Did I get a deal on this collection of old paper money? Or did I just throw good money after bad?

- In this video we're going to look at a stack of OLD CANADIAN PAPER MONEY I got the chance to pick up. I paid 2x face value for the bills. That migh make it a bargain for some bills, but maybe not for others. Some old currency is only worth face value - it all depends on condition, of course, Let's have a look together and see if I got a great deal, or if I overpaid!

My favorite series of notes were the 1937 series notes. However my favorite note ever if I had to pick only one is the $50 Scenes of Canada with the RCMP Musical Ride on the back. I saw that show when I was a little kid and its a memory permanently engraved in my mind. It brings me back to my childhood instantly when I see it. This was such a good pickup of notes. Lots of history in all the notes and lots of things many people will overlook.
I'm completely with you on the Musical Ride $50. That's also my favourite. The colour and detail on the back was incredible. Thanks so much for watching!
My favorite note is the $50 bill from the 1954 series. For Canada I collect the 1 and 5 cent coins. I've been able to find several semi-key and key dates. My best Canadian is the 1875-H Small Date 5 cent silver in VF-EF I picked up a few years ago. But there are finds to be had. Once I picked up a lot of junk silver. In it was the 1875-H Large Date 5 cent silver, but it's been holed.
That $50 is one I don't have. As for finding a nice older coin in junk silver - that's pretty awesome. (I might have a few similar finds in an upcoming video!).
There is a saying. "It is better to have it and not need it. Then to need it and not have it".
True that!!
Wow! another great pickup! My favourite series is probably the Birds of Canada simply for the back of the note. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! Those are some beauties, for sure!
This video got me thinking about the history of the 1 and 2$ denominations in banknotes. Did they completely leave circulation or do they pop up now and then? How common/uncommon were dollar coins before the loonie? When did the switch in popularity between coins and banknotes occur?
Retailers won't accept the $1 and $2 bills anymore, so they left circulation pretty quickly after their coin counterparts were introduced, even though many are still legal tender. The $1 and $2 coins were pretty much embraced right away without any significant push-back. Before the loonie, however, the older nickel dollars didn't really circulate. It would have been an odd sight.
Love the 54 series. My favorite.
Just found a 1950 KG6 canadian quarter in beautiful condition at a Coinstar reject till. Gotta Love it. ❤😅
You gotta love free CoinStar silver! Nice!!
I think you did well with purchase. Value is there and more for sure. As a currency searcher one feels lucky enough to simply inspect each old bill one comes across. Congrats. Yesterday, I bought a 1954 $1 and determined it does not have the devil's face feature. It's a 1954 BABN (JRB, LR) T/M prefix. This is my first Canadian $1 bank note in my collection. Thanks. Keep up the good work.
@OgirCoins - that's cool that you've added some Canadian paper to your collection! Welcome to the club. Just be careful... it's addictive!! ;)
@@CADRollHunter Exactly...I know it can be a wild ride collection the beautiful currency. I think maybe I'll take note of certain bills (with higher values) to really be on a lookout for before buying more. Don't know if I should invest in the banknote book like yours yet, though.
Great vid! I work as a bank teller and every so often i would get clients come in and deposit crisp old canadian notes. I would withdraw them for myself at the end for face value! even for coins to i see alot of interesting coins and bills and get first dips on them!
That's awesome! I'll bet you've gotten some great stuff!
LOVE the $2 with the Robin reverse but my overall favorite series is the 1954.
Thanks so much for watching, and for leaving a comment. I appreciate it!
I think you did great. What a wonderful pick-up. I am a fan of the older bills. I have a few myself. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Tom! I agree - was very happy to add these to my collection!
I collect coins and banknotes. Canada has some of the best of both! I love the older series notes from the 30's back, but I do have plenty from the 60's, 70's, 80's, and newer. I definitely think you got a good deal. Really nice, informative video my friend!
Thanks so much - I appreciate it. I'm glad you're enjoying my videos. Thanks for stopping in and leaving a comment!
I do have few older bills, but I don’t actively collect bills. My favourite bills are the 1954 reverse designs
Thanks for watching! I do love the artwork on some of the older Canadian bills. I agree those 1954s are beautiful.
