I love the old EMD E and F locomotives. To me they are the most beautiful locomotives ever built and it’s unfortunate that there will never be streamlined locomotives like this in the future.
That's in my old stomping ground! Didn't know about the sale, but I do now, thanks to you. :) Hopefully I can catch a train or two on that line when I go back there for the holidays.
I rode the pre-Amtrak “Panama Limited”, which passed through Canton and Grenada, several times. I am happy to see that the line is still in service. South of Memphis, the maximum speed was 79 mph. I am sad to see that the ABS signals have been deactivated. I always hoped that Amtrak would run a second train from Memphis to New Orleans, that would use this route. It would be a daylight, regional run, down in the morning, back in the afternoon. It won’t happen with deteriorating track and dark territory. In 1970, the Panama flew through this area.
Shame that the old IC Mainline of Mid-America is no more. Now repeated delays because some executives decided to remove the second track between Kankakee and Carbondale. Still a nice ride. First time on the CNO I went from Chicago to Memphis to meet a girl...been married nine years this Wednesday.
Now Amtrak Trains 58 & 59 run the City of New Orleans Train with 7 Superliner coaches originally the P42DC led the Train now the SC44 & ALC-42 Siemens Chargers run the Train I usually see everyday
The late night train, the Lousiana was also nicknamed the "Chicken Bone", because the Sleeping Car porter would come into the passenger cars singing, "we are out of Fried Chicking, Conductor tell the man to lay the hammer down".
Back in the 50's, the Illinois Central was double tracked, and from Jackson to Memphis the City of New Orleans with these E8's would commonly exceed 115 miles per hour, which was fast for it's time, and no Government Regulations, regarding it's speed.
Nice shoot! Willie Nelson's version is my favorite. Where is this operation located? I may be visiting the New Orleans area in a few months. Thanks again Drayton!
They are owned by Iowa pacific along with the cars. They apparently are original IC equipment that they use for special excursions (sometimes dinner trains)
Horseshoe Railfan Iowa Pacific stores many of its passenger cars and locomotives (like the EMD E9) at their Bensenville, IL facilities (Chicago Terminal) directly west of O’Hare Airport. That’s about 5 miles directly north of where I live, so it is not unusual to see activity there ... onto the Canadian Pacific line (old Milwaukee RR). www.iowapacific.com/railroads/chicago-terminal-railway/
This current train (slrg 515) and the slrg 518 are in batesville being stored, they were ran for the Train to christmas town, and wont be back in service til next year to run it again
They should do a yearly trip along the original route. Does anyone know if it has a particular schedule or is it just sitting in a yard rusting right now?
Iowa interstate sold it to International Rail Partners on Aug 2 2018. They will operate it as the Grenada Railway through a lease purchase agreement through the North Central Mississippi Regional Railroad Authority
Just for Clarification .... Iowa Pacific (uses old Illinois Central colors) ... their passengers cars are often marked: San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad (SLRG) www.coloradotrain.com Iowa Interstate (IAIS, old Rock Island RR east-west mainline across Iowa) is a completely different railroad ! iaisrr.com
Good video but this version of the "City of New Orleans" sucks. The singers are not good and they changed the lyric to make it politically correct. Is it really bad to refer to "old black men" as such? Thumbs down on this one.
This version isn’t for everybody. But what makes this version appropriate is that the lead singer was the president of the former Grenada Railroad - and owns the trainset in this video.
"old black men" is the original lyrics from the song. It was a different era when this was written. While that may offend people today, it's unchanged from when the song was written.
Actually, it was changed in this version. What I heard in the lyric was "old grey men". I did a quick search and found that the lyric had not otherwise been changed except in this version. Other versions are sung as "old black men". I made my comment based on the fact that as far as i know it is still alright to refer to a person of color as being "black". Maybe the person singing this had another reason for changing the lyrics and the melody.

