  • "Kanzi, can you tell who this is? Tell Sue!"
    This bonobo is a genius.
It has managed o learn human language.
Kanzi is an extraordinary ape, it was born with a talent never seen before. However, scientist wanted to see how far he could go so they submitted him to tests, each one harder than the last.
The questions were simple, but tricky.

And the story continues: Kanzi put humans to the test by making grunts, howls, barks, rumbles, and many more monkey sounds. When humans uttered no response to his noises, Kanzi came to the conclusion that humans are very stupid.

So are you telling me that after planning and conducting extensive research into the utilization of language that a common chimpanzee, without the benefit of any sort of scientific training, has concluded that a university educated doctor of science is very stupid? His hypothesis is flawed due to the nature of his experiment. He probably didn't even write down his findings. What a goof.

@@liltrashpanda174 , true. They are behaviorally VERY different. Some humans even argue that it's more likely that we descended from Bonobo's not Chimps.
---I and for one hope so since Bonobos are more peaceful.
But, it's probably more likely that some of the various different ancient humanoid species actually evolved from different apes and then some interbred.. and got us. There is even research showing that the different humanoid species interbred. (all though, there is other research saying it didn't happen.)
I don't know if researches are claiming that different humanoids evolved from different apes, but it just makes sense based on the timing. Natural evolution takes millions of years, a bunch of humanoids lived in the same areas at the same time.. it seems unlikely that they all came from one type of ape and then split off into different species fast enough to still be able to have sex.
If they did, it would be more apt to call them different races instead of different species.

As for Pan, it branched in 2 different species, Pan Troglodytes (Common Chimpanzee) and Pan Paniscus (Bonobo). The difference between Bonobo and Chimpanzee is that Bonobos are stated to start self-domesticating, which will lead, if they are not killed by humans, to a very intelligent species

It makes sense that he was able to learn the language easier than adult chimps due to the fact that his brain was still developing. It's like how if an adult never learned to speak as a child, they would struggle a lot more in learn how to speak as an adult; however, young children can learn multiple languages very easily. I'd have to assume that adult chimps would struggle a lot more to learn to communicate with humans due to their brains having already been developed, especially if they were never exposed to human language as a juvenile or young chimp. I think younger chimps whose brains are still developing and are impressionable have a much higher chance of being successful in this type of expirement because they learn so much from their environment at those ages and learn by copying and mimicking others.

Chimps are incapable of employing the type of strategy you describe. . First of all, just to build a lab in which to study humans, a chimp would have to obtain some sort of degree in science and in architecture in order to build a viable scientific laboratory capable of housing humans. Theoretically, a chimp would be detected at a human university prior to obtaining the requisite education in order to pull this off. It is my firm scientific belief that if an average human is capable of detecting a Frenchie in their class, then they are capable of weeding out a predatory chimpanzee in this type of situation.

The best answer we've come up with is to place these creatures in a safe space where we can interact with them without harming them. It's more impressive that he can visually memorize that many small buttons than the fact that he can understand the words. Dogs can understand words, and they are much smarter than dogs. You should associate the words with their spellings and see if he can read. That would take a humanlike jump in language intelligence.

Even that could reflect mere symbol matching, at least if it was small words. See if he can understand the structure of a sentence, or make an educated guess of a spelling.

People are now teaching dogs and cats to do this sort of thing with buttons. Granted, they don't have any where as many buttons. But, we're just starting.

      memorizing 3000 buttons?
so this ape is way more intelligent than most of us. just play the game "memory" with someone. some humans cant remember 16 of such pics.
you expect him to understand the structure of a sentence? maybe apes have no concept of a sentence.
we don't even try to understand a single growl of him.
there was a similar experiment with dolphins. they understood very well, they even 'talked' back.
the problem was, that the language of dolphins was way to complex for us to understand.
do we need now to redefine "intelligence" ?

A wine ago I watched a video from the creator who made his touch screen word program that he's using in this video. I can't remember who it was now but the video was amazing with the program that they created and just how intelligent kanzi is to be able to even understand how to use it. What an incredible story and to be able to see the device in use that i was lucky enough to witness being created through the technology of today, it makes it all the more special. Very cool to see.

Well, even in humans, if we don't learn language by a certain age it either becomes impossible to later or only very basic knowledge can be acquired, usually with an inability to appreciate nuances of grammar. They started his mother as an adult, so her brain had already developed past those integral stages, which made her ultimate ability very limited. Kanzi was able to get much closer to the genetic cap of his intelligence because of developing the plasticity of those parts of his brain at a close analogue to the equivalent age of humans beginning to learn language. That's why the stone age lasted so much longer for humans even when compared with the expected rate of exponential technological growth. Chimps and bonobos have been in the stone age as well for likely as long as humans have. Kanzi gives up incredible insight not just into bonobo complexity but also with human development and understanding some of the things that have led us here and what has to happen for a brain to reach the ultimate potential it was born with. Kanzi's own children and others from his future tribe descendents may show an even greater understanding of language because of having this building block to work from and what kanzi has taught us and is actively teaching his own children, just as humans teach theirs to use words and writing implementation, they use buttons and recordings.
