Photography in the Snow | Campervan Fail

  • I took the camper van out to shoot some woodland photography. There was a small amount of snow forecast, but the forecast was way off and instead, there was a blizzard. I shot some large format 4x5 film as well as an image with y 5D MKIV before getting the camper van stuck in the snow, which almost ended in disaster, twice.

Drive in snow with summer tires and risk it knowing it is stupid. Call the insurance company when you obviously get stuck... In Norway you would not only not get help from your insurance company, you would get a hefty fine from the police for being an idiot on summer tires.

I am an American who has been been binge-watching your videos for the past month. I love your sense of adventure, honesty and wonderful images. One surprising (completely unexpected) benefit is that you take my mind off the insanity that is going on in my country right now. So thanks not only for helping me to "see a composition" but also for keeping me sane!

    • @davidfearn8635

Well, the only thing I might question with the LF shot is the use of Velvia 100, with its colour cast. Portra, Ektar, Provia, or Velvia 50 might have done interesting different things with the colour, and you can always adjust the colour balance in post once scanned to remove the red cast of V100. Otherwise, large format cameras handle adverse conditions in many ways better than digital - snow being a case in point (e.g. changing lenses is easier, and so what if the camera leaks) - and it's great to see TH using the Intrepid.

This is one of my favorite episodes! The photos are exquisite, but your adventure in the snow is what I'll most remember. Truthfully, for a moment I was expecting to hear a sickening crunch of colliding metal. However, I'm happy that disaster was averted by mere inches. Thanks, Thomas, for reminding me to keep the adventure magical!

I've been watching your channel for awhile, thanks for continually inspiring me. Your landscape photography is truly incredible. Yet, I've noticed you are trusting your eye at more and more abstract images, and they are perfection! They have a felt-sense experiential quality to them that stir subtle emotions within and convey the presence of a moment at the pinnacle of its potential. In short, sheer magic! (My first youtube comment ever!) I thoroughly enjoyed this composition of the adjacent layered branches, the softness of resting snow, and an exposure choice that helped to reveal the mystery and beauty of what many others would have just walked past and left unnoticed. Loved this one! Cheers!

As soon as you said, "Its snowing" and "Blizzard" and "I am going to another place to get another picture" I knew it was gonna be a bad day for you. Then you topped it off with "I dont have winter tires" I was shaking my head. One minor mistake after another. At least you have cellphone signal. Even the equipment to save you said it was too dangerous. If you were hiking, it could have been a life threatening event. Be safer out there.

You might want to research modern snow/ice tires. :) On ice, modern snow/tire tires do a pretty good job

wow. guys. Do some research on modern winter tires. Do a youtube search even. Step in to the 2010s :) Often proper winter tires go just fine on ice. I'm sorry you guys dont know that.

You really dont like being corrected do you? Studded Winter tyres, yes, non studded would as everyone has commented likely struggle. And yes we get big dumps of snow here in BC Canada.

Don't think winter tyres would have made a difference there.

I agree, a bit of salt & sand perhaps for a little stretch, just to lend traction.

Studded winter tires would've done the trick just fine... But for the british isles i guess euro non-studded tires are the norm so I'd pack some snowchains instead

A lot of the photography youtube channels out there seem action-packed and ADHD fueled. I love videos like this. They're much more Sunday-morning-cup-of-tea-and-a-good-book.
