Asymmetrical waveforms are due to a combination of factors related to how sound is generated, captured, and processed. In acoustic instruments, asymmetry often arises naturally from the way air or energy flows through the instrument, like the breath pressure in wind instruments or the vibrating lips in brass, creating more energy on one side of the waveform. Microphones and preamps can exaggerate this by responding unevenly to positive and negative pressures. In synthesizers, asymmetry can stem from certain waveform shapes, like sawtooth or pulse waves, which are inherently imbalanced. Other factors like unipolar modulation, analog filtering, distortion, and saturation can further emphasize asymmetry by amplifying or clipping one side of the waveform more than the other.
@@Hexspa oh I see. I get it ! I actually heard that correcting asymmetrical waveforms isn’t always as harmless as we think. There was that Adam Audio video where the mastering engineer mentioned he always corrects DC offset because it can add a bit of headroom and doesn’t actually affect the sound. But Nick at Panorama in Australia did some tests and found that there CAN be subtle changes, like “smudging” or “ringing.” I wish I could remember the details offhand-I’ll have to refresh my memory on that. I’m not sure it’s wise to blindly fix DC offset on everything, especially for full mixes. There’s a difference between addressing a real DC offset problem and dealing with naturally asymmetrical waveforms. A true DC offset could indicate an issue in your system, like bad wiring, while asymmetry in waveforms can just be a natural part of certain sounds.
I think the reason why the Density module isn't in Nectar 4 is that Nectar already has the Auto-Level module (it's like Vocal Rider) which achieves the same result, just differently. Also iZotope probably wants you to buy more of their plugins even though some of them overlap lol.
Thank you for recommending the Kali Audios, the FedEx guy threw them on the ground but they sound AWESOME. I'm hearing so much more of the low mids that I wasn't catching on the Adam A7vs, it's almost like the detail of the latter distracted from that area. They feel a bit pinchy in the midrange but maybe that's why they're so good for mixing. Stereo image is fantastic feels like I have a third speaker in front of me. I have some calibration that I'm going to implement, just need to get the right cables to make it happen. Can't wait for the Mixer Brain book to release.
@@TRXST.ISSUES Kalis are designed to be a neutral reference so if they seem pinchy in the midrange either you have calibration issues / a crab has broken into your studio or neutral reference is not somthing you’re used to hearing as most monitoring solutions are more of a smiley face / designed to sound good. Flat does not always sound good. It’s simply designed to be neutral. Mixer Brian is coming in Jan ! It’s actually an online video course and not a book but there’s a lot of written content in there too and I’ll be showing how I do speaker calibration with my Kalis.
@@JeffEllisWorldwide Freaking WINNNN!! Does it really sound that much better once Sonarworks is on though? Now that we have correction tools like Sonarworks, I feel like all you need to worry about is having decent sounding speakers with a wide sweet spot and a decently treated room.
@@Nayah9 it’s not about sounding better or worse just how do we best represent what’s inside the computer in the real world. Cost effective speakers designed to be neutral are just one part of the puzzle. Speaker calibration though amazing does impart artifacts and has some downsides. The less needed the better. I do find the Kalis simply make a better mixing tool than the much more expensive options I’ve used in the past. I simply don’t know enough about speakers and acoustics to understand why that is. I just got better results faster over time after I switched
@@JeffEllisWorldwide • I think we're in agreement: You don't need super expensive speakers to get a good representation of the music. • Everyone knows at this stage that as long as you know how your speakers sound, you can make it work. • The thing is, no "reference speakers" are perfectly neutral. They all hit around the same ball park and you just pick one that suits your needs. • For me, I really enjoy the slightly emphasized bass of my KRK Rokit 8 gen3s but it's nice to have Sonarworks when I'm mixing something more mid-focused. • I've never been able to hear the artifacts while using Sonarworks, but when I'm feeling paranoid I'll set it to "Mixed" or "Linear Phase" mode which add varying levels of latency (still entirely manageable though) while removing phase shifts or pre-ringing artifacts.
The phase module couldn't have come at a better time. I'm currently working on a project with 4 full drum loop samples layered, the phase is a nightmare.
I was shocked seeing how much headroom can be gained with this phase rotation function fixing a bit assymetrial waveforms. Mind boggling. Hope there'll be some good offer for MPS suite 6 owners
I do dig that new orange wave graphic. I don't think you should tell people its from mid journey though... BILL.. You saw what the AI snobs did to Andrew Huang when he used AI on his cover artwork. Danger!
Around minute 36, while discussing the PHASE Module, an example is given with 2 kicks and how to 'phase align' them but how do we set the sidechain track in the module???? I use Ableton Live 12
In abelton there is a dropdown selector where you can set the sidechain. It’s not actually in the plugin window. It’s in the chain at the bottom where all your plugins show up on the track
I think what would be cool is instead of a slider there should be an ancient haunted undead Skelton navel vessel steering wheel looking thing that you can turn left or right depending on if you want more and less transient. And that being said the entire neutron suite should look a little bit more gothic or undead haunted skeleton vibes. thats just one persons opinion though
@@JeffEllisWorldwide hey Jeff ! will the the mixing course be availible before the black friday plugin sales ends ? If no, would you release a short list of some plugins you really like and use daily in your mixing ?
