I used to use Servisol Foam Cleanser 30 for cleaning electronics cabinets etc. Amazing stuff, doesn't seem to damage anything but lifts all the grime out. Then the buggers stopped making it. The closest stuff is Ambersil Amberclean or Kontakt Chemie 77 foam cleaner. Don't pay more than £8 or so for a 400ml can. Use paper towels for the first wipe-over, so you aren't just redistributing the dirt.
A selection of good detailing brushes and a non caustic general purpose interior cleaner will help with textured plastics. A soft drill brush with a fabric cleaner and an extractor will help with soft fabrics and carpets. Headliner and door card fabrics, I wouldn't use anything wetter than a damp cloth given the tendency for these items to go saggy in older cars. There are a few detailing youtube channels out there to get ideas from.
I used Ambersil Groom years ago on a Cavalier SRi that had been heavily smoked in 🤢 ! This stuff cleaned it all, you could see the yellow running down the plastics ! I still use it today 👍🏻, brilliant stuff, leaves a nice smell also 👍🏻
You can spend tons of money on big brand car cleaning products, but…….diluted Johnsons baby shampoo (you can adjust the strength as required), old tooth brushes are good for stubborn areas and follow up with fluffy micro-fibre cloths…works for me.
Did the whole Stepwgn with a vax/bisselSpotwasher ,was the pet version as it comes with 2 sets of cleaning heads, cleaned really well and the cleaning solution had a nice neutral ,not overly perfumed fragranced smell.Interior plastics I did with an old electric toothbrush and bicarb of soda wiped off with a microfibre as I went, again cleaned well and no crazy perfumes .
Meguairs APC is the product to clean all the muck off. Small toothbrush and a microfibre cloth and a sprayer with the APC dilluted to the right level 1:10 I’d presume.
Just done mine absolutely filthy inside as just bought a couple of weeks ago i think it was owned by a coal miner? I started at the dash, then removed centre console fitted a shackle for the handbrake compensater then onto door cards, seats out, done them in doors warm water fairy liquid drill and scrubbing attachment , carpet stiff scrubbing brush, clean seat belts took 3 days solid, steering wheel lightly sanded, prep cleaner and dyed 2 coats then a leather sealer. My interior is sandstone so it shows every dirty surface.
Easier to take the seats out of the car to clean it Jon...but dont forget to de activate the air bags....hve u noticed how the cloth on the door cards is beginning to come away.....Bob....
You’ll find that using a detail brush with some all purpose cleaner will work really well on the dashboard, hard to reach crevices and steering wheel etc. The agitation of the brush will make the apc foam up and give a much deeper clean than a cloth. Best of luck!
If you have no APC, try some flash and hot water with a soft detailing brush, that'll get in all patterns of plastic and vinyl. Love the Rover, nice video again.
Microfibre cloths are far better at removing dirt than cheap old dishcloths. You can scrub the plastics with a nail brush and detergent, then wipe with a damp microfibre cloth. A dry shampoo may help to freshen that nasty old velour. Leather is far easier to clean and more durable. It also makes a car more sellable.

Well done Jon it's coming up great I remember with my dads rovers were always lovely when they were clean and fabrics and plastics were nice quality
Yes its not all 'scratchy cheap' plastic - which is good news :)
The Forensic Detailing channel on TH-cam is well worth a watch to learn about products and techniques 👍
Excellent will give it a go
Check the drains, where you ecu is located under the window Sheen . Known to get blocked and fill up with water
We have deep cleaned the plenham drains in a previous episode :) - they were blocked full so absolutely a good tip to check them 🙂

Thanks for the info!
Yes I find Flash kitchen spray very good, even for engine bay / bonnet underside / wheelarches and suspension etc, plus an old softish paintbrush…
Great idea, I will try it too 👍🏼
Have fun
Try some of those white magic sponges on plastics. Great at getting stubborn marks out

Looking good so far. Did Mrs JC try out the massage gun.

Didn't you get the car from Blackpool? If so the presence of sand makes sense
Preston. Close to Blackpool
and Southport - two massive sandy beaches@@JonCoupland
A DA will do a much better job of getting the dust and stuff up that that hand thing
Well ... you say that - i tried it. I didnt :/
Its a hell of a job to remove the carpets...so best not to attempt it.....
