I think English has transcended the status of being a language to be a skill. In modern world it’s important to learn certain skills like driving. Ability to speak good English has also become a necessary skill for survival. No language has been able to do this in human history.
Thats what French was for a millennia until it fell out of fashion, it was so prevelant that many courts around Europe spoke French rather than their native langauge.
@@memesins5647 Persian was a language of Mughal court who were ethnically Turks but used Persian as a court language. So when British came to India...quite naturally had to conduct business with Persianized Mughals in Persian. However, Arabic in the Middle ages was a language of scholarship because under Abbasid court ....Persian, Arab and central Asian scholars in the " House of Wisdom" of Baghdad translated Indian, Greek, Persian and Roman knowledge into Arabic which was transferred to Europe and was used in universities there. Hence making Arabic a language of scholarship. This also paved a way for European Enlightment centuries later. Fascinating stuff..

Nice video, but I think the video forgot to mention another important factor which has led to the decline of French and that is the entertainment industry. Whether it's hollywood or social media media, English has been dominating these fields. The impact of entertainment is very high on learning of languages. Most of my cousins, friends and even my little brother are fluent English speakers thanks to consummation of American and British cartoons and films. Meanwhile I have never seen or even heard of any French cartoons. And another reason that is the amount of people making migration to English speaking countries like the US, Canada, UK and Australia.

Why should Africans accept to be neo- colonized economically and culturally? In France people are proud of their language being spoken by many countries mainly in Africa but they don't respect them, they would never accept to teach their children another language other than English, Spanish or Germany.Few people start teaching their children Chinese or Japanese for economical reasons but a lot of French despise other languages, especially African or Asian languages. They feel superior to non- European countries. How could they expect Africans to keep on defending French as if it was their real mother tongue while they continue to treat them as inferiors?
If english is introduced anywhere then french will loose. french can not compete with english. Plus france is giving African countries problems neo colonialism. So it makes sense for them to remove french and introduce english.
And the military interventions of the US and the UK in the middle east are just a fantasy? It makes no sense to remove a language that has a history in a particular country to give another that has nothing to do with it an official status it's like as if in the Philippines Russian was given an official status that's why the official language in most ex french colonies is FRENCH. Another thing, is teaching English as a foreign language.

French is declining as the French speaking Africa is slowly switching to English. Britain left it's colonies after their independence but France still interferes militarily, financially and politically with it's former colonies. In next 25 years the French status will decline as English will became second language in French Africa.
I can’t stand that Macron, he encourages us in Europe to lose our traditions and spews diversity nonsense to us and patronises europe for our colonial past but he wants the francophone summit to remain vigilant on keeping French alive in their old colonies. It’s all because France has a new business plan to monetise French and he wants France to be the middle man and conduct business for their old colonies in French and to gain a commission. Diversity doesn’t matter when money is involved it seems and neither does the self hate for the colonial past. Imagine going around the world “encouraging” ex colonies to speak the language of their colonisers for a profit and to teach them to understand France culturally by trying to make them culturally similar through the language so they start adopting French in their everyday lives while preaching diversity. What a hypocrite. I think that the old colonies should be careful because just wait until they have a little disturbance and French assets are threatened and they might just find that they are subject to tactical bombing and the French foreign legion are being sent in to “evacuate French nationals”. Believe me it has happened before, I know very well, I was once sent in to evacuate these invisible French nationals.
switching to english? eh maybe, in Mali the national language used to be french until recently they started using their indigenous language as their official language after the military take over
That is not true, Britain also intervened in it's former colonies after their independence, like Nigeria, Oman or Malaysia. And the British have also military bases in Africa and around the world. And appart from the British you also have to take into account the US. Which has even more military bases and has made and makes more military interventions than any other country. But more people still learns English because the US has the world hegemony, when they lose it let's see what happens. For now, China is becoming more important and there are more and more places around the world where Chinese is taught.

I don't see any logical, practical reason why French should not be supplanted by English as the dominant language. Preserving a language that isn't serving the international community well doesn't make a lot of sense. There is a lot of whining and crying out there concerning the demise of languages but it just seems like the natural and pragmatic evolution of culture to me. Not to say that English is a "superior" language but rather that it's the best or at least one of the best languages for business communication around the world and the world really does run around business. I also frequently hear, especially among Europeans, boasting about the ability to speak multiple languages. This usually directed at Americans, as though their monolingual habits somehow make them less "educated". That's nonsense. Imagine the greatly increased efficiency of communication around the world if one needs only to understand, speak, write in 1 or 2 languages, not 5, 10 or more. That's just sound practical reason.
You must be American and monolingual (well, it is the same to issue such a statement). Languages have not been created for business communication, they are a human feature.
Then you must be that "American monolingual" because if you knew other languages you would know that a language is not just a tool. A language also carries a history and a culture, that's why many people around the world are very concerned about protecting and respecting languages and many know about the need of learning other languages to better interact with other people. If for example you are doing business with a French company and you are trying to convince them to trust you or to work with u will not get the same treatment if you accommodate them and speak French than if you expect them to accommodate YOU and speak English to YOU. Using and having different languages doesn't decrease efficiency, on the contrary; it creates more opportunities for people around the world and it can be more efficient to use a different language depending on the situation. For example, if two companies from Mexico and Germany negotiate in one or each other's language it can be even more efficient for them rather than using English.
The reason why English is widely used is not because it has some features that make it "better" for business. But because the most important companies in the world are American.
I want to learn all of the languages in the world as I can except French. I don't know why I can't feel the French language its sounds are very ugly for me.

