Scoring Old Paper Money from the Bank - Saved some gems from being shredded!

  • Every single time I go into my local bank branches, I always ask the same questions:
    "Do you have any pennies?"
    "Do you have any 50-cent pieces or old dollar coins?"
    "Anything strange or unusual?" and,
    "Do you have any old paper money?"
    Most of the time the answer to any of these questions is "No, sorry, we don't have anything today." Well, this time the answer was, "Yes, we have a bunch - how much do you want?"
    Turns out they had $1,015 dollars of it! And I took it all! Let's take a look and see what we got this time!

    Great video! I always enjoy seeing those old Canadian banknotes. Birds of Canada banknotes can still circulate in stores. An old man had a 100 dollars bill 1988 and wanted to buy something at McDonalds. The young employees saw that bill and were very confused. They were looking for their manager. I talked to that old man and asked him if I could have that 100 dollars bill, and I told him that I will give him my modern money. We exchanged it and I paid that old bill for the exact face value. That made my day, and that old man waited less because of me.

    My bank never seems to have anything special when I ask... I did score a "scenes of Canada" $20 note a while back though... An older gentleman paid with it at Harvey's and I was behind him in line and asked for it. 😂
    The cashier seemed relieved to be rid of it... I think she thought it was fake.

      @CADRollHunter  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's too funny - I had the same thing happen once at a store, where the customer in front of me was trying to pay with a $5 bill - it was one without the security strip. She was adamant it was a fake!

    • @CADRollHunter
      @CADRollHunter  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, just face value. Now, some banks won't sell it to you, since they're supposed to turn them in (like pennies). But some will - and there's no risk, really. If I don't actually want to keep them, I can just deposit them!

      I like the bank notes too, plus I kinda like them better when they are not mint. I mean it’s better if they are newer; though I prefer them to have lived a little before they are done, or in a collection. More mystique. You wonder about their history, who put that fold in them, this and that sorta thing.

    That Journey series 5 looks like it's a 'white star' variety with white dots on the blade of the hockey stick. It's a minor issue and not considered an error, and doesn't add value, but it's interesting nonetheless! Check pg 323 of your catalogue.

      Dan - great eye! Yes, you are right. It's one of the affected HP prefix notes. I had forgotten entirely about that variety! I had to take the note out to have a look. It's very hard to see, even under magnification. The one variety I do remember to check in that series is the $10 note without the dot/circle, which is much easier to spot!
