This video was largely inspired by real world acts of compassion and solidarity. Whereas I've seen the internet mostly focus on the few people fighting over toilet paper and hording groceries, over the past few weeks, I've also seen healthcare workers being applauded as they headed off to work, people who offered to buy groceries for those who are more vulnerable than they are, who checked on their elderly neighbors who might have gotten lonely. I've seen people dedicate songs and poems to each other, and start all kinds of local, regional, and national initiatives to offer support to suffering individuals, families, and local businesses. As one of our ministers stated today; we may have to keep our distance, but we're closer than ever. In what ways have people in your community come together? Showed kindness? Offered support? Let us know below and help each other trough these troubled times!

My property manager called me, not about April's rent, but just to ask if I was ok and if I needed anything, like food. He was calling all of the residents to double-check on us.
We all live in a low-income affordable housing project. We're the vulnerable - the hourly workers, the elderly, the disabled. I started crying, to hear him not harping about the rent, but instead to offer a hand in kindness.
      Goodness still shines bright.

I've been checking up on friends and family, my mom is extremely worried and calling up on her faith in god, watching a lot of ridiculous videos on here. Which I'm trying to calm her down and tell her that everything is going to be okay. It's not healthy to worry about everything and that the world is going to okay.

In the following Days after WHO's advisory, and as the Pandemic unfolded, I recalled an earlier video you published on Chenobyl and How the World became a Risk Society.

The families who suffer. You hear, it only kills old people. But, what is with your parents, grandparents, neighbors.

Sadly, this is nothing new. When HIV/AIDS started wrecking havoc in the late 70's/early 80's, those in power dismissed the whole thing as merely a "blessing in disguise that was purging unwanted elements from society" (to put it lightly), as if those people weren't human beings to begin with. By the time they realized anybody could get the virus regardless of lifestyle preferences, it was already too late.

When there are 65000 dead, how can anyone talk about any specific person who has suffered. What makes one person's grief greater than the other's. In this war, we are not individuals fighting for our ourselves, we are humans fighting to save all of us. All of us are together in this and will be remembered as such. The people lost in this cause will be given mass memorials for their sacrifice to humanity as a whole.

One of the most eloquently expressed video essays reflecting on the nature of humanity during a pandemic, of which is best aptly said by the video's narrator.

    ---
"By zooming in on a multitude of individuals stories, Contagion, more than anything, shows us the humanity of a global pandemic. It shows how the institutions that so often seem formal and impersonal, that seemed to have failed us, are also just made up of people, most of whom are struggling to know and do what is right, who too are scared., who too are flawed and act selfishly.
It shows how experts struggle not because they are incompetent, but because they too are facing an unprecedented event, for which they have to figure out what protocols need to be enforced, and which have to be broken. All the while navigating a variety of political games, bureaucratic constraints, and other outside interests.
    ---
It shows how people accept misinformation not because they are ignorant or unintelligent, but because they are desperate, and frightened, and yearn for some security in uncertain times. It shows how people can turn to violence not because they are vicious or greedy but because they feel they have no other choice to protect those they care about. And, perhaps above all, it reminds that every fatality is just not a number added to the total count of a statistic, its the loss of a human life. It's a family in grief. And that a prolonged quarantine isn't just a strategic course of action, its also a loss of time that is never given back.
    ---
But as we see how the scientists create a vaccine, and the world slowly refinds its balance, the film also provides us with a shimmer of hope. And this I believe, might be the real reason that Contagion is so popular in times like these. For besides reflecting on the trauma of we're experiencing today, it also shows how cataclysmic events are not just about society falling apart, they are also about mankind coming together. For while a global pandemic reveals the fragility of modern society, and the structural flaws in our system, it also reveals the resilience of the human spirit.
    ---
It shows that when things ultimately return to normal, and they will, its not just because the virus has run its course. It will be because of those individuals who, through hard work and sacrifice, stood bravely against not only the danger of a deadly virus, but also against the dangers of fear, uncertainty and chaos, who faced an uphill, unfair battle, and fought it anyways, driven only by the faith that their effort will not be in vain, who did their best under circumstances in which no one can really know what the right course of action is. Its in these acts of selflessness, perseverance and solidarity to each other, whether they be in the grand effort to save humanity, or in the small acts to simply maintain it, that we find a source of strength stronger than any threat that seeks to defy it.

