's something pressing against them to mute them a bit.
      Give

      @@NickCostaMusic -we went with the Blue Azul. She loves the sparkle vintage look. She's been playing drums in school for a few years but this is her first kit. I played drums and had a set back in high school, so I have some background in setting things up, but it's been a while since I've tuned drums.
      As far as the snare sound I think that "ping" you mentioned is what I'm hearing too much of. Kind of a weird overtone or something?
      I do have the reso very tight, around almost two turns all the way round. Maybe I have the batter and snares too tight?

    • @DrummerGrrrl
      @DrummerGrrrl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@neutronrobot Unfortunately, many, many drummers are finding out that the snare drum is the weakest part of this drum set. If you continue to have problems getting a good sound from that snare drum, you might consider buying another snare drum by another manufacturer. Tama and Pearl sell really excellent low price snare drums.

    Awesome I just got my first drumset and this helped out so much! I have some questions, my kit came with some cymbals that (at least to me) seem to have a lower pitch than others ive heard and seen, is this probably just me or something else? Also the bottom cymbal of my high hat is very wobbly (the high hat also has a lower sound). And finally thing, when i use the snare and engage the beads on the bottom it kind of echoes. Thanks!

    • @NickCostaMusic
      @NickCostaMusic  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Awesome - so happy to hear you got a kit! I'll try my best to help with your questions. 1st regarding cymbal sounds - depending on brand, model, etc. they can vary in pitch. Some are high/bright, while some are low/dark. Most drum kits that come with cymbals usually don't have the greatest cymbals, though if you bought used or a package deal - they might be decent. Is there a brand name on the cymbals? 2nd regarding hi-hat - is it just the bottom hat or the entire stand? If it's just the bottom cymbal, you'll notice there's a knob on the bottom of the hi-hat perch (on the stand). You might need to adjust that so the cymbal sits on a slight angle (not too extreme!). 3rd thing regarding the snare drum - most likely needs to be tuned, as drums from the factory aren't tuned to specs. tightning up the top and bottom heads can help with the echo. Feel free to check out my snare tuning vid if you need a visual! - th-cam.com/video/P2bXaoYiQL4/w-d-xo.html