Hey CAD Roll Hunter, nice pick up. By the way the allegory on the 1954 $5 Bill represents freedom
Hey, Bruce - I can't seem to find any reference to Freedom for that 1937 $5 note. Here's what the Saskatoon Coin Club has listed:
$1 - Agriculture
$2 - Harvest
$5 - Electric Power
$10 - Transportation
$20 - Modern Inventions
$50 - Fertility
$100 - Commerce & Industry
$1000 - Security
@@CADRollHunter Yes that's true. I eroneously gave the meaning behind the 1954 $5 bill. LOL
@@NumisCanadawithBruce Lol! No worries! But you did get me doing more research!!
I love your videos even though I don't speak English often (except at school). I live in Quebec and I speak French. For my part, I like to collect all types of currency regardless of their country, but I love banknotes dating from the 50s to the 70s to the bank note Canada. I think you made a good find if I can put it like that. Don’t give up your videos.
Merci beaucoup! I appreciate you watching. Thanks so much!
@@CADRollHunter
And you, which province do you live?
@@eloiloranger7362 I'm in Southwestern Ontario.
Collect coins and banknotes when possible. 1954 series is probably my favorite, 73 series a close second
Thanks for weighing in. I appreciate you watching!
Love that $5 bill with the King on it.
Me, too. I love seeing these old notes from the 30s. They're very hard to come by these. I was happy to see that one in the stack!
I have been watching you for a while. My favourite series is the 1935. I do have a complete set of shinplasters as well. Took me 30 years to build. I live in Paris, so will look to see if there are any shows up your way this summer.
I'd love to build a full set of the 1935s... some are a bit pricey - particularly the French bills. I have a few, but not in great condition. Thanks for watching!
@@CADRollHunter I have the English up to the $25. That one is in about F.
I have a $1 in French, but it is in poor condition.
@@tomsmith5885 Very nice. I think the $20 with Princess Elizabeth is a bucket-lister for me!
@@CADRollHunter My $20 is in nice condition, but does have one pinhole. Still, I am happy to have it.
The 70s ones are soo nostalgic
For me, too. That's what money looked like when I was a kid!
@@CADRollHunter same here! Was born in 77, the golden years!
A lot of nice bills, James! Have to love a hobby that earns you CASH! 😁
Well... theoretical cash, in any case! I have to be able to let go of some of this stuff to realize that potential! We'll see!!
WAIT WHAT!? A 1967 centennial dollar with a SERIAL NUMBER? An asterisk one at that? I didn't even know that was a thing. I've never seen one.
They're out there for sure!!
@CADRollHunter Cool stuff. I love learning more! Also the whaling $2 is great. The queen looks so pretty on there and the inuits getting ready to harpoon a whale is a cool scene. Good stuff!
The 1954 series are my favourite but I don't collect bills.
You're definitely more disciplined than me. I probably need to narrow down what I collect!!
Good Pickup! I Think you did well. Cheers
Thanks so much for watching!
I do mostly US coins and some bank notes. The only Canadian notes I have are the Dominion of Canada 25Ct bill vf condition.
I love those 'shinplaster' notes! Thanks for watching and for dropping a comment!
I have a 1986 Canadian $2 bill as well as one of the Centennial $1 notes with the 1867-1967 as the serial number.
Those are some nice Canadian notes for your collection!
@@CADRollHunter thank you I also just found at this indoor flea market some Canadian $1 coins of the nickel variety and a 50 cent coin and a giant nickel which I’ve never seen before. It must have been some sort of commemorative coin
@@MathewPoynter Very cool. Was the giant nickel a version of the 1951 Commemmorative? They made large replicas of that year's coin.
@@CADRollHunter yup that’s exactly what it is
I love the 1937 paper money. Any premium for that 1937 being off center on the front?
It would certainly fetch a premium if the design was clipped. Not sure. I think in those years the bills were cut by hand, so there's a lot of variation.
@@CADRollHunter ah! Very cool, great vid as always
Onetime I ordered some coins from eBay, and he sent three bills with it, a 1, a 5, and a 10, I don't know if it was a bonus or he sent them to the wrong address, I bought from so many vendors I wasn't 100% sure which vendor I got it from, and I didn't even think it might be a mistake till a few days later, I ended up giving the bills to my stepdad because he collects old stuff in general and I don't collect bills
Very strange - I'm glad someone got to enjoy them!
1937 series is my favourite. Knowing what dealers pay, I would have to say you over payed.
If I was comparing my purchase price to what dealers would pay, you'd be absolutely correct. I'm really just looking at what I'd otherwise have to pay a dealer, or retail price, if I wanted to pick these up. I think I did alright there!
@@CADRollHunter True
1937😊😊