It's all about what you can earn from learning a language. English is widely spoken worldwide because it's a rich language in Science, technology, knowledge and also business. Here's some historical facts about this issue: Unfortunately during 19th century, the French population barely had any growth in comparison with other European states, the proof is that only a few French emigrated to America or different places compared with millions of other Europeans who did that. The French population only grew by 8.6% between 1871 and 1911, while Germany's grew by 60% and Britain's by 54%. For four years in the 1890s, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births. During the colonial era, less than 120 thousand French settled in America, unlike 1.5 million from Spain and 950 thousand from Britain and Ireland. In WW1, France lost 10% of its male population, and millions of potential births were lost. So, to sum up, France always had deep demographic problem that whose consequences could be reflected on this particular issue.

This video only covered the issue surface level. France was very reluctant to let go of its colonial power over it ex-colonial and screw them over in many ways, even causing coups and replacing rightful presidential candidates with pro-France ones. Not to mention, the brutal massacres(the French killed 1.5 million Algerians they committed on groups that fought for independence like the Algerians or how they set up the Hutu/Tutsi divide by deciding Tutsi were descended from White people (they weren't) and only giving them positions of power which caused resentment and led to the Rwandan genocide or the religious divides they stirred in the Levant that led to Lebanon (named after the predominantly Christian Mount Lebanon region) becoming its own country due to being predominantly Christian at the time and would eventually lead to the Lebanese civil war. Not to mention the CFA Franc situation and how France heavily controls the currency of many French speaking African countries. France continues to screw over many African countries which has led to the France and the French language being seen as the enemy in many African countries where there already is a native predominant spoken language like Maghrebi Arabic in North Africa. Some of the information is inaccurate though. Rwanda hasn't dropped French, it has just been promoting English and Swahili more as those are the languages of its neighbors that it does trade with. It's also wrong about Canada. I used to live there and the number of Bilingual English-French speakers has increased outside of Quebec and inside. More native English speakers outside and inside of Quebec can speak French than at any point of Canadian history. What people do is that they count native language and home language and use that to fearmonger about the death of French to make more drastic laws concerning French in Quebec. So more people can speak French now than any point in history, but because those people might have been born in Morocco and speak Arabic natively, but since French is an official language in Morocco, you learned French fluently and so you use that to immigrate to Quebec. Even though you speak French fluently, on a Canadian census on native tongue, it will register you as a non-native French speaker because you learnt French afterwards. Or if you have Moroccan parents and you speak mostly Arabic at home, but your parents also taught you French, the fact that you also speak French doesn't matter. Since your home language is mainly Arabic, it's registered that your home language is not French. Or if your parents are Ukrainian immigrants for example and don't speak French to you at all at home, but living in Quebec, your schooling and social life is carried out entirely in French, it still doesn't matter on the Canadian census, Ukrainian is still put as your home language so the census is very restrictive and doesn't fully explain the situation. The same has happened with English, as many Canadians in Canada were originally born outside of Canada, they speak a language with their children at home that isn't English which causes the amount of Canadians who speak English at home to drop as well, but English is by far the dominant language in Canada, amongst immigrants and especially their children who often speak their parents' language with their parents and many can't speak their parents' tongue, but only understand it.