I re-watched it in early February, when it was mostly still unfolding in China. I was paying attention to the scary parts like it was some kind of playbook - the numbers, the fatality rates (thank God Covid-19 illness isn't like Contagion's MEV-1), the quarantine efforts, the mass panic. I understand why you wouldn't want to watch it now.
But his analysis makes me want to re-watch it for the humanity - all those kindnesses and sacrifices. That is just as real and powerful, and is happening on a greater scale now than was shown in the movie. I'm clinging to that as a way to combat my fear of this all. We're all scared together. We can all be kind together.

This, like all your video essays of old, is profound and beautiful and I find myself in a state of tranquility and contentment every time I watch one. Personally, I have made an effort to call those that I love who live alone and may feel more lonely than me. I have seen people perform small concerts with whatever instrument they have at home across rooftops. I’ve seen stores take precautionary measures and find ways to keep their business afloat. I’ve seen content creators like yourself whose audience goes to them for a sense of contentment and joy during gray days use their voices to send hope and warmth to the millions despite their circumstances; whether it be a few words of hope, a livestream raising money for COVID-19 charities, or a funny video. On a similar note relating to your comment, LSOO, I think it’s oddly ironic and reassuring to know that despite recent years on the internet being filled with chaotic information and isolation, it seems that real world isolation had turned the internet to a source of support and action.

I am currently working as a Domino's Delivery Expert. According to the State of Texas I am considered an Essential Infrastructure Worker. In all honesty, I feel like it could either be fate or pure luck that I'm still alive. I don't really consider myself a frontline worker. That's all the medical practitioners and service workers treating the ill. If anything I'm more like one of the pilots from the Berlin Airlift. I'm not technically in a war but if I can keep people from going outside for food that might be enough. People think I'm stupid or fearless to keep driving during these times. Afterall, I have to be to deliver pizzas during a pandemic, right? Well in earnest, I'm just almost wetting myself. At one point I yelled at a kid to keep the door closed as I set food down on a chair. But after a while I figured out a way to do my job. Rather than act like everyone is contagious and out to get me, I instead internalize that I might be the one with the Virus, and have to keep others from catching it. It's the only way for me to stay calm and helps me be kinder and braver than I really am. And that should be our approach. Be kind and donate to your local food banks. Donate to hospitals to purchase more PPE, or make some for yourself and the medics on the front lines. Stay at home if you can, and wash your hands. Use delivery options if available. We may not come out of this the same way we got in...but we may come out stronger. And remember anytime you get up in the morning, say these nine words:
"I am alive and I still have my humanity."

A virus can't see race, sex, religion, nations and borders. It only sees people. To think of all the deaths that have occurred over such a trivial cause as two animals in the wrong place at the wrong time frightens me. We have to rely on our common human spirit to get through this. The thing we can take away from this is that politics, economics, education and military strength is all a part, and not separate from the human experience. Stay safe everyone! Love from Australia

As always, I am grateful for your thoughtful essay. It is one of the reasons I am a Patreon supporter to your much-needed channel. I am glad I saw the essay before it was (briefly) taken down by a copyright claim. My hypothesis is that that TH-cam and perhaps Warner Brothers are hyper-sensitive to the probability that there are certain malevolent individuals who are using this opportunity to sew even more dischord and misinformation into an already troubled world, so they are reflexively taking the precaution of taking videos down to make sure more harm is not being spread.
Even if that were the case, I wish they could calibrate their process to flag content BEFORE it goes live, and in the case of ethical, reliable, and verified content-producers such as LSOO could get some privileged treatment or the benefit of the doubt.
For what it's worth, I am glad your essay is out in the world again. Stay safe and keep making the world a better place with your ideas.

I wish things will fare better for everyone soon. Most governments may have been rattled and caught off guard by what's happening and what happened, but let's all hope that they are learning from being thrown at the deeper end of the water.