Adding the song to the video made it downright emotional. Brings a tear to the eye.
Used to see these run when I was younger
Iowa Pacific messed up but I still miss seeing and hearing those engines on a warm sunny day
I live in kankakee, so hearing the line about the train rolling out of kankakee made me smile.
Well done! You deserve all of the positive comments you get. I really enjoy watching your presentations.
I love those old trains! Thanks for uploading!
Thanks for watching!
AWESOME!!!! Couple of my mother's family worked on the IC out of Water Valley, MS. THANKS FOR SHARING!
My favorite locomotive. Thanks...
That's in my old stomping ground! Didn't know about the sale, but I do now, thanks to you. :) Hopefully I can catch a train or two on that line when I go back there for the holidays.
Back to my city’s roots......................
Really liked this video and the rendition of this song. Thanks 👍

If we had a train like this. That ran every weekend Friday-Monday from Mount Pleasent MI to Traverse City MI. It would be a blast.
This is a beautiful production. Good work.
The train was awesome. The signing that's a different story. 😱
Great video and great catch so so cool!!! Im sorry that’s in no longer a railroad. I never new this was a railroad. But great video.
Thanks for posting this Video
Thanks for uploading! I love train songs :)

Five words. Excited train guy, New York!
Beautiful train.

Why it didn't stop in Batesville and Grenada anymore? It goes through Greenwood now! It been like this since I want to say 1998
Brings back memories of riding the City, Panama Limited, and the Louisiana (other wise known as the "Milk Wagon" to the employees).
The late night train, the Lousiana was also nicknamed the "Chicken Bone", because the Sleeping Car porter would come into the passenger cars singing, "we are out of Fried Chicking, Conductor tell the man to lay the hammer down".
dat made me cry a lil bit
Awesome mate !
I love this
Willie Nelson did it better
It’s a shame there isn’t an operational IC steamer. I’m not sure if there are any

Hummm memory plays tricks on us old guys. The FRA of 79mph has been around since the 40’s
@@Dog.soldier1950 That limit only applied to routes with ATC or ATS. The Santa Fe main line would regularly go 90.
Wow! Single track in my life time
Wow
Nice shoot! Willie Nelson's version is my favorite.

Awesome!
Verry nice
Thanks for watching!
My Granfather worked for the IC for fifty years, and we could ride the passenger trains free, which we did many times.
Why is it hard to believe? I feel bad for the people who got shafted by these sham operations.
Does anyone know what happened to theses two beautiful engines? Scraped?.... Sold?.... Hopefully someone can help me
Horseshoe Railfan no idea but I want to know too

I saw them in Batesville, MS back in the spring, but don't know about now. I doubt they'll be scrapped.

I suggested this train to Dovetail Games.
Is that the old IC main? Thru Grenada MS?
Correct
They should do a yearly trip along the original route. Does anyone know if it has a particular schedule or is it just sitting in a yard rusting right now?
The Passenger Trains is now gone for the Grenada Subdivision
Their Goal is to hit 40 mph for freight and 60 mph for passenger
Only saw one exhaust per loco. Have they been modified with just one prime mover each?
I wish they could still run with steam
What type of horn does the lead unit have?
Nathan P5R24
An IC P5R24 to be exact if you are trying to find it for Trainz or something
Can you point in the direction to find this song
+a steinmann That version sucked
Why is the railroad not a part of the system anymore ?
Not sure what you are meaning with the question. What is the reference of 'the railroad' and/or 'the system'?
@@royreynolds108 I mean the Grenada railroad no loger being part og the Iowa interstate railroad system
Railroad,Preserver,2000 The Grenada Railroad was bought by a company called international rail partners.

Why the city of New Orleans don't go through Grenada no more?
They go a diffeent route, the IC downgraded this route in the 1990's
The Tracks are rusty

I read this backwards this morning. I tend to agree the original lyric is better, but I really like this rendition of the song for some reason.
Aw, come on. Screw the song, let's hear the train!!!
That song sucks.
Just this version. I like Willie Nelsons version better. Heck, I even like Michael Jacksons version.