This is only the full fault of the French, if you are a tourist and visit let's say for example Quebec and don't speak french see how they treat you. No one like to incorporate themselves with rude people and this is the reality of France and French People!!! Hence the reason people don't want to learn it and English is more widely spoken in the international language and is economically and diplomatically more useful and also in people future careers!!!
I'm a Quebecer and I see a major issue with your comment. The reason why people answer you with such a cold tone when you speak English in Qc, it's cause English is the colonial language we've endured for 200 years and even today, we still live in a country where every measure to create a structure where French will be able not only to defend itself against English on a continent that is 98% English speaking but also to thrive since it's closely tied to Quebec's culture, is perceived by a fascist move by the rest of the country to pick on the English minority when in fact, it's the total opposite. In the meantime, Canada do absolutely nothing to help its francophone minorities and cuts the funding to its institutions each time they have the chance to do it. For us, the harq question is is the following one: where exactly do you draw the line on everyday discussions with tolerating everyday discussions with people that are tourists and just want to enjoy the place and when to stand your ground to English people that immigrated to Canada thinking they'd spend their life living in an English country or to English Canadians feeling entitled to impose their language everywhere in Canada... By that statement, I don't mean to diminish the colonial impact French has had on First Nations languages, but the colonial dynamic in Canada is English as the prime colonial English (colonization the French speaking population and on pretty much all the First Nations) while for First Nations English and French are both colonial languages. It's also why English is seen as "the international language", they created the most successful colony: the US. Which is from a settler population of British population descent and yes, also with other people of the world who integrated the American society but by integrating it, also integrated the English American heritage. Great Britain replaced a territory's native population by its own population on several territories: New Zealand, Australia, the US and Canada. While France did it mostly in New France which is now Québec and French Canada (and again, it was only 70 000 people when New France was ceded to Great Britain after 150 years) and also tried to do it in Algeria but didn't succeed (and that's a good thing they didn't succeed). The rest of the French colonies was France trying to indoctrinate other nations of the world to believe their culture was a lesser one than the French one and to force them to abandon it. I'm actually glad these nations are affirming themselves once again. That's the main difference between English and French colonialism, France's main objective was only to steal resources from countries while Great Britain's was to replace the local population by it's own. The French did it in Canada only when they realized they would never be able to maintain its colony to the British if they didn't start doing it. In 1664, after 60 years of colonialism, the US had 200 000 people while New France only had 8 000 people. Great Britain was just the best at colonization out of the twos... But is it really something we want to congratulate by keeping English as the international language? We should create a neutral language out of several roots and different languages that exist throughout the globe and make this language the international one. But the situation in Canada cannot be compared with French in Africa because it's not the same colonial reality. The Canadian one is more complex than simply overthrowing the language of the former colonizer which is the case in Africa (and once again, I'm with them on that move). It's having a population that descends from the French colonization project oppressing First Nations and the population that descends from the English colonial project oppressing the French population and a lot more harshly, the First Nations.
French is making a decline even in Algeria.

@Nothinghere-p3e I'm from India and we are taught English because there is an economic incentive to learn English, but if none of the Anglo countries was a global superpower there would be no incentive to follow it anymore and eventually the state would've switched to native languages for official work and higher education. Canada and Australia would have still spoken English but South Asia, Nigeria, etc would have probably abandoned.

Exactly bro, Even French tourist have to speak English when they go to other countries because when they speak French foreigners couldn't understand them.
You are wrong. French is still taught in Vietnam. French retains a strong influence on Vietnamese education and society despite the rise of English language education facilitated by American-influenced globalization. The number of schools and university programs reimplementing or teaching French has greatly increased since the first decade of the 21st century. This is in large part due to government policies promoting the knowledge of more than one foreign language, with French and English as priority second languages. French also continues to be regarded as a cultural language in Vietnam, with its usage associated with the elite society and links to family tradition and national history, while English and other foreign languages are regarded as commercial vernaculars used with foreigners. The language also continues to be used as a working language in the medical, scientific, and diplomatic fields.

It's all about what you can earn from learning a language. English is widely spoken worldwide because it's a rich language in Science, technology, knowledge and also business. Arabic is very important because it's the language of the Islamic world, some 2 billion people and gives exclusive access to an ocean of knowledge of the Quran, history, philosophy, poetry and Islamic tradition. Chinese is becoming more and more important in trade and business and will soon become Indispensable in technology and science.
French doesn't give exclusive access to some form of knowledge, is not an important language for doing business. No wonder why people are not willing to waste their time learning it...

French is a beautiful language, but is only useful in France tbh. And i completely understand why countries in Africa are dumping the language, unfortunately, France’s greed, terror and racism (back in their own country) has not helped in keeping their language alive outside of France. The fact they speak of liberty so much yet rule with a fist if u don’t fit into their mould is hypocrisy in itself. So sad they cannot even see that let alone accept that reality.
Only useful in France ?! Kinshasa is the city with the highest amount of french speakers in the world. In many african countries, a lot ot people don't even know the native tongue of their ancestors and only speak French. It's an official language in 29 Countries. More than 200 million people are using it on a daily basis. And please stop with the imaginary racism. Here's some historical facts about this issue:
Unfortunately during 19th century, the French population barely had any growth in comparison with other European states, the proof is that only a few French emigrated to America or different places compared with millions of other Europeans who did that.

If I have to learn languages aside from my native language (in my opinion).
I'd learn English for global businesses, entertainment and science.
I would learn Spanish because it's my favorite sounding language (in my opinion) Spanish sound are more beautiful than French.
I'd learn classical latin and greek because learning languages is my hobby however it may be very hard to learn.
I'd never learn French because it's not used globally as English does (in my opinion) Spanish may be more used and more speakers than French. Second thing French sounds are very ugly to my ears. I'd learn Chinese instead of French.
Well said. The French have a lot of blood on their hands.
Even English is a colonial language . Most countries colonised by french are turning to english

Cameroon spoeak English Too in Ancient british Cameroon. French is spoken ancient French Cameroon. There was two Cameroon
